How to be Free of Attraction to the Fleeting and Perishing

Stay firm and unshakable on the point, that these will not stay with us all the time, then what is the difficulty in getting rid of the sense of mine-ness (mamta) with them ?  

Questioner - How to stay firm and unshaken on this point?
Swamiji -  Do not worry about that, reflect on it and stay firm on the point that this alone is true.   We do not stay with it all the time.  At first we were not with it,  later on it will not remain and at present state too it is not staying, these are the three points.  There is no doubt about this.  Therefore honor this point, and realize its significance.  Just as, if you even get ten rupees these days, then you honor it, if you get hundred rupees, then you honor it,  but you cannot get this point even after giving lacs and crores of rupees.   Can you get this point, with the power of money?   Yes, if some wise scholar tells you,  teaches you,  but to understand properly, you cannot get it with the power of money.  However much money you get, then too there cannot be satisfaction with money, there cannot be peace and on understanding this properly, one gets peace.   If one gets nothing, then why would so many people, come so quickly to this forest?   From this it is proven that you are gaining something or the other.  This is a very unusual, an exceptional type of talk.   Very few honor  these talks,  they do not give it much importance, this is where the mistake is.

If the attraction for the world does not go away, then do not be concerned, but you have the knowledge that you do not have an eternal relationship with it.   There is no doubt in this knowledge.  Grasp this point now.   Whether attraction leaves or does not leave, do not worry about it, but I have no relationship with them.  At first there was no relationship, and later on it will not remain.   This is our own experience.   The relationships that we have today in this life, with our family, house, money, things, did these relationship exist previously ?  And will they remain in the future?  Previously there was no relationship with us, later on we will have no relationship with them, and those relationships which are there at present,  they too are coming to an end.   These points appear to appeal to me, therefore I repeat them time and again.  

At least be attentive to the point that at birth the number years that we had remaining to live,  are not there now, isn't it?   The years remaining are reducing!  Living is going towards dying, union with the world is ending.    At first the body was not there,  later on it will not remain.   Even at present though this body is there, there is constant separation taking place.   You understand this don't you?  

Let the attraction and attachment not leave, but understand this point,  that every moment there is separation taking place.   The more firm you are on this "vivek" power of discretion,  that much it will aid you in leaving it.  That which does not live with you forever,  why to be attached to that thing?  These things cannot stay with you, in this there is no doubt, is there?   Therefore do not worry that this is not going away.  But give weight to the point that in fact we are not with them and they are not with me.   By simply accepting this, the  relationship with the inert is severed.   The relationship that appears to be solid at present and today you say that this is not going away, that inertness is cut off today.  Stay firm and unshakable on this point, that this will not stay with us all the time, then what is the difficulty in getting rid of the sense of mine-ness (mamta) with it?

From superficial to genuine love and devotion for God


In the morning it was conveyed that we have a deep and lasting relationship with God.  God says in Gita -
 
ममैवांशो जीवलोके जीवभूतः सनातनः।   ।।15.7।।
 
‘Mamaivaansho jeevaloke jeeva bhootah sanatanah’  
 
From time immemorial,  Jeev (embodied soul) is an ‘ansh’  (fragment, part) of Me only.  He did not say that ‘jeev’ is a Sadhu,  a man,  a woman, a Brahmin,  one with good or bad conduct, one who is virtuous or sinful.  All beings whether moving or stationary, whether on land, water, or in air, are an ‘ansh’ (fragment) of Me only.  Therefore we have a very special relationship with God.  God is ours and we are God’s.   
 
It is not that we become God’s,  we already are His.  And  only God is for us.   That which we receive and which later parts from us,  how can it be for us  ?    Things are acquired and later they part from us,  whereas God is ever with us.    He cannot part from us.    He cannot separate from us.  
 
We turn away from God,  but God is never unconnected from us.   How can he be unconnected.  He is everywhere.   You say that He is eternal,  He is Omnipresent,  He is in everyone,  and He belongs to everyone.  Every brother or sister,  can accept God as their very own.   Just as a mother may have several children,  but each child can acknowledge the mother as his mother.   Because each one belongs to the mother.   In the same way,  we are God’s.  The mother has given birth to the children,  so from the physical and gross perspective,  the children  are of the mother.   The mother has given the body.  So she is the mother of the body.  But our (self’s) mother is God.  We are an ‘ansh’  (fragment, part) of God.  Though being a fragment of God,  we have forgotten.  The reason is due to having assumed an affinity (sense of mine-ness) with the world.  This sense of mineness with the body, sense of mine-ness with the family,   sense of mineness with the children,   sense of mine-ness with honor, respect, and praise,    sense of mine-ness with property and possessions.   All this affinity (sense of mineness) is created.  This sense of mineness will not last.   It will not stay.  This is absolutely true.  
 
How long can something that is fabricated last ?   Tell me ?   That which is superficial,  how can it be lasting ?  Only that which is real, which is genuine will stay.  The real thing is that ‘We are God’s’

Our Relationship is ONLY with GOD


God has revealed to us in the Gita "Mameva Ansh" He has also said "Ishvar Ansh" in Ramayana. The truth is that our relationship is only with God. There is no relationship with anyone else. Therefore accept "I am God's and God is mine." If you accept this with a firm determination, progress will be very quick. In whatever life form (yoni) you travel, God is there with you. Who else is there with you all the time? There is no other relationship like the relationship with God. Only God is my very own and I am only God's. All others will come and go, will disperse away. This is what ultimately hits home. No one else is mine; Only God is my very own. This realization is so amazing, so great, so filled with nectar. It is the essence of all. I am God's and God is mine. Just like a little child says, mother is mine. He even says this to his older brother, Maa is mine. Similarly God is mine and I am God's. And no one else is mine. Meerabai says "Mere toh Giridhar Gopal, Dusero na koyi." This is such a great point, and you will not hear it in many places.

The truth is that there is nothing that is ours. No thing, no person, no caste, no organization, no position, absolutely nothing. Only God remains with us forever, in whatever life form we take. None of these life forms (bodies) will stay with us. What an amazing thing has been shared with us by God.

Whether you accept or not, is your wish. You are independent in what you want to accept. This is such sweet truth, that God never leaves us. Even if we criticize, complain, hate Him, or are ungrateful towards Him, He does not leave us. In fact He does not abandon anyone. Whatever you want to believe, you can believe, because you are independent in your beliefs, but the Devotees of God, only believes in God. There is nothing more exceptional than - God is mine and I am God's. At all times if you remain firm on this point, you will be filled with everlasting joy.

"Us abhimaan jaaye nahi bhore, mein sewak Raghupati, pati more,"
says Tulsidasji in Ramayana.

This is truly a liberating thought, one that will benefit us immensely. Therefore remain ever joyful. There is no one that is like God, no one has ever been, can ever be, it is not possible to be. Realizing this, remain in joy at all times.

The third point is "Self" was there yesterday,  and the same "self" is there today, and at night too "self" was there, then "Self" remains eternally and constantly.   Others things do not remain constantly.  They arise and perish in front of me.  By giving them importance, I take their support,  this is a mistake I am making.  I know that these are the kind to rise and perish,  how can they be my support?  How can it be my refuge?  When they are separate from me, what support can they give me,?  They are all known to me. It is known that in deep sleep there was no knowledge.  The knowledge that is there in waking and sleep state, is also known to me.  I am the knower of all of these things.  I the knower, am separate from all the things that are known.   In this there is no doubt,  is there?   Therefore I am separate from all these.   Become steady on this point.  At day time, night time,  morning-evening whenever you have time, then say that in fact I am not with them and they are not with me.  I cannot stay with them even in deep sleep, then how can I stay with them after death? Then how can they stay with me forever ?  Therefore, theirs and my relationship it not the kind that will stay forever.  One must have first hand knowledge of this, isn't it?
