Only God is Mine

Only God is Mine
( Mere toh Giridhar Gopal )

Shree Hari
continued.........
Only That One God is mine - There is no greater sacrifice then this, no greater austerity, no greatercharity, no greater holy place, no greater knowledge, no greater talk. Therefore, believing God to be our own, remainever joyful. Let there be no desire to go, nor tostay. Only God is of concern. Besides God, no one else is mine at all. Inthe infinite universes, not even a tinyspeck is mine, not even a small thing like a spark is mine. There is nothing that is mine, nothing wasmine, nothing will be mine, and nothing can ever be mine. Therefore, accept that one God as your very own, then you will be greatlybenefited. Besides God, you have nothingto do with anyone even in your dreams. There is no need to be a slave to anyone. What have we to take from anyone, what have we to give to anyone. Those who are related to us, for how long will they be with us! "sapnaa-sa ho jaavasi, sut kutumb dhan dhaam" ! A dream is remembered, but those people will not even be remembered. Just has when you dislike adream, then you will forget it. In this world, this man is good, and thisone is no good; this should happen, andthis should not happen, these are simplyattachments. Attachment is at the rootof all diseases. "Mohasakal byaadhinh kar moolaa" (Manas, Uttarkaand 121/15). Whether it becomesalright or not, what has it got to do with us? Others may seek us out, but whatneed do we have of anyone? What have wegot to do with the men of this world? Simply remember one thing - " Mere toGiridhar Gopal, Doosero na koyi" "Only God is mine, there is none other."

If you feel thirsty, then drinkwater, if you feel hungry then eat bread (roti). If you feel cold, then coveryourself with cloth. However, if you don't get apiece of cloth, then so be it! If thebody goes away, then well and good, wehave nothing to do with any of this. Wehave nothing to do with the body remaining or the body going away. We are only concerned about God - thinking so, become joyful, rejoice ! Dance ! as now you know, become estatic! Now we need not be a slave toanyone.

Up-down, outside-inside, everywhere, there is that One God only -
Bahiranterschbhootaanaam charam charameva cha  (Gita13/15)

Yacchkischijjagatyasmindruschyate shruuyatepi va |
Antrbahishrchtatsarvam vyaapya naaraayanah sthitah || (Mahaanaraayanopanishad11/6)

That God is closer than close, farther than far, more outside than ever, more inside than in. Thereis only that One Paramatma (God), and He is mine - so thinking, become joyful. If someone comes then it is God, if someone goes then it is God. If someone loves, then it is God, if someonehates, then it is God. Whatever anyonedoes, it is God and God alone. Callout to that God, "He Naath ! He Mere Naath ! O' Lord! O my Lord! Let me not forgetYou.: Your life will be fulfilled! This is such a great point! Such elevated talks ! It is so true ! It is so pure ! Do not see to what others are doing. What have we got to do with all that?

Only God is Mine

Only God is Mine
( Mere toh Giridhar Gopal )

Shree Hari
continued.........
Do not look towards your actions, do not look towards your sins, only look towards God. Just as Viduraani gives God a banana peel, then the Lord eats that peel. The joy that the Lord gets from eating a banana peel, he does not get even from eating the banana kernel "giri". This is because the feelings that Viduraani has in her mind is that God is mine. Just as seeing a hungry child the feelings with which a mother feeds her child, Viduraani's feelings were even greater than that. Similarly, you too accept God as your very own. Do not worry in the least bit about living or dying. Do not be afraid of anyone. You do not have to be reliant on anyone. Simply one thought "Only God is mine, there is none other." If you settle on this thought, then you will be blessed. But to earn lots of money, to enjoy pleasures, to attain name and fame then all this will be of no use -

Sapnaasaa ho jaavasee, sut kuttumb dhan dhaam,
Ho sachet baldev needs, japa ishvar ka name

Manushya tan phir phir nahin hoyi,
Kiya shubh karma nahi koyi,

Umra sab gafaalatmein khoyi |

From today onwards, become God's and remain so. What others do, God only knows. We have nothing to do with all that. If entire world becomes upset, then do not be concerned, but do not leave the point that - God is mine. Meerabai caught hold of the point that henceforth I cannot stay apart from my God. - "Mil bichudan mat keejai." Thereafter even her body was not found after her death. She merged with God and became one with Him ! Besides the one God, I have nothing to do with anyone.

Antahun tohin tajainge paamar, tu na taaje abahee te | (Vinayapatrikaa 118)

In the end all will leave you, no one will remain yours, therefore leave them from the very beginning.

Saadhu vichaarkar bhali samajhyaa, divee jagat ko pooth |

Peeche dekhi bigadatee, pahale baithaa rooth ||

Later on all will get spoilt, then spoiling your own work, what is there to be gained? Right now become God's. You and yours and I and mine.

There is no one that is ours and we are no ones, only God is mine and I am God's. Taking the support of the Lord's lotus feet, become blissful. Who is pleased, who is displeased, who is mine, who is not mine, do not be concerned about all these things. Whether they criticize or praise; condemn or honor, it is their wish. We have nothing to do with praises or criticism, honor or dishonor. If all become pleased, then so what? And if all become displeased, then so what? What has it got to do with us? (to be continued)

Only God is Mine

Only God is Mine
( Mere toh Giridhar Gopal )

Shree Hari
Human body has been received by God's grace, and only for realizing Him. Therefore leaving all work aside, become engaged in God. He whose age is advanced, they must most certainly become connected with God. He whose age is younger, they too must with a true heart become absorbed in God. Do all the work in the world, but our real aim, goal, objective must remain only God realization.

As such the existence is of one Paramatma (God) only. If you pay attention to the world, then all is going to go away, and it is constantly perishing. Look at yourself, when you were born from your mother's womb, at that time what was the state of your body? And now how is it? The world is constantly changing, and God is always the same. The world will most certainly not stay put and God will never change. That God is ours, and we are God's - in this we must remain firm. Just as a small child says that mother is mine. If someone asks him that why is this mother yours? Then he does not have an answer to this. In his mind there is no question as to why this mother is mine? This Maa (mother) is mine, that is it! In this there is no doubt at all. In the same way, you too should have no doubt and with a firm conviction accept that God is mine. Besides God, no one else is mine; because they all are going to go away. That which you are most careful about, that money, property, house etc, will all go away. You will not even remember it. If there is some way to remember this then please share as to where were you before this birth? Who were your mother-father, wife-son ? Which was your house? Just as you do not remember your previous birth, similarly you will not remember about this birth. That which you will not even remember, for that why are you so troubled for no reason? This is all within your experience, that no one is yours. All have come together and will later part ways. Therefore accepting that, "Only Giridhar Gopal (God) is mine, no one else is," become joyful. Worldly work is getting messed up, so let it be so. It is the kind to get ruined. Even if it improves, it will get destroyed, but later on it will be very good. Even if the whole world goes away, then too there is no concern. Besides these two - I and God, there is no one else. I am only God's and only God is mine - besides this, do not look towards any other talk, do not think at all.

Only that One Paramatma (God) is pervading everywhere. Besides Him there is no one else, no one has ever been and no one can ever be. That Paramatma (God) is mine - believing so, become joyful, become pleased. Whether we are good or bad, do not worry about that. Just as when Bharatji is going to Chitrakoot, when he looks towards his mother Kaikayi, then his feet slip backwards, and when he looks towards himself, then he stands up straight, and when he looks towards Lord Raghunathji (God, Lord Ram), then he prances forward -
Jab samujhat Raghunaath subhaau |
Tab path parat utaayil paau || (Manas, Ayodhyaa. 234/3)

Real Greatness

Real Greatness
( Vaastavik Baddappan )

Shree Hari
continued ...
It is verily a bondage to hold one's self high or great merely on the strength of owning things that are ephemeral or transitory nature. Bondage is not some animal ! Redemption from this very thralldom is liberation. You are free the moment this bond is cast off. Tell me - aren't you self-reliant, free and liberated when you do not depend for your being on fleeting opinions of others ? Tell me?

Listener - You are right, Maharajji (Holy Sire) !

Swamiji - If it is all right, then why should we remain dependent? Please, be merciful and from this very moment thoughtfully accept that you will not regard yourself big or high simply because of the official position you hold; not even by virtue of wealth are you going to feel yourself great. Neither we are great because many people praise and honor us nor we shall fall low because people denounce or decry us. Can you in essence accept and believe this truth or not? Tell me.

Listener - Yes, we can do so.

Swamiji - They, why delay at all? For whom are you waiting? For what sort of circumstance are you in anticipation of, for whose particular power or might are you waiting? Which time, whose support or succor, whose instructions you are awaiting now? For whom are you awaiting? Tell me. I pray unto you that from just now you resolve that you would never regard yourself big or small, high or low on the count of petty things of transitory nature. The Lord has said -

"aagamaapaayino'nityaastaamstitikshasva bhaarata" (Gita 2/14)

i.e. things and beings which are perishable and impermanent - bear or brook them. To tolerate them is to be free from the totality of impact, their coming and going out of existence might otherwise cause. In such a state of freedom, there is bound to be a boundless peace of mind and blissful blessedness of heart. Do it and see it for yourself. True it is ! I cast no deception! You will feel extremely unburdened and enjoy supreme bliss as if you have escaped from sinking into death-dealing morass.

Narayana ! Narayana !! Narayana !!!

Real Greatness

Real Greatness
( Vaastavik Baddappan )

Shree Hari
Though being the fountain of eternal happiness, when does he become unhappy? Only when he accepts the slavish subjugation of the perishable and transitory objects, he grows sad, morose and sorrowful. Or else he cannot become unhappy. You don't want sorrow at all, but you systematically pile up the materials of unhappiness and willfully slip into the slavery of perishable goods. There is no happiness in slavishness, not even in dreams !

Listener - More people flock to him who is virtuous!

Swamiji - If many go to one because he is a man of virtues, then too you must be clear that virtues are not his real nature. These have also been acquired. If he is emptied of good qualities or virtues, then people will not go to him at all. Please think - how can man be great because people happen to go to him. Is not then his greatness dependent on external factors? Does a person become high or low, great or small because many people go to him? This is dependency on others, how can this be greatness?

This is nothing but dependence on others - "paraadheenataa" - if we view ourselves as great because of virtues we possess, or because of our better learning and education, or because more people give us more and more honor and hold us in high esteem! Of what avail shall it ever be whether we have or don't have virtues or whether or not more people pay regards to us? We remain what we are ! For how can one be really great or otherwise only because more people regard him so? Do people become low or small because people treat them so? Can greatness ever be given or taken away by people? How can anyone be happy who regards his greatness or dignity dependent on others' opinion? Opinions are never stable. A slavery to opinions is no test of greatness. You collect money, pile up bank balances, create a rich store of precious stones, pearls, rubies etc., and begin to think that you are a big man enjoying a high social status! If that be the case, you are certainly mistaken. Make the best use of your riches and put your prosperity in the service and welfare of people. It will be mere humiliation if you are great only due to the virtues you have or the wealth you own!

God is not subject to coming and going. He is ever present. If you sincerely become God's, you will be "really" great. If you really grow great, you will never be touched by the pride of greatness, or by the fear of smallness. You lose nothing if others hold you low in esteem. Nor do you gain anything by the praise of others. If you identify yourself with the eternal Lord, the great all pervading spirit of the universe, and acknowledge your relationship with God in right perspective, than you will be truly great, great in the real sense. Then you will not be swayed by the so-called greatness showered on you or withdrawn from you by other's opinion.

Real Greatness

Real Greatness
( Vaastavik Baddappan )

Shree Hari
You experience in yourself the feeling of greatness or lowliness in view of things that are subject to creation and destruction - This is a big blunder. For example, certain people regard themselves as great in view of the wealth they own; few consider themselves great because they have big houses. Others feel great by wearing fine clothes, while still others proclaim their greatness owing to the high position, office of decorum or dignity they occupy; there are however, few ones who regard themselves quite low or small in view of the non-availability of these things. This is a very big mistake. You are yourself an inalienable, sparkling part of God and are consciousness! And you hold yourself big or small in relation to inert gross material things only - this is nothing but lowliness of your attitude ! You are the earner and enjoyer of these things, knower of their beginning and their end, as well. Why yet should you be a slave of such things? Riches come and go, friendly listeners meet and part away in life. Once we know this simple truth, what a mistake do we commit by feeling big or small only on their count! Think a little, please and immediately it would strike your intelligence that if you are great merely because you occupy a high or significant rank, then you are really small as you are; dignity is only of the office. If we are great by acquiring wealth, then the greatness lies not in us, but only in the wealth. We are not great ! Sooner we realize this, better it is that we should never feel high or low on the strength of things which are mere transitory or of fleeting nature.

You are yourself immensely great. Ordinarily, you are part and parcel of the Supreme Divine Being i.e. God, but in case you ascend to sublime devotional heights, you are the crest-jewel of Divinity, God himself says :

"I am the Servant of my devotees.

Devotees my Crest-jewel be! "

Maim to hu bhagatanakaa daasa, bhagata mere mukutamani

You are really that whom God calls his crest jewel! When does one become a devotee? The moment redemption from the grossness of materiality (jadataa) is attained, that very moment you are a devotee! Therefore, you should from this very moment hold in your mind the firm resolve that you would not view yourself in high or low self esteem on the basis of petty things that have origin and endings. You do earn and own these perishables, use and enjoy them but not weigh your being great or otherwise on their count. The balloon of your ego is pumped full-blown on their airy strength and there lies the rub ! Please tell me where is the difficulty in apprehending this simple truth! If there is none, then accept the wisdom of this reality just now. It brooks no delay. It demands no preparation, expects no special intelligence, no extra power or stamina, nor any uncommon ability on your part. Accept for God's sake that you will not consider yourself great because of the belonging of mutable and ephemeral nature. For, such an orientation is nothing but mere subjection or slavery. A slave can never be happy even in dreams. "Paraadheena sapanehu sukhu naahim" (Manasa, Bala. 102/3). We are God's and God is ours - if you firmly believe this, then alone you will be truly great in the real sense

"Being in body finite (jeev) is fraction divine of God Eternal! Conscious, flawless, and ocean of happiness and bliss natural !!"

Salvation is Natural and Easy

Salvation is Natural and Easy
(Kalyaan Sahaj Hai)

Shree Hari
There is no shortage at all of time, understanding andmaterial goods. If there is any shortage,it is only of one thing that we do not want our spiritual upliftment i.e. "kalyaan". Only when we ourselves think of it, and wantit, then our "kalyaan" would take place. Salvation would not happen because other persons tell of it. Even if it takes place because others speakabout it, then too at its roots must lie your willingness to accept their wordand to work out your salvation with determined effort. Other's advice must become your ownconviction before it leads you to your welfare.

You are to do only as much as the total responsibility thatis on you; then your welfare issecure. The more intelligent you become, the greater becomes your responsibility. The lesser your intelligence is, the lesser is your responsibility. Tax is imposed on income only. Imposition of tax is on possessions. How can there be any tax, if there is nopossession or ownership thereof?

More knowledge you acquire, more things you accumulate, the moreyour responsibility will increase. If more things were needed for your salvation,God would have certainly given you more. If more time were needed, He wouldhave given you more time. What to talkof "would have given", He has alreadygiven. God has given more things, more intelligence, more time, more ability, more strength. God's treasure is endless, infinite, immeasurable. Whatsoever strengthor power the Mother has to rear the child, is all in all for the baby! So is the power of our Lord, it is all in all for us. Omnipotent, Omniscient, Supremely Merciful, Supremely Generous, Best Friendand Sovereign Lord has bestowed this human frame for the thorough welfare ofthe "Jeev" - where is any kind ofdeficiency or shortage in it? Only byaccepting this simple truth, your pathwould be at once clear. But do not try tobe clever and cunning, be honestly straight-forward -

Saral subhaava na manakutilaayi,
Jathaa laabha samtosasadaai (Manas, Uttara, 46/1)

Lack of crookedness, a mind free from perversity and absolute contentment with whatever maybe acquired - this is all that isneeded.

The more simple and straight-forward you are, that much straightand clear of all hazards is your path. Cleverer you are, tougher is your way, full of more and more difficulties.

You have to do only as much as you can. You have to know only as much as youcan. You have to cognize or accept only asmuch as you can, There is no need to domore, there is no need to knowmore, and there is no need to acceptmore. Make the best possible use ofwhatever you have !

Salvation is Natural and Easy

Salvation is Natural and Easy
(Kalyaan Sahaj Hai)

Shree Hari
If we want to attain spiritual welfare, then whatever we know is enough. More knowledge than that is not necessary. We do not need to have anything more than what we have received. If you want to create crisis, if you want to sink in sense enjoyment, if you want to get trapped in the cycle of birth and death, then you do need more goods and belongings. If you long for your salvation, then whatever you have received, that alone is adequate, you have already been given whatever is essential. Whatever knowledge you have is complete, it is not insufficient. Therefore, there is neither any need to know more, nor to acquire more. Salvation - "kalyaan" is undoubtedly possible with whatever we know or have.

This body, this world was not here before, nor will it remain afterwards. As such, our relationship with it was not there before, and it shall not be there in the future – everyone knows this. Then, trust not, the body and the world, do not seek shelter or support there. Likewise, we have to make the best use of things that we possess, and bestow salvation on all. There is no flaws in God's providence or constitution. God is the "Suhrd", the good friend, of all beings, living creatures "jeevas", without exception. He gave human organism for the welfare of the "jeevas"; so He did not leave any defect or deficiency for man's salvation; He did not leave any shortage of jnana (knowledge), or shortage of material goods, or even abilities in man. Had he kept any sort of paucity, it would have been quite unbecoming and improper to say, "human body is given for divine destiny or welfare".

Looked at from the viewpoint of actions - "karmas" - whatever is of utmost necessity is already made available to us and with those goods alone our welfare can be achieved. Who will expect more from us? The limit within which or up to which we can do or yield, if we do that, our welfare is guaranteed - there is no doubt about it. Looked at from the viewpoint of knowledge, our relation with anything is non-existent. This is our commonly studied or known observation. When no relationship exists between us and things, where remains the question whether the materials we possess are more or less in quantity! At present we have no relationship, we never had any kind of relationship, nor shall there be any kind of relationship with the things that are produced and which perish. If and when such awareness or experience dawns, then the welfare will bloom, realization will take place.

Thus seen from the viewpoint of the Yoga of Devotion - Bhaktiyoga - the Law of the Supremely Beloved well-wisher God (Param Suhrd) is perfect and without any flaw; from the viewpoint of the Yoga of Action - "Karmayog" -whatever is made available is enough and complete; and from the viewpoint of Yoga of Knowledge - Jnanayog - we have no relationship at all with any act or material. So there is no need to know anything new, to acquire or collect anything new. We have completely all the materials and the time in our possession for our salvation. As for the time, I say that there is so much of time in human birth that even with a small portion of it, salvation is a happy possibility! God Realization is a small task, whereas time at our disposal is far more. Though one need not have salvation twice, but if need there be, then one can repeat it five, seven or even ten times – so much time a man has at his disposal. Even goods are excessive. The total material available will not be put to its full use, man will have to die leaving behind much of his things. Nothing of transitory or ephemeral nature ever belonged to you, nor does is belong at present, nor will it ever be yours! This understanding is also with you.

Gain from Unfavorable Circumstances

Gain from Unfavorable Circumstances
(Pratikul Paristhiti se Laabh)

Shree Hari
(continued)
Man becomes cautious during times of adversity and misfortune. He is not so careful in times of pleasure. Amidst pleasures he delights himself, his ego swells and he transgresses limits of righteousness "hrsto drpyati drpto dharmadatikraamati". But a suffering man does not transgress righteousness.

A sadhus cannot visit the houses of highly rich persons, as they keep armed guards on the gates of their bungalows to block any person. No beggars have any access there. But any saint or sadhu can have an easy access to a poor man's house; and he will get his "Bhikshaa" or ordinary edibles, bread etc. The poor man thinks as to what act of charity or goodness his merit may shine, his well-being may take place, some blessing of a saint may do him good! So he will serve the saints with alms etc., Whatever may be the feelings, he will give. But a rich man will not have these things in his heart. He will refuse and tell the sadhus etc. to buzz off. Thus, not much good work can be done by a man of pleasure, because he is deeply immersed in sense-enjoyments. A suffering man does not sink in "Bhogas" or sense-pleasures; he remains indifferent. Therefore, he is good for himself, for others and for God; and so are all - God and people - good to him in his views. Thus the seeker should feel glad in difficult times; should feel blissful and blessed that God has by His kindness and grace, given him such an opportunity (of God Realization). Kunti understood this fact well; and that is why she prayed to God to bestow pain on her. She said "O' Lord! Let adversity and misfortune be my lot always" - "vipadah santu nah saasvattatra tatra jagadguro" (Srimad Bhagwat 1/8/25). Rantideva also said – "Let me suffer all the sorrows and miseries of all the unhappy ones in the world, so that they may be free from pains of the world!" - "aartim prapadye'khiladehabhaajaamantahsthito yena bhavantyaduhkhaah" (Srimad Bhagwat 9/21/12). What a strange prayerful demand! I should suffer the miseries of all - this is not an ordinary thing! This is a very high and a noble vision.

Things of pleasure and comforts are not for our enjoyment "Bhoga" . These comfort and pleasure giving things are for doing good to others, to help others. This body has not been given to us for sensual enjoyment - "Bhogas" - "ehi tana kara phala bisaya na bhaai" (Manasa, Uttara. 44/1), this has been given for further spiritual development. Man should become eternally happy, his sorrows should end forever! This human body has been provided only for fulfillment of this aim.

Listener - In good pleasurable times, every one is your companion; in bad times (during miseries and sorrows), nobody remains.

Swamiji - During time of suffering and misery, those who are enjoyer of pleasures (bhogis) will not come to your support. A gentleman showers his special grace on the suffering ones and extends his cooperation to them. Those who are friends only of pleasures are bhogis only. They desire happiness and comforts from you. They do not want your good or well-being. Those who give company during happy times are guile. They are deceivers. They themselves want to loot pleasure from you. But a gentleman wishes the good and well-being of others.

`gacchatah skhalanam kvaapi bhavatyeva pramaadatah,
Hasanti durjanaastatra samaadadhaati sajjanaah".

i.e. If someone falls while walking and gets hurt, then an evil person will laugh at him. But a gentleman will say - "Brother! Where are you hurt? Where do you want to go? May we take you there?" Thus, during times of sorrow, a gentleman will lend you his full support and we register much progress during such times.

Gain from Unfavorable Circumstances

Gain from Unfavorable Circumstances
(Pratikul Paristhiti se Laabh)

Shree Hari
(continued)
In loving the child or scolding him if need be, mother is never of two hearts; she is never devoid of grace or love. She is not just "devoid of grace" (akripa), rather there is a special grace in her scolding. When love swells in any mother's bosom, she will distribute sweetmeat laddus to all the children playing at her home; but she will not slap all the children who are troubling her. She will slap only her own child. Likewise God showers favorable circumstances on all people alike, but God confers unfavorable circumstances only on those whom He has special grace, whom He regards His own dear devotees! In unfavorable circumstances, God's special grace is obtained, sins are destroyed and progressive development is achieved. Whoever has become great in history, they have mostly progressed only in adverse circumstances. There have been very rare saints who have progressed in favorable circumstances.

Look, let me show you direct from life experiences. When any living being or creature gets suffering; then various well-intentioned people bid to see him free of suffering. But if instead there is a "Bhogi" person,, he will not get the support and cooperation of the others. He will not be liked by all. Saints may be happy with him, but everyone will not be pleased with him. The heart of pedestrians burns by seeing the "Bhogi" enjoying a car-ride. They do not co-operate with him; instead they oppose him. As people do not co-operate in Bhogi person's pleasures, so in God too, there is a little indifference for them. As when the child is happy, enjoying the game, there is a little carefreeness in the mother's heart, if not indifference. When the child cries and calls out, then the mother's special care and attention is centered on that child. In the same way, there is God's special grace on men that are suffering and in pain-yielding circumstance! As your co-operation with man in pain is both special and natural, so also God's co-operation with devotees in pain and suffering is of special kindness and grace. In unhappiness, when a seeker becomes specially cautious, then he will have progress; but if he begins to weep and bewail his lot, his development will be hampered. There was a child of five to seven years of age and his parents died. Now he is thirty years old. There is another follow who is thirty years of age, and has parents, grand-parents, brothers and sisters all alive. Who of the two will be more intelligent and clever Certainly, he who is an orphan. Reason being that progress or development during difficult and adverse circumstances is much more speedy and steady then in favorable ones! There is ever new progress during difficult times. What does it prove? That the circumstance that God has given us is only for our well-being, for our upliftment!

In enjoyment of "bhoga" (sense pleasures), intelligence deteriorates; it does not develop. It spells carelessness during pleasures. Sleep overwhelms during carefree atmosphere of more restfulness. Pain and anxiety are the enemies of sleep and carelessness. In an adverse circumstance if we take to spiritual practices, our course or practice will take wings because our sins get destroyed and special help and co-operation of saints, sadhus and God flow forth in our life.

Gain from Unfavorable Circumstances

Gain from Unfavorable Circumstances
(Pratikul Paristhiti se Laabh)

Shree Hari
Human body is considered to be the best (door way to Divinity). "Labdhvaa sudurlabhamidam bahusambhaavante" (Srimad Bhagwat 11/9/29) God, showers grace without cause, confers human body by His utter mercifulness and kind grace -

Kabahuka kari karunaa nara dehi,
Deta isa binu hetu sanehi (Manas, Uttara 44/3)

As God has by mere compassion and grace given us the human frame, so also whatever circumstance He has given us is also given by Grace. Whether our actions are good or otherwise, whatever kind of actions we have done, is of little concern! The important thing is that the dispenser of their fruits is our supremely Dear Friend - "suhrdam sarvabhuutaanaam" (Gita 5/29).

From worldly view-point, circumstance is of two kinds - pleasure-yielding and pain-yielding. But from spiritual point of view, the circumstance is not of two kinds. To them who want God Realization, there are no two kinds of circumstance. For God has given this human body only for His realization, has conferred the circumstance also for that very realization. Therefore, whatever nature of circumstance we have obtained -whether the most favorable of the favorable circumstances or the most unfavorable of the unfavorable circumstances or the circumstance of mixed nature i.e. favorable-cum-unfavorable circumstance - it is only meant for our spiritual welfare. Whatever nature of the circumstance is made available it is merely the instrument of God-Realization - "Saadhan dhaam moksh kara dvaaraa (Manasa, Uttar 43/4) He who is a "Bhogi" i.e. a seeker of sensual pleasures, to him the circumstance is of dual nature - pleasure-yielding and pain yielding. In Yogi's view, however the circumstance is never of two sorts.

For accomplishment of spiritual well-being, an unfavorable circumstance is far better than the favorable circumstance. Why is it better? It is so because in a favorable circumstance there is a possibility, because of attachment, of going down in the mire of worldliness, but it is not so in the midst of an unfavorable circumstance' instead there is the manliness of walking only towards the God-head. For a seeker of God, only two things are of supreme value - withdrawal from worldliness and complete adherence to God. In a favorable circumstance we do get attached to the world, thus there is to be an effort to withdraw from the world. But in an unfavorable circumstance, no effort is needed in the act of withdrawal from the world. Therefore, half of the seeker's world is automatically done in the unfavorable circumstance !

Laalane taadane maaturnaakaarunyam yathaarbhake
Tadvadeva mahesasya niyanturgunadosayoh

As in nourishment and admonitions, never is there lack of mother's grace!
So too in control of merits and sins, never is there lack of the Lord's grace!!

Goal of Human Life

Goal of Human Life
(Manushya Jivan ka Uddeshya)

Shree Hari
(continued)

Swamiji - Ponder a little, please, on the point. You come to Satsanga so early in the morning from very far distances and that too daily. Do you get any money here? Or any sensual enjoyments? Or any honor? Or any gains? Or any profits that you earn over here? If none of these then tell me what brings you here for satsanga so early in the pre-dawn hours?

Listener: We get peace and solace to our soul!

Swamiji: Peace perfect and full is what we need. If you get some or little amount of peace here and then you go away; and if your peace does not stay for long thereafter, then what is the use or value of such incomplete or transitory peace? We need the highest kind of peace which never comes to an end. But the mistake occurs when we get pleased with only petty peace of worldly nature!

One man was going to his village on a camel. He reached a mid-way village at the fall of night. There at one place a marriage ceremony was taking place. Drums and trumpets were being beaten and blown. That man was a Brahmin. Having reached the spot he came to know that "Bhoora" was about to be disbursed. "Bhoora" in Sanskrit is known as a special gift given to Brahmins on wedding occasions. That Brahmin fastened the camel outside the house and went inside to obtain the "Bhoora". The thieves who happened to be there, saw the camel and they rode off with it. The Brahmin received four annas for his "bhoora", but when he came outside and saw the missing camel, he realized that his loss was significant – Rs 500, the cost of the camel. The purport of the illustration is that in the petty achievements of transitory worldly things, some honor, some wealth, some pleasure, some status, some exotic foods – the camel of God Realization is forgotten and lost sight of. Such is the plight! The great Bliss is forsaken in favor of temporary glitter of worldly pettiness, and small pleasures!

Eternal joy is being lost in ephemeral pleasures! People become happy in small doses of honor. One saint was told by some people that he was highly honored and respected by them. The saint said : "What honor you can confer! Dust? All of you people can hardly pay any honor. We are honored by God! What power have you to honor us? Truly, indeed, God alone decks His devotees, the saints, with the honor of immortality! How does a worldly person know what the real honor is?

The supreme gain which you crave for is in reality, the deep longing for God Realization. You may call, if you so desire, this longing "the urge to know", "the urge to love" or "the urge to be happy for ever". "the urge to see God face to face" "the urge for God Realization". All mean one and the same thing. Only this is our goal. Be firm and fixed on this objective. Do not be pleased with the incomplete. If you do not get stuck up in the half incomplete, you will realize, the full.

This human body is the best of all the living forms. So, its ultimate goal should also be the best. There should be no higher goal than that ever thinkable. It is thus self-evident that God-Realization is the highest and the noblest goal of human life. Human life is meant only for this supreme purpose.

Listener: Where is the guarantee, Holy Sir, that by giving up worldly pleasures, the highest truth of life will be attained? If we give up one and do not gain the other higher one, then shall we not remain empty altogether?

Swamiji: Arjuna also posed a similar question that if a seeker of yoga dies midway on the path of Yoga without realizing the Supreme, what plight would be of the poor one? Does he become "ubhaya-bhrasta" or fall from both the ends (Gita 6/37-38)? The world was renounced and God was not realized before he left his mortal coil – then will he only hang in between them? The Lord answered:

"No Partha! He suffers no fall: neither in this world, nor in the next world; because O' dear he who walks even little on the path of spiritual well-being never slips into any wretchedness or plight "durgati" (Gita 6/40).

If you happen to come across any traveler on the noble way of Welfare Supreme, you will yourself realize this truth. His gaiety, his bliss, his God intoxicatedness will have a peculiar halo, a specifically distinctive ring. The seekers of truth do register spiritual progress and they certainly enjoy extraordinary and ecstatic joy of life whereby they can never give up their search or Sadhana. That which is Supreme Bliss is obtainable by all, there is no doubt about it. Why is there no doubt? Because when we undertake spiritual practices, the peculiarities of divine life reveal themselves to us. Let you go in for soulfulness of divine discipline and then, the mysteries will be unfurled unto you too. There is an immense gain or joy in the association of the holy persons (satsang). We have not seen any other "upaaya" or means of realizing the highest goal of life. Countless are the means and people do follow one or the other of them, but the gain we obtain through Satsang, we cannot acquire through any other spiritual practices and means which we may adopt even for years.

Narayana ! Narayana !! Narayana !!!

Goal of Human Life

Goal of Human Life
(Manushya Jivan ka Uddeshya)

Shree Hari
(continued)
The seekers commit a big mistake while following their spiritual path. They get contented midway with elementary success. There is a Marawari saying;

"adhe kutte kholana hi kheera hai." i.e. for a blind dog even the "Kholana" (water from strained vegetables etc) is as good as rice cooked in milk (kheer). Similarly there are people that become highly pleased even with the acquisition of a little wealth, wisdom, honor, and fame in the world.

What is truly achieved? The worldly achievements whatever it is, is indeed a deception. We need to realize the Supreme and the superior most truth! Even if we need wealth, it must be of the best and highest nature. Whatever we want, whether wisdom, riches, honor, status, praise, life, we want it to be of the noblest, purest and highest order. None can uproot this fundamental desire of man's heart! And, nothing short of God Realization can satiate this deep seated longing, because the supreme Tattva is no other than God Himself.

Arjuna says -

Na tvatsamo'styabhyadhikah kuto'nyo

lokatraye' pyarpratimaprabhaava (gita 11/43)

i.e. Thou are of illimitable power and effect; there is none like You; how can then anybody be more higher than what you are!"

Achievement of such a supreme thing should thus be the goal of our life. That Tattva which was realized in ancient times by the earlier great ones, that sages and seers, saints and Sadhus, Sanakaadika and Devarshi Narada, Brahmaa, Shankara etc., -

That very truth is realizable and can be realized even now in this Kaliyuga today itseld. The worldly goods can not be obtained by one and all, but God can be realized by everybody. There is not a single man for whom God is inaccessible!

Realization of that supreme truth, God alone, is the goal of human life. My aim is God realization - only man is capable enough to realize this thing; not any other living being!

Amongst living beings, cow is very holy animal, but we cannot make her understand this truth. Please, ponder a little on the point. (to be continued)

Goal of Human Life

Goal of Human Life
(Manushya Jivan ka Uddeshya)

Shree Hari
Question: How are we to know that our aim is exclusively and only God (Self) Realization ? Since wealth is also worthy of being acquired, honor and status are also worth attaining, comforts and conveniences are also desirable, so many things are to be achieved, the question arises as to how to be sure that "God Realization" is the goal of our life?

Swamiji: Is there anyone among you who wants such happiness that is not complete and perfect? Does anyone want happiness that is incomplete and transitory? Does anyone want a life that does not remain; that we live at times and other times we do not live? Does anyone here desire knowledge that is incomplete?

We all desire happiness that never ends, a life that is eternal and knowledge that is perfect and complete in itself, knowledge that does not have the least bit of incompleteness in it, knowledge that is supreme and perfect. In fact, this longing within is the longing for the Supreme Truth of Life, God (Paramatma). Besides God, there is nothing which is eternal, perfect and absolute.

We continue to suppress this desire to seek Truth by petty worldly desires and become happy and unhappy at times and intervals. Even a dog is pleased by happiness in small measures. A donkey too is pleased that way. That happiness should be achieved which is in no way incomplete, which is perfect in itself, that is not mixed with the least bit of sorrow or unhappiness. The world is incapable of offering happiness that has no deficiency or shortcoming. Thus worldly pleasures or happiness is not our goal. It is not our destiny. When we inquire on this deeply, we will realize that, that kind of happiness which is eternal, indivisible, without permitting any deficiency is only in one Supreme entity, the Lord-of-all (Paramatma). In whatever measure the worldly things may be achieved, wealth, money, possessions, position, posts, name, fame, glories, kingdom, honour, respect, status etc., may fall to our lot, but that cannot give us contentment or full lasting satisfaction. On the contrary, let there be "more of it", yes, still "more of it" such grows the greedy desire for them.

We want to live, it means that we are dying or else why should there have been a longing to live? It is true that there is a desire to live. Having understood and known much in the world, there still lurks a desire to know ever more. Having obtained things in plenty, the desire to have more and more persists. Having done a lot in life, there is always a keenness to entertain the idea that though much has been done, yet this much has still to be accomplished. This sort of deficiency or incompleteness which is felt is knowing, gaining, doing etc., need to be recognized by man. It must be realized that this deficiency the world can never remove.

This whole world may be achieved and yet this emptiness can never be filled, because the world is impermanent and ever changing. But think a little, what will happen once God is realized. In this regard, the Gita says -

"yam labdhvaa chaaparam laabham manyate naadhikam tatah." (Gita 6/22)

i.e. Having realized whom there is no gain higher than that." Such is his experienced belief which none can shake.

Having established himself in such a perfect state of God Realization, even the heaviest affliction born of stormy situations in life cannot in the least shake him from his solid rock like faith.

"yasminsthito na dukhena gurunaapi vichaalyate"

Even if he is sandwiched between the two conflicting mighty rocks and his body is crushed, then too even by that excruciating pain he is not dislodged or dissuaded from his unison with the Supreme Self. That pain has no access there. The pain cannot even touch that soulful state.

Happiness is so much there that there can be no higher bliss than that. No sorrow can even cast its shadow on it. Tell, who wants such a blissful blessedness? People get contented even in small shares (alpa); that is a very big mistake.

The Rarity of a True Guru

The Rarity of a True Guru
(Sacche Guru ki Durlabhtaa)

Shree Hari

Guruvo bahavha santi shishya vittaapahaarakaah |
tamekam durlabham manye shishyahruttapahaarakam || (Guru Gita)

"There are many Gurus who snatch the wealth of their disciple, but a Guru who can relieve the disciple of the burning sensation of his heart is rare to find."

The Gita talks about the persons who remain engrossed in the welfare of all beings - "Sarvabhootahite rataah" (Gita 5/25, 12/4). The true Guru always looks toward the interest of all beings and do not attract the disciples towards themselves. They neither make any disciples, nor make their sects, nor accept any offerings. They always think about the well-being and salvation of others - and that too not only for their disciples, but for all the living beings. Their prayer to God is that all beings should be happy, they should be free from diseases, there is well-being of all and no one should ever suffer in the least -

sare bhavantu sukhinah; sarve santu niraamayaah |
sarve bhadraani pachyantu, maa kaschid dukhabhaabhavet ||

The reason beings that they themselves have experienced and realized that there is so much suffering in the world and for everlasting happiness, it is essential to sacrifice the pleasures of the world. They want that everyone should be free from the worldly pains and experience the highest form of happiness till eternity.

In today's times, it is very rare to find genuine saints and sages. They were rare even in the past, but specially at present, they are even rarer to find. Today it is a profession to be a Guru. They initiate disciples to earn their own livelihood, to impose their own beliefs and systems, to encourage their praise and fame and to serve their own self-interest. The disciples have also developed the same feeling of self interest nowadays.

Guru lobhi shish laalachi, dono khele daanv |
dono doobaa "paras Ram", baith patthar kee naav ||

It is the time for everything artificial - be it a Brahmana, or a Kshatriya, a Vaishya or a Sudra, hermits, householders, celibates, sages etc. all are fake. Even vegetables, flowers, spices, milk etc., are adulterated too. So even Gurus are frauds,

Mithyaaramh dambh rat joyi    | Ta kahun sant kahayi sab koyi ||
niraachaar jo shruti path tyaagi | kalijug soyi gyaani so biraagi || (Manas, Uttar 98/2, 4)

It is not enough to be a "sadhu" to attain salvation. I have seen this by being a "sadhu" myself. Therefore for one's welfare (salvation), one should not get bonded with any particular human beings, not even to a Guru.

Attainment of God is not Dependent on Guru

Attainment of God is not Dependent on Guru
(Bhagwat Praapti Guru ke Adheen Nahin)

Shree Hari
The realization of God (Supreme Soul), Whom we want to attain, is not confined to any particular place, not possessed by any particular person and if it is so, then how would God benefit us? The Almighty is ever attained to all beings, The sages, who are knowers of the reality of Divine Soul, neither aspire to become Gurus nor they accept any gifts, instead they help the seekers openly. The ones who are not inclined to become Gurus are able to teach us the truth of the Soul better, and not the ones who accept to become Gurus.

The people who buy and sell the name of God bargain about it and who emphasize that the pre-requisite for them to help in showing the way to reach God, is to become their disciples - are not true Gurus. It is a principle that a thing that is bought for a particular price is of less value than the amount paid. If a watch is bought for Rs. 100, the shopkeeper himself has not bought it for that much but for less than that. If by accepting a Guru, a thing is achieved then it certainly cannot be equivalent to the Guru, but something lower than the Guru, and not of that value. So how can God be attained by it? God is invaluable. Such a valuable possession can only be had without paying any value, because an invaluable item cannot be bought at an price and on the other hand, if a price is paid for a thing, it is of less value than the price paid. Therefore, if someone wants you to be a disciple, with folded hands bow out, and be certain of it that he is not the Guru. He is a Kaalanemi in disguise. Kaalanemi devil personified as a Guru once told Hanumanji that he would impart him knowledge after initiating him -

Sar majjan kari aatur aavahu |
dicchaa deun gyaan jehim paavahu || (Manas, Lankaa. 57/4)

After realizing the truth, Hanumanji told him to accept his fees to be a Guru before utternace of his teaching of the secret mantra (guru mantra) and later on as a token of his fees, Hanuman caught hold of his body with his tail and knocked him down.

Pre-Eminence of a Disciple for Attaining Salvation

Pre-Eminence of a Disciple for Attaining Salvation
(Kalyaan mein Shishya ki Mukhyataa)

Shree Hari
In case when a Guru is a (Mahanta) head of a particular sect, in case where he possesses millions of dollars, then in order to gain that wealth, there is pre-eminence of a Guru. When the Guru accepts a disciple, then only the disciple will get the money. Without the consent of the Guru, a disciple cannot take the money from the Guru. Therefore, for obtaining wealth, the role of a Guru is prominent, but to gain knowledge and to attain salvation, the disciple alone is of primary importance. If a disciple does not have a deep yearning for his salvation, then a Guru can't help him attain salvation, but if a disciple has a deep hunger for his salvation, then even without being accepted as a disciple by the Guru, he will attain salvation.

Swami Ramanandaji refused to initiate Kabir as his disciple. So one day Kabir lay down on the stairs of Pancaganga. When Ramanandaji pass from there to take a bath, he unknowingly stepped on Kabir. And he uttered "Ram- Ram." Kabir accepted the name "Ram" as his Guru mantra (given by the Guru for the disciple's spiritual guidance) and started his spiritual practice. As a result, Kabir became a universal saint amongst all the other saints. In another incident, Dronaacharya refused to accept Ekalavya as his disciple. So Eklavya made a statue of him, and treating it as his Guru, started learning archery and as a result became even more perfect than Arjuna in archery. Therefore, it is not essential that by engaging in a formal Guru-disciple relationship only, you attain salvation. If that was the case, have all those persons who have made someone their Gurus, attained salvation? Have they attained God? The one by whose teachings and guidance, we attain salvation, is the true spiritual guide for us, whether we consider him a Guru or not or whether he treats us as his disciple or not, and even if the Guru is not aware of this. Dattatreyaji talked about his 24 Gurus but did any one of them say to him that I am your Guru and you are my disciple? A Guru should be such that he remains unaware that he has a disciple.

Man's Inborn Guru – Discrimination

Man's Inborn Guru – Discrimination
(Manushya ka Janmajaat Guru - Vivek)

Shree Hari
It is a vital fact that the Almighty God gives the human body to realize God and along with it, He also gifts us a Guru in the form of discrimination. God does not leave anything incomplete. The way an officer gets the facilities of a house, servant, car etc., similarly, God makes provisions for our salvation, along with the human body. He provides the "vivek" (discrimination) to discriminate between the real and the unreal, desirable and undesirable, right and wrong. The one who respects his discrimination does not need any external Guru for his salvation and the one who disrespects it - even if he has a Guru, he is not capable to attain salvation. That is why it is not necessary to have a Guru.

The more a being gives importance to his discrimination, puts it to use in his life, the more his discrimination is enhanced and finally the discrimination is transformed into self-realization. The respect towards one's discrimination is achieved by attending "satsang" (spiritual discourses) and not by making a Guru –

"Binu satsang bibek na hoyi" (Manas, Bala. 3/4 )

True saints and sages don't make any disciples, still people achieve salvation by attending to their discourses and teachings. True knowledge flows from their natural behavior and scriptures are composed of their utterances. Therefore, as far as possible, for our spiritual progress, we should concentrate on the discourses and teachings of real saints and not get attached to a Guru.

The Mewaara King's uncle was Maharaja Caturasmhaani. He used to listen to religious discourses and whenever any good utterance was heard, he put it into practice in his life. His decision was to follow it for his whole life. This way he became a true saint himself. He composed several volumes and was known as "Valmiki"of Mewaari dilect. Similarly you shall also become saintly if you start practicing all the good that you get and hear.

Our Own Yearning Lead Us to Welfare

Our Own Yearning Lead Us to Welfare
(Kalyaan ki Praapti mein Apni Lagan kaaran)

Shree Hari

continued ......

A rich man keeps a servant for doing his chores. He hires a Brahmana to perform religious rituals, but if the rich man is hungry or unwell, he himself has to do the required task of eating food and taking medicines for his good health and speedy recovery - no one else can help him in that. If this is the case, then how would you uplift yourself towards spiritual transformation, if you don't have the yearning to make true efforts yourself for your chosen ideal If you truly dedicate yourself to God, then the sages and Gurus would help you, but you have to intensify your pursuit towards spiritual enrichment yourself. Therefore, it is a deceiving belief that a mere guidance from a Guru would lead us to salvation.

A mother can be very caring and loving but if you are not hungry, how can she help you eat food? Similarly, if you do not have the longing for salvation, how can God, in spite of being compassionate and forgiving help you in your endeavor? There is a case like this in the epic Mahabharata, when Draupadi remembered Lord Krishna during distress of being disrobed by the Kauravas. Lord Krishna appeared for her help in the form of clothes. Yudhisthira on the other hand, didn't call out the Lord for help while losing in gambling, then how could God reach him as his savior? Yudhisthira faced afflictions and was tormented in the jungle for thirteen years. Kunti asked Krishna, "don't you have mercy on the Pandavas? The Lord replied, "What can I do?" Yudhisthira lost his kingdom, wealth etc., in gambling but never remembered Me even once and never aske for My help.

Our Own Yearning Lead Us to Welfare

Our Own Yearning Lead Us to Welfare
(Kalyaan ki Praapti mein Apni Lagan kaaran)

Shree Hari

Lord Krishna has specified in the Gita -

Uddharedaatmanaatmanam Naatmanamvasaadayet |
Aatmaivahyaatmano bandhraatmaiva ritpuraatmanah || (Gita 6/5)

"It is up to man to emancipate himself by his own self and not degrade himself, as man is his own friend and he is his own enemy."

It means that man himself is responsible for his elevation, as well as, his downfall and not someone else. Since God has bestowed man with a human body, then He has also fully given man all the resources for his salvation. That is why there is no need for anyone else for our salvation.

Only one's own inward surrender, dedication and obedience to guru, saints and God ensure him the way to spiritual progress and fulfillment of his aim of salvation. In absence of that yearning in the disciple, how could even Guru help him? If you yourself do not become a student, then what can a teacher do? Someone else may provide you with best of foods, but how would you enjoy it, if you are not hungry? Similarly, if one does not have the keen and sincere yearning, how would the discourses by Gurus and Sages help him?

The guidance of a Guru, Saint and God is always available. There have been a number of famous saints, teachers, Gurus, incarnation of God, but still we are not liberated. This proves that it is we who have not accepted them and we have failed to derive benefit from them. Therefore, he who feels that someone else is responsible for his uplifment, as well as, his downfall, he can never attain liberation (salvation).

Truly speaking man himself is his own Guru (master) - "Aatmano gururaatmaiva purushsya visheshatah" (Srimad Bhagwat 11/7/20).

So, we should guide and lecture ourselves. Instead of finding faults with others we should look at ourselves to find out our shortcomings and make adequate efforts to free ourselves from them. You only become your own master, your own leader and your own ruler. Meaning, salvation is neither by a Guru, nor by God, rather we can transform our life by our own yearning, perseverance and endeavor. Without one's own yearning, even God cannot do anything. If that was so, why are we still deprived of attaining salvation? The problem is that we are short of our efforts towards salvation while there is no dearth of Gurus, Saints, Sages and the Almighty. Spiritual enlightenment is not dependent on them but it totally depends on the seeker himself. When in absence of our own aspirations for our salvation, even the Supreme Lord cannot help us, then how can any human being lead us to salvation, if we don't have a keen desire? Any number of Gurus we might approach, it won't help us, on the other and if we have a true yearning in our heart, we would find a Guru, a Sage, God, good spiritual books and wisdom. How it would happen, we don't know but leave it to God, When a fruit is ripe, the parrot itself flies to eat it. Similarly if we are pure and real seeker, a true Guru would approach us himself. The keenness of a disciple to get his Guru is relatively less intense than that of the Guru to have a true disciple. If we get a fraud Guru, god would free us fro his clutches. It is a rule that when a person has the desire towards his spiritual progress, he does not get stuck anywhere. When a seeker finds the holy company of exalted souls, he holds on to it and he sticks to it.

If you are determined to rise to attain salvation, then there is nobody who can stop you and if you are not keen for it, then even a good Guru or a sage cannot help you in the attainment of salvation, If you are ready to attain self realization, then not only the saints would encourage you but even the thieves, frauds, violent creatures like lions, snakes etc., and the whole world would help you to intensify your pursuit. I have experienced that if the person who is whole-heartedly devoted to God but is engulfed with hardships, these hardships also prove to be helpful in his spiritual progress, Not only this, even if a person who doesn't accept the existence of God, attains true wisdom if he develops true aspiration for salvation.

The Generosity of God, the Supreme Guru

The Generosity of God, the Supreme Guru
(Jagatguru Bhagwaan ki Udaartaa)

Shree Hari
There is an interesting story. A person observed a day's fast on Ekadasi. Next day he wanted to feed someone as per tradition, but due to heavy rains he could not find a suitable person. At last after a long search, he found an old monk. He invited the monk to his house for meals. He placed a plate full of food before the monk who started eating it instantly. The person reminded the monk that he should have offered the food to God before eating it. The monk abruptly said "What is God? You are a fool, you do not understand all this." On hearing this, that man removed the food plate and said "If God means nothing to you, then who are you to eat this food? We have offered this food to you for the sake of God only." That very moment, a mystic voice was heard saying
This monk has grown old while rebuking Me, but even then I have been providing him food all along. When you are refusing one day's meal to him, how can you claim yourself to be My devotee? If I don't arrange food for him how long would he survive? After hearing the divine command, the man left feeling very ashamed and begged the monk to pardon him and thereafter gave him food with great respect.
Aiso ko udaar jag maahim
Binu seva jo dravai deen par raam sarisa kou naahim || (Vinay Partrikaa 162)
In spite of this divine presence of such a generous God, if we suffer and expect a Guru to give us happiness and salvation, it is a stupid and deceptive proposition. It is more than sufficient if we prepare ourselves to attain salvation.
God is very compassionate. When He provides living to all of us, will he not help us to attain salvation? Therefore you should develop a sincere and strong desire for your salvation and pray to God "Oh! My Lord! Let me be free from worldly bondage and let me realize the ultimate truth. I don't know about any real bliss. Help me not to be involved with anything else but to attain the real bliss. Oh Lord! Guide me as to what I should do." God always responds to sincere prayers.

Sacche hrdey se praarthnaa, jab bhakt saccha gaaya hai |
To bhakt vatsal kaan mein, wah paunch jhat hi jaaya hai ||

God, saints and sages are more concerned about our salvation than we are. A mother is always worried about her children more than the children themselves are, but those children never realize it. Similarly God and His devotees remain engrossed in our welfare without any selfishness.

Hetu rahit jag jug upkaari | Tumh tumhaar sewal asuraari || (Manas, Uttar. 47/3)

The saints and sages are very eager to help and support those who move towards God with full sincerity. Saints' hearts are always overflowing with compassion for the welfare of others. Who does not feel like giving food to a hungry child?

If someone is very keen with all sincerity for his salvation, God definitely helps him. A guru can never be such a well-wisher of ours as God is -

Uma Raam sam hit jag maahim | Guru pitu maatu bandhi prabhu naahim ||
Sur nar muni sab kaai yah reetee | Swaarath laagi karahim sab preetee ||
(Manas, Kishkindhaa 12/1)

The Generosity of God, the Supreme Guru

The Generosity of God, the Supreme Guru
(Jagatguru Bhagwaan ki Udaartaa)

Shree Hari
God possesses endless virtues. All that has been written in the scriptures and stated by sages about the unlimited virtues of God is not sufficient to describe the full dimensions of God's virtues. Ardent devotee of the Lord, Goswami Tulisadasa also says -

"Ramu na sakahin naam gun gaayi" (Manas, Bala. 26/4)

Some other saints have also stated that even God Himself is not fully aware of His infinite strength. Out of infinite virtues there are three main virtues of God. Omniscience, Omnipotence and all Compassionateness. It means that none else other than God possesses so much knowledge, strength, and mercy. In spite of this strong support of God being at your disposal, if you fail to attain salvation and continue to suffer, how can an ordinary Guru lead you to salvation? Is a Guru more knowledgeable, powerful and generous than God? This is nothing more than an illusion and a deception. So long as a true yearning for salvation does not develop in yourself, even God cannot help you in attaining salvation, then how will a Guru (spiritual guide) lead you to the attainment of this goal?

The virtues that you see in Gurus and saints are not their own, but they have been derived in them by God and have been assumed by you. For example sweetness found in any sweet dish is basically due to sugar in it, similarly any virtue or speciality that you see anywhere in this world spring out from God only. The Lord says in Gita -

Yaddhyadvibhootimatsatvam Srimadoorjitammeva va |
Tattdevaavagaccha tvam mama tejonshsambhavam || (Gita 10/41)

"All the grand, delightful and powerful beings and objects that exist, are outcome of My excellence." (Gita 10/41)

Even the evil beings like demons who oppose God, originally derive their strength from God alone. Hanumanji tells Ravana -
Jaake bal lavalesa ten jitehu charaachar jhaari |
Taasoo doot mein jaa kari hari aanehu priya naari || (Manas, Sunder. 21)

Then shall the devotee of God be deprived of His strength? Be face to face with God, you shall be freed from sins of millions of lives.

Sanmukh hoyi jeev mohi jabahi | janam koti agh naasahin tabahin || (Manas, Sunder. 44/1)

But if you do not do so, there is no way out to be free from sins. The Almighty bestows strength on everyone whether he is His enemy, beloved or indifferent. God's creation, the earth accommodates all alike whether noble or evil, believer or non-believer, sinner or pious. His creations – such as food fulfills everybody's hunger, water satisfies everybody's thirst and air helps everyone to remains alive. God's grace is available in abundance for all beings even if some of them are most wicked and the vilest of sinners. We have to pay for electricity, water and living space but God has provided the Sun, moon, rivers and plenty of space just free of any charge. When His creations are so kind to human beings, you can imagine the infinite dimensions of His generosity for mankind.

Selfless Service - An Easy Discipline for Realization (Karmayog)

God is the Supreme Guru
(Bhagwaan Sab ke Guru Hai)

Shree Hari
Lord is the Guru (spiritual guide, master) of the entire World -
"Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum"
"Jagadgurum cha shaashvatam" (Manas, Aranya. 4/9)
He is not merely a Guru, rather is the eternal Master of all the Gurus.
"Sa Ishah paramo gururguruh" (Srimad Bhagwat 8/24/50)
"Tvamasya poojyasch gururgareeyaan" (Gita 11/43)
King Satyavrat says to the Lord -
"Like a blind person accepting another blind person as his guide to show path, ignorant people accept other ignorant ones as their Guru. O' Lord! You are illumed like the Sun, the sole illuminator, inspirer of all human senses. I the Self, the seeker of ultimate truth, elect You alone in the form of a Guru." (Srimad Bhagwat 8/24/50)

Most prominent of all devotees, king Prahlad says -
Shaastaa Vishnurasheshasya jagato yo hrdi sthitah |
Tamrute paramaatmanam taat kah ken shaasyate || (Vishnupuran 1/17/20)

"Lord Vishnu, situated in the heart is the guide and teacher of the whole world. Dear Father! who else can show the right path, other than the Lord Himself? No one can." (Vishnupuran 1/17/20)

Since God is the Guru of the whole world and we too are part of this world itself, how can we be devoid of a Guru? We are the disciples of the real great Guru. There is some danger of the Gurus of presnt times of Kaliyug, but we need not feel scared when the world's Almighty is our Guru. There is no chance of any loss or failure, rather there is nothing but gains. Therefore if we accept God as our Guru, study His utterances in Gita and reform our life accordingly, there is no doubt about our liberation. We may select any one - Krishna, Rama, Sankara, Hanuman, Ganesha or the Sun as our Guru.

The king of elephants Gajendra says

Yeh kashcnesho balinontkoragaat
Prachandvegaadabhidhaavato brsham |
Bheetam prapannam paripaati yadbhyaa -
Nmrutyuh pradhaavatyaranam tameemahi || (Srimad Bhagwat 8/2/33)

"The Lord Who give protection the the devotee, who seeks refuge in Him, from a highly poisonous fast running snake of time, and being scared of Whom even death is running, I take refuge in Him."

The essence of the Gajendra's statement is, "Even without knowing the identity of the Lord, I take shelter in Almighty God." In the same way if we surrender ourselves to God, either we shall get a right Guru or God himself shall become our Guru.

We are a part of God - "Mamaivaansho jeevaloke" (Gita 15/7). Therefore He is not onl our Guru, but he is father, mother, and everything for us. Actually we are not to bind ourselves with a worldly Guru. We have to accept our affinity with God. Real Guru is one who leads us to a deep bonding with God. We need not seek anybody's advice for this purpose because all beings are naturally and permanently bound with God and no middleman is required for this. Why should we create the distance of a middleman, between us and God when we are ourselves capable of having an intimate and direct relationship with Him. By doing so, we shall attain salvation even without seeking -

Ati durlabh kaivalya param pad | sant puraan nigam aagam bad ||
Ram bahat soyi mukuti gosaayi | an icchit aavayi bariaayi || (Manas, Utter. 119/2)

Therefore the Lord says in Gita –
Manmanaa bhava mad bhakto, madhyaajee maam namaskuru | (Gita 9/34, 18/65)
"Fix thy mind on Me, be devotee to Me, worship Me, prostrate thyself before Me."
Sarvadharmaanparityajya maamekum sharanam vraja | (Gita 18/66)

"Give up dependence on all duties and surrender completely to Me."
The Lord speaks of complete surrender to Him without becoming a Guru.

Selfless Service - An Easy Discipline for Realization (Karmayog)

Selfless Service - An Easy Discipline for Realization (Karmayog)
(Kalyaan ka Sugam Saadhan - Karmayog)

Shree Hari
Karmayog is so extra-ordinary, that whatever path (jnanayog or bhaktiyog) an aspirant follows, he will have to accept the method (there is nothing one has to do for one's self) of karmayog; because everyone has the power to do. God has said pertaining to jnanayog - "Sarvabhootahiterataah" (Gita 5/25; 12/4) and for Bhaktiyog He says " adveshtaa sarvabhootaanaam maitrah karuna eva cha" (Gita 12/13); by saying these two, he has said for both these, it is imperative to do for the welfare of others.

In karmayog, the doer is selfless, not the actions; because due to inertness, the action itself cannot be with or without a motive. Selfless actions takes place from a doer who is doing without a selfish motive. Therefore, whether you call it karmayog, or selfless service - the meaning of both is one and the same. There is no karmayog that is with a selfish motive. Therefore the sentiments of a doer must always remains free of any selfish motive.

Karmayogi cannot bare anything that is disadvantageous to anyone. As every part of the body has an indivisible relationship with whole body, similarly every part of this world has an indivisible relationship with the whole world. Just as a man becomes happy and sad with the pleasure and suffering of every part of his body, similarly, a karmayogi sees his own happiness and suffering in the pleasures and suffering of all beings. If the tongue is bitten by the teeth, no one has wanted to break their teeth. In the same way, karmayog does not believe in doing anything detrimental to harm, the world (so called body of ours).

Man has with him (the body, senses, mind, intellect, abilities, time, knowledge, money, land etc.). All the things that he has, is all-in-all obtained from the world; it is not personally belonging to him. It is evident, that we cannot exert any rights over all the things that we have acquired. We can neither keep these things according to our wishes, nor can we cause a change in them. We have neither brought these with us, nor will we take it back with us. In reality, these things have been received for using them (for engaging them in service of others) properly, never for exerting our rights over them.

God calls those individuals who enjoy the acquired things for their own pleasures, without putting these in the service of others, as thieves. - "Tairdattanpradaayaibhyo yo bhdankte stena eva sah." (Gita 3/12). Not just that, God calls such individuals as sinners, whose lives are not worth living. "Adhaayurindriyaaraamo modham paarth sa jeevati" (Gita 3/16).

With the body obtained from the world, so far we have only done things for ourselves, for our pleasures and enjoyment and for hoarding. Therefore we are indebted to the world. To reduce our liability to this world, we must only do actions for the benefit of this world. On doing actions, desiring fruit, the old debts are not reduced, and new debts are further born. You will have to take a new birth to be freed from the debts. By doing actions for the welfare of others, old debts come to an end, and by performing actions without a selfish motive, new debts do not arise. With this perspective (to be freed from birth and death), it is very essential to adhere to karmayog (discipline of selfless service)
(to be continued)
