Way to be Free of Attraction and Attachment to Pleasure

|| Shri Hari ||

(Sukhaasakti se Chootne ka Upaaya)

continued...

You are the one to know the arising and subsiding of desires. He who is the knower of the arising and perishing, is imperishable. He is great. That which is born and destroyed is smaller. But the one who knows about that which is born and destroyed is greater.

Questioner - Attachment to pleasure secures a strong hold, an entitlement over us. At that time we do not realize our power. We become weak and powerless, we become over-powered and defeated.

Swamiji - It is true that at the time that desires arise, attachment also is born, at that time it has a great impact on us; but have faith in the point that the real thing is only being free of desire. Therefore desires with a motive, cannot suppress the sentiments of being free of desires. Desires are born and they perish, but a state of being free off desires was existing before the desire was born, and it is existing after the desire ends and even while one is in the desirous state, then too it is there as-is.

In fact only the sentiments of being free of desire is eternal. Therefore when desires arise, do not accept defeat from them. Even if you have the biggest of desires, even if you are carried away in those desires, you come under the sway of these desires, then too have mercy and be aware of this one point that this desire will not last, doing so the state of being free of desires will remain. The desires arise and perish, but you are there at all times. Therefore desires are not in you, then how can it cover you? how can it make you fall? The time that you consider yourself to have fallen, at that time too, keep this point ever awakened that the desires are momentary (coming and going), they will not remain. God has clearly stated that be mindful of their coming and going, then very easily you will gain victory over them.

However much you flow away in your passion, but remember that it is "aagamaapaayiyo nityaah" . I have said many times, that Oh brother ! this is a "mantra" ! Just as if a scorpion bites, then through a "mantra" the poison can be removed, in the same way, if you start to repeat the mantra "aagamaapaayiyo nitya", than passion and other flaws will subside, their root will be cut off. there is that much power in God's spoken words ! This is a spiritual practice that requires some action, and it is very easy. You try to do and see for yourself.

I really like the following saying by the Lord - "Jushmaanasch taan kaamaan dukhodarkaasch garhayan" (11/20/28). If you are not able to renounce sense pleasures, then experience them, knowing them to be an abode of sorrow and not like them, then you will be freed from them. Even though coming under their influence and submission, do not get suppressed by them. Only remember the one thing that I am the kind that will remain, and these are the kind that will go away. Do it and see for yourself. Is this spiritual practice difficult? Think about this now, contemplate on it, then you will not forget it. The unreal (temporary) has no ability to stay. There is no existence of the unreal, and the real is never non-existent - "Naasato vidyate bhaavo naabhaavo vidyate satah" (Gita 2/16). You are existent and you become suppressed by the non-existent, then this suppression is not that much a mistake, as accepting the significance and importance of the unreal (temporary, perishable), thinking that this is simply irresistible. It is this belief alone that makes it appear so fantastic. (to be continued)

Way to be Free of Attraction and Attachment to Pleasure

|| Shri Hari ||

(सुखासक्तिसे छूटनेका उपाय)

The main obstacle is - attraction and attachment to pleasure born of contact (pleasure of union). This inner longing and craving, wishing, lust, greed for sense pleasures, is the main disease. This sense pleasures do not remain, if you give up its craving then it is a very straightforward task.

Wanting of sense objects, wishing for sense enjoyments, desiring to hoard, longing for honor, glories, rest and relaxation - these come in front of us and then they perish. Sometimes these wishes are fulfilled and sometimes they remain incomplete; sometimes they are partially fulfilled, and sometimes they dissipate; But we remain as-is. There is no change in the "self" (swaroop). If we become established in our "self" then desires will perish and if we get rid of the desires, then we will become established in the "self". Of these two, which ever you wish, you do. Truth can be realized by either having a quest to realize the Truth (Existent, Real) or by giving up the unreal (non existent).

All that you have to do is to get rid of the longing for that pleasure which arises and later dies, that is it. The pleasure born of contact that does not remain forever and that deprives us from the pleasure of the Supreme Essence that is ever-lasting and eternal, this is such a pointless thing! If we are not able to give-up such contact born pleasures, then what are we able to give up!

The desire for pleasure arises and subsides, but you do not arise and subside. The desire comes in you, but you are not in those desires. You are all pervasive, desires are in one place. In other words, you are at all places, but desires are at one place; you are at all times, desires are at a particular time. And if desires are there or not, there is no change in you, you remain as-is. It is only you who has held on to those desires. The desires have no power to grab hold of you. At the time of "satsang" the desires do not remain, therefore one experiences that Essence remains as-is. On having desires, this realization does not remain. Therefore the question that arises is that while listening to satsang, the feelings that are there, the same sentiments do not remain at other times. In fact, that Essence is eternal and constant, and remains as is. Whether you listen to satsang, or you don't, whether you associate with bad company, the Existent Element remains as is, it never perishes. But your sight continues to go towards the unreal (perishable, ever-changing, non-existent) , then that unreal, non-existent dominates over you, and it appears as if the real and existent has not remained. That which is there at some times and not other times, how can it be real (existent)? The real and existent is present as-is at all times, constantly. The longing for the unreal does not have the power to hide the real; because the real (existent) is pervasive and the unreal (perishable) is "vyaapya". It is not that an ordinary, base thing, overshadows a great thing, covers it up. "Avrutam jnaanametena..." (Gita 3/39), "Due to this desire, this knowledge is concealed" - by this it means that knowledge is not concealed, your vision, your sight is concealed. Just as when the clouds come, the Sun cannot be seen, then we say that the Sun is hidden. But in reality, the Sun is not hidden, our eyes are hidden. The sun is even bigger in size then the the earth. How can it be hidden by a few tiny clouds? In the same way desires come, then we begin to believe that we have come under the sway of desires. The desires have become victorious over us. As such, this is not the case. How can desire hide you "self" ? Desires are trivial, and you are great - "nitya sarvagatah sthaanurachaloyam sanaatanah" (Gita 2/24) (to be continued)

Main Obstacle to God Realization is Attraction to Sense Pleasures

|| Shri Hari ||
(Paramatmapraapti mein Mukhya Baadha - Sukhaasakti)

continued....
When God is present, why are you suffering? There are three points in God - God is Omniscient (All knowing), Eternally compassionate and Almighty. Remember these three points, and contemplate on them. Being Omniscient, he understands our pain. Being compassionate, He cannot tolerate our pain, He melts on seeing our pain. Being Almighty, He can get rid of our pain. Of these three points, if anyone point is not there, then it will be difficult. Just as, if a person is compassionate, but he is not aware of our suffering, or if He is compassionate, and knows about our pain, but is incapable of getting rid of that suffering! But when all three points are there, and we are still suffering, then it is a very surprising thing!

There was a "kaayasth" (name of a Hindu community) gentleman. He said to me that what to do, my daughter has grown up, but still she is not married. I said to him, that right now only you are worrying about her, but if you worry more, than you and I both will begin to worry, both will begin to cry, what more will we be able to do ? If the compassion grows, then I too will begin to cry, what more can we do? I do not have money, I do not have that much power. In the same way if God feels sorry and if we are not that capable, then all he can do is cry, what else can he do? However, He is entirely capable, He is omniscient and He is compassionate, whereby out of His deep kindness He gets deeply moved. When these three things are present, why are we suffering? In this the reason is, that we do not believe in Him, then what can God do, tell me?

Questioner - The shortcoming is in us only, Maharajji!
Swamiji - Only we will have to remove our own shortcomings, whether we remove it today, whether we do it after a few days, whether we do it after a month, whether we do it after a year, or whether we do it after several lifetimes, it is up to you! When you want to remove it, then you will. Whether you do it now, or after infinite births.
You have accepted the world as your own, and you have not accepted God as your own - this is at the root of all obstacles. Therefore accept God as your own - "mere toh Giridhar Gopal, Doosero na koyi." "Only God is mine, there is none other." You are accepting God as your own, but you do not accept the second part, which is "there is none other". Without accepting this there cannot be exclusivity. It is only when the mind is exclusively fixed on God, that for them God is easily attainable. "Ananyachetaah satatam.. tasyaaham sulabh paarth". (Gita 8/14). The condition is only one - to not to regard the many others as your own.
एक बानि करुनानिधान की ।
सो प्रिय जाकें गति न आन की ॥ (मानस ३/१०/४)
Ek baani karunaanidhaan ki |
so priya jaaken gati na aan ki ||
If besides God there is no other support, there is no other love, there is no other aim, then that one is dear to God. Therefore with exclusive feelings, accept God as your very own. Doing so, is in our hands. It is dependent on us.
You need the support of others in listening to talks, in reading holy books, scriptures etc., but in doing, it has to be done by you only.

Narayan! Narayan !! Narayan !!!

Main Obstacle to God Realization is Attraction to Sense Pleasures

|| Shri Hari ||

(Paramatmapraapti
mein Mukhya Baadha - Sukhaasakti)

continued....
In
this the obstacle is that  the objects that we know to be perishable we regard  these as our own.  This is a mistake.  We find it difficult to get rid of this fault.  Realization of the Supreme Essence is easy,  but the difficulty is in renouncing the world.   We hoard the very same things that we know to be transient and perishable.  We seek pleasure from it -   it is dangerous to take this step .  We must change this.  Even in this step, it is only a change in the
inner sentiments, that how can others gain happiness?  Start from your home, - how can mother, father, wife, son, family  be happy?   But in return, stop expecting to take pleasure from them.    Your state is such that you do not give happiness to those from whom there is no hope of getting happiness in return.
Whereas there continues to be the expectation to gain pleasure from those you give  pleasure  to.  This is the main obstacle.   Therefore having no expectation of  getting happiness from others, rather, give happiness to others, give rest and relaxation to others,  honor other's point of view.   If you insist on your own views and points, then it will cause many  problems.
T here is bondage in insisting on your own views and ideas.  Bondage begins when knowing full well that the perishable  objects will not remain, then too becoming Pleased with them and relishing them.

Questioner - Maharajji, it has become our nature to take enjoy pleasures!
Swamiji - Brother !  It is for leaving those habits that we are gathered here!  Are you getting any money here !  There is no greater progress than improving one's habit.   There is no greater goal of man than purifying your nature.   There is no greater gain than this.   Your goal,  endeavor, effort must be to see to the
improvement of your nature.   Only nature can improve, what else can improve,  tell me?   Only the nature improves of even those who are saints and great souls.   There is no change in the body, only   there is change in nature.   therefore it is  our  habits, our nature,  that we have to purify.   We have to remove all the impurities that come in it.  This is the  and only main work
that has to be done.

Remember this that we are independent in improving our nature, we are not dependent.   It s not so that someone else will do it.  Only you will have to do it, then it will happen.  Whenever it be, it is you only that will have to do.  You had put forward a question, that this will happen by Guru's grace or by the grace of a
saint, then I will share with you an exceptional point on this subject.  If it happens by Guru's grace, then it is if you believe in the Guru, then it will happen.   God's grace is been there from time immemorial, but if you accept, then it will do its work.  Therefore it is said in the Gita, that  uplift your self by the self.  -  "uddharedaatmanaatmaanam"  (Gita 6/5).  Without your acceptance, what will the Guru do?  If we accept someone as a guru, if we believe in a saint  or a mahatma , then his grace will
flow.  ( to be continued)

Main Obstacle to God Realization is Attraction to Sense Pleasures

|| Shri Hari ||
(Paramatmapraapti
mein Mukhya Baadha - Sukhaasakti)

continued....
Questioner -  Maharajji !  We do not always get `satsang'
Swamiji -  Then whenever you get it, that time grab hold of it.  I have heard an exceptional point on the subject of satsang, that satsang takes place only once, not twice.   Twice one may hear, one may discuss, one may reflect, one may perform actions.  Real actions, real reflection, real listening, real sharing / relaying!  these can happen time and again, but "sat ka sang"  i.e. association with the "real"  (truth), takes place only once.   If it takes place once, then it takes place once and for all, forever. It is only for that one time "satsang", that one has to do time and again.
When one realizes their real-self (becomes enlightened) then satsang has taken place once and for all.   When the eye opens, then it opens once and for all.  Does one need to practice to wake up from sleep?  Yes one can attain salvation through practice, but there is much delay in this.  However, on becoming
enlightened,  on acceptance of God or on renunciation, one can attain salvation immediately.   Enlightenment, belief and renunciation,  can never be compartmentalized.  They take place all at once, in an instant -  baam !!!
Just as after marriage,  to regard the wife as your own does not require any practice. It requires no effort whatsoever.  You firmly, undoubtedly accept that
she is my wife. In the same way when you accept a Guru, it is the same belief.  Likewise  "God is mine"  one must firmly believe and accept.   Just as it is deeply ingrained in the wife,  that this man is my husband and vice-versa.
Greater than this acceptance is the acceptance that God is mine. The feelings and sentiments by husband and wife is created by themselves, but we are God's is not our own creation,  rather it is self-evident and axiomatic. Your attention simply has to go in this direction that Oh ho!  I belong to God!  Just as Arjuna said - "Nashto mohah smrutirlabdhvaa"  (Gita 18/73).  My delusion is destroyed,  and I now recollect !  Recollection, is not new knowledge, it is not a new relationship.   If one remembers the relationship with God,  then this is a lot stronger bond than that of husband and wife.  Because relationship with husband and wife is assumed, and later begins.  There was no relationship at first. When the couple gets married,  at that time the relationship begins.  But relationship with God does not have a beginning.  This is an eternal relationship.  We have to only accept this relationship.   There is no reason for delay in this relationship.  The day you accept it, that very same day,  satsang will take place.  "Sat ka Sang"  (association with Truth, Real) takes place !
