SAINTS AND THEIR SERVICE

|| Shri Hari ||
(Sant aur unki Seva)

"Tasmistajjane bhedaabhaavaat" (Naradbhakti Sutra 41) Saints do not regard themselves as having an independent (separate) existence from God, therefore there is not even a whiff of selfishness in them. They do not have any desire that is divergent from God. They naturally blend their desire in God's desires; their satisfaction in God's satisfaction. Therefore they remain ever satisfied and content in what is ordained by God.

Saints remain dependent on only God. "Jaahi bidhi raakhe Ram, taahi bidhi rahiye" - they imbibe in their lives perfectly the above saying "However God keeps me, I will remain happy in that", and they remain gratified. And in this manner operating under God's command they remain ever joyful. We too stay as directed by God. (because not even a single leaf moves opposing to God's will). But in this we are not pleased, then we continue to be bound. If we had the power to change God's ordinance, about those things that are not pleasing to the mind and senses, then we would surely make them favorable to us. But what to do, it is not in our control, then too, we do not have the power and capability. We continue to constantly make effort to avoid the failures. But saints are not like this. They have no thought regarding that which is ordained by God, rather the present situation appears most favorable to them. Also, in their hearts where God eternally resides, there is no influence of unfavorable situations.

God Himself says -

Samoham sarvabhooteshu na me dveshyosti na priyah |

Ye bhajanti tu maam bhaktyaa mayi te teshu chaapyaham ||

(Gita 9/29)

"Arjuna! "I am the same to all beings; as such, there is none hateful, nor dear, to Me. But, those who worship Me with devotion, are in Me and I am also in them. (Gita 9/29)

If you think carefully than this point can be properly understood. Just as there is a nice house, and no one has taken hold on it or is interfering, then a good person will be naturally pleased. In the same way, God resides in His manifest form, in the Saint's pure inner senses, that is free of egoism and sense of mine-ness, and remains ever pleased there, as God has no form of restriction or impediment over there. God resides without any hesitation in such homes. In Shri Ramcharitmanas, Goswami Tulasidasji has said -

Jaahi na chaahiye kabahun kuch tumh san sahaj sanehu
।

Basahu nirantar taasu man so raaur nij gehu ॥

In this manner, as God resides in the hearts of saints, therefore whatever work they do, that is done by God only, whatever they think, that God only thinks; and so on and so forth their utterances are absolutely the Truth.

With regards to saints and God, there are three different sayings -

(1) There is no difference between the two (Saint and God).

Sant - bhagawant antar nirantar nahin ।

kimapi mati malin kaha daas tulasi ॥

(Vinayapatrika)

Saint is only God and God is only a saint; in other words, the saints have no separate and disparate existence apart from God. Only God remains in their place. Some have also said -

Dhoondhaa sab jahaan mein paaya pataa teraa nahin ।

jab pataa teraa lagaa to ab pataa meraa nahin ॥

(to be continue)

for the Welfare of Others

                                                                            (Seva - Parahit)

continued.......

  • Things
received from the world are only for serving the world,  they are of no other
    use.

  • If we like
some thing, then it is not for seeking pleasure from it,  rather it is for
    serving the world.

  • Man must do
that work by which he too is benefited and the world too is benefited; the
benefits are at present as well as, it's outcome is also
    beneficial.

  • If you
serve the world, then you will develop a relationship with the world and if you
do work in the world for God then you will develop a relationship  with God.

  • He who has
the constant feeling in his heart of seeing to everyone's welfare,   he finds a
place in the heart of God.

  • Spirituality
has not gone sour, rather the relationship has; Therefore improve your
relationship. When selfishness and pride are renounced and one serves the other
    then relationship improves.

  • He who has
the sentiments of seeing to everyone's welfare, wherever he stays, there itself
    he will realize God.

  • To become
inclined towards God, one has to become disinclined towards the world and to
become disinclined towards the world, one has to do work for others with the
    sentiments of selflessness.

  • It is a
mistake to desire things for serving others.  You have the right to serve with
only those things that you have received.

  • Whatever
you do to others in the world, the result will be the same for you.  Therefore
always do only good to others.

  • He who
renounces selfishness and pride and is engaged only in doing things for the
welfare of others,  he alone is in fact living.

  • He who
wants to be served by others,  for him the present times are very bad,  but he
who wants to serve others,  for him the present times are very
    great.

  • Let no one
experience any suffering by any of our actions -  such sentiments are genuine
    "service".

  • By serving
others selflessly, the relationship is also good and the attachment also breaks
    away.

  • By serving
those in your household, one does not develop attachment.  Attachment comes when
there is desire to take something or the other.

  • The extent
to which man can benefit the world on attaining God, that much he cannot benefit
by any amount of charity and virtuous deeds.

  • By serving
those who have animosity towards us, there is much gains;  because there is no
    enjoyment of pleasure from serving.

  • You must
feel pleased that your fortune has unfolded, any time an opportunity arises to
    serve !

  • By seeing
our well-being as separate from all other beings,  the ego persists, which in
the future becomes a roadblock.  Therefore an aspirant must do every action only
for the benefit of the world.

Service (Doing for the Welfare of Others)

|| Shri Hari ||

 (Seva - Parahit)

Without serving the world, the attachment towards work will not dissipate.

Just like when you do any work for a company, the owner of that company is happy with you, similarly, by doing the work of the world, the master of the world (God) is happy with you.

Just like mother's milk is not for herself, but is only for the child,

similarly, all the things available to mankind, are not for our self, they are only for others.

Just as a sensuous person has a lure for sense enjoyments, an obsessed person has a weakness for his family, and a greedy man has love for his money, in the same way a good person is immersed in seeing to the welfare of all beings.

People are to be rendered service to and things that to be properly and beneficently utilized.

By directing actions to the service of others, actions flow to the world, and the aspirant becomes free from actions.

One who wants to feel oneness at all times with the all pervasive God, it is essential for him to be devoted to the welfare of all living beings.

Pilgrimage, fasting, charity, penance, reflection, meditation and samadhi (all good acts) performed by the gross, subtle and causal body in good faith, selflessly done for others, become "svadharma" and if done with personal motive, they become "paradharma".

The best use of a thing, is using it for the benefit of others.

A good man is he who is engaged in seeing to the welfare of others.

Our life is not for ourselves, rather it is for the benefit of others.

The essence of serving is being saddened by the suffering of others.

On doing good the society is served. By not doing bad, the entire universe is served. By being free of desire, we are served. By loving (having sense of my very own) God, God is served.

He who turns towards God with a true heart, through him naturally and innately welfare of others takes place.

Service (Doing for the Welfare of Others)

|| Shri Hari ||

(Seva - Parahit)

It is a rule that by serving others, we will be served and by harming others, we will harm ourselves.

Relationship with the world are subject to and conditioned by obligations. There are ways to free oneself from these obligations, and that is by serving all and desiring nothing from them.

If a spiritual aspirant desires realization of either God with attributes or without attributes, it is vital and essential that he must be devoted to the service and welfare of all beings.

A spiritual aspirant lives in this world only for the service of others, not for his own pleasures and happiness.

Those spiritual aspirants that are wholeheartedly, with true faith and a pure heart engaged in the service of others, are really serving all beings, since God is the source of all.

A spiritual aspirant must bear even the worst of pain and sorrow that comes to him, but he must not tolerate even the smallest pain that falls on others.

By wishing to bring happiness to others, one loses his own desire for happiness for himself.

Let no one suffer any pain whatsoever, having this feeling within, is a great worship.

Just like a man goes to his office and only looks after his office work, similarly coming to this world, only work for the world, not for ourselves. Then very easily we can become detached from the world and realize the ever attained eternal God.

To consider using the following four - time, understanding, things and effort for our self, is misuse of these. To employ these for the benefit of others, is worthy and beneficial use.

That feeling of happiness that we experience on encountering objects of enjoyment, if that same joy is experienced on giving happiness to others, then
there is no doubt of our own well-being (welfare, upliftment and betterment).

That happiness and amenities that we have received, they have all been received for serving others.

Human body has not been received for enjoyment of pleasures, rather for serving others, for giving them happiness.

God has given us all such great rights, that we are capable of serving all. By serving all, we are also capable of truly serving God.
