It is Essential to Get Rid of Interest in Transitory Pleasures

|| Shri Hari ||

continued...
The relish for sense enjoyments can never be satisfied.  It will eventually quieten down.  Fulfillment of relish is not possible.   As you continue to enjoy sense pleasures,  accumulate money,  relish for it will continue to increase -

"Jimi Pratilaabh lobh adhikaayi".

Na jaatu kaamah kaamanaamupabhogen shaamyati |
havishaa krishnavatrmeva bhooya evaabhivardhate ||
(Srimad Bhagwat 9/19/14)

By the enjoyment of sense objects, the relish is not quietened.  If you continue to gradually add "ghee" (clarified butter) in the fire, then will the fire die down?  No, it will increase even more.  In the same way,  relish for sense enjoyments and hoarding continues to go on increasing.  In the end, you will have to leave everything and die.  This relish you have for honor - respect, name-fame, hoping that people may think good of you,  think you to be great and high up there, getting comfort,  pleasure,  and others are behaving favorable towards you,  these are all very deadly.   They are lethal for an aspirant.  There is not even the slightest bit of benefit in this, rather there is great loss.

It is not at all so that the relish does not go away.  If the relish were to not go
away,   then it would not go away for anything.  To date, no one's relish has
been fulfilled,  but the relish of many have been wiped out "Bahavo
gyaanatapasaa poota madbhaavamaagataah" Gita 4/90.
  In
history, there have been thousands, who have been able to overcome their relish, but you will not find a single man who was able to satisfy his relish.   That which can never be fulfilled,  then for you what is the harm in leaving it?

Questioner -  Maharajji,  the interests and relish we had in childhood,  those have died.  But till childhood, those interests did remain.

Swamiji -  The childhood relish and interest will not change, whether you become old or not.  The object changed, the place changed, but the relish and interest that was there before, still remained, it did not go away.  Now if you get rid of it, then it cannot last.   If you try to hold on to it, then it will not go away.  If you hold on to it, then even Brahmaji does not have the power to get rid of it.  Many great saints and great souls, liberated great men too cannot get rid of your relish.   If you get rid of it then it will go away.   If you do not leave it then how will they make you leave it?   If you so desire then it can go away; and if it does not go away,  then pray,  cry,  say to God that this is not going away, then by God's grace, it will go away.  The main point is that you do not even think about leaving it.
There is one exceptional point that there is great importance to renouncing worldly relish, it is not even as important to imbibe good qualities such as compassion,  forgiveness, generosity etc.  The spiritual practice of renouncing, it is even greater than one of doing something, but people give little attention  to it.  By renouncing the evil, the good (actions that should be done) happens on its own.  One does not have pride in the spiritual practice that takes place on its own.
Gita has expressed that a man who has relish for pleasures is a constant enemy of the Jnaani
(
Viveki)  -  "jnaanino nityavairinaam"  (Gita 3/39). An ignorant man sees pleasure in sense enjoyments.  But the moment relish for pleasure arises in a "jnaani,"
he understands that this is the kind that will lead to his destruction.   It
will never be fulfilled.  This is a fire, fire - "dushpoorenaanalena cha"!
There will be great loss due to this.    Therefore gentlemen!  minimally do at
least that much that do not perform any action coming under the sway of relish for pleasure.  Coming under the sway of sense pleasures, i
f you continue to act,
then it is the kind that will never go away.  It will not go away even after
thousand, lakhs, crore, ten crore life-times.
      However much you may study,  even if you become a great scholar and orator,  however many books you write,  however great and famous you become,  but as long as there is relish for contact born pleasures, till then there will not be peace.  This relish for pleasure, will surely lead to your downfall. As much harm that is taking place, all is happening due to it.   All the groaners and moaners, the sufferers, the ones that are crying, undergoing a lot of suffering, screaming, lying in hell,  in the 8.4 million wombs,  are all the fruits of relish for enjoyment. As long as this relish remains, you will not experience any kind of peace.  Therefore have mercy, destroy this relish.  If you are not able to do it, then pray to God that Oh Lord!  may this relish be wiped out once and for all!

       If the interest to get rid of the relish in pleasures is awakened within, in other words,  if you develop a firm determination that I want to get rid of this, then it will go away.

Questioner -  How can undivided, exclusive spiritual practice take place?

Swamiji -  Undivided, exclusive spiritual practice will take place when one leaves attraction to worldly pleasures.   If you get rid of the interest in hoarding worldly things and in gaining sense pleasure from it, then you will be greatly benefited. In this there is no doubt whatsoever.  I am not saying about renouncing money, I am not saying to become a sadhu.  I join my hands and pray to you with utmost sincerity that some way or the other get rid of this relish you have for enjoying sense pleasures and for hoarding things.   If that relish goes away, then there will be much gains.  This desire, will lead to downfall of both the world and you; you will gain nothing besides that.   Relish for hoarding and sense enjoyments is very detrimental, there is no doubt about this.  The relish for the transitory, is the root cause of ruins.   Even drinking poison is not so ruinous, as this is -      It is said in the Ashtavakra Gita that -

If you desire liberation then give up sense objects, as if they were poison.
(१/२)

There is only one point that the inclination for the world must end.  In place of inclination for the world, develop inclination for God, enlightenment, liberation, love of God,  beholding God, then you will be most benefited.  In this there is no doubt.  You cannot live because of desire to live.   Even though you may want to live, then too you will have to die.  If you give up the inclination to live,  then there will be no harm, rather there will be much gains.   Even if the relish and inclination is reduced, then too there will be much gains.   Not coming under the sway of relish, then too there will be gains -

Tayorna vashmaagacchet || (Gita 3/34)
If you eradicate it, then what more to say!

Questioner -  This relish does not go away Maharajji !

Swamiji -   Your present condition is that this relish is not going away.  It is not that the relish does not go away, rather it is not the kind that will remain.  The interest you had for toys in childhood, that interest is not there at present, is it?  The interest you had in pebbles, stones and colored glass pieces in childhood, is not there today, is it?  It is not that the relish is not going away, the relish is unable to last at all.  It cannot stay.  You give rise to new interest and relish,    and then you say that it does not go away !  The relish cannot last. The relish for the transitory, will remain transitory only.   If you have an inclination for God, then that will not end, rather the result will be that it will make you realize God.  Gita says -

"Jigyasurapi Yogasya shabda Brahmaativartate." (Gita 6:44)

A seeker of Yoga, transcends actions and their fruits as laid down by the
Vedas, and will surely attain God Realization or salvation.

If you do not have such quest, then no problem.  When worldly inclination is removed, then quest for Union with Divinity will also take place.  It is entirely false that inclination does not go away.   It is you present condition that you cannot get rid of this relish, due to which you are saying so.

Interest in hoarding and enjoying sense pleasures is cause of much harm.   The association of saints is the gateway to liberation and association with men inclined toward sense enjoyment and pleasure, is the gateway to hell -

Association with sense enjoyments and pleasure is not as harmful, as the association of people with relish and inclination is harmful.   It is like saying that an association with a lepor, can cause leprosy.   Therefore having inclination towards sense enjoyments, is harmful both for yourself and the world, and it is very beneficial to give it up.  Therefore have mercy and do that which is beneficial for the world.   If you cannot do what is beneficial, then at least do not do anything harmful.   (to be continued)

Way to be Free of Attraction and Attachment to Pleasure

|| Shri Hari ||

(Sukhaasakti se Chootne ka Upaaya)

continued...
For many years I had this deep seated longing to know that where is the confusion?  Where is the obstacle arising?   Even without wanting, the desire for honor and praise, respect and hospitality, and acquisition of things arises,  then where is it residing?  Why have these not gone away?  After many years I discovered the the root of these,  and that is -  the eager and keen desire for pleasures.

I got this point after many years,  and I have told you right away, immediately.  You got this point easily,  therefore you do not honor it.  If it cam to you with much difficulty, then you would value it.  If you wandered around in the mountains, went to Badrinarayana,  intensely searched,  and became so restless wandering around, and thereafter if you met a saint, and if he told you this point, then you would value it and pay attention to it.  But at present, you are earning money,  sitting comfortably at home with your family and the spiritual talks come to you easily at your doorstep, therefore you do not give it any importance.  On the contrary, you think that Swamiji is simply saying so.  If he were to sit in the shop then he would know !  In this manner, you give weight to your point of view only.  What is the realization from all this?   That our point is correct,  his (Swamiji's) point is weak.  You have attained victory,  but what have you gained?  You have won, and I have lost, but in winning, you have only been harmed.  You only have suffered a loss.

There was a rich man who said that Swamiji does not understand the very nature (essence) of money, so I said that see,  I have also kept money,  and I have also renounced, therefore I understand both these things.  But you have only kept money,  you have not given up money, therefore you only know one aspect of it, you do not know both of these things.  There is no real essence in money.  You are suppressed due to your greed. You have accepted the importance of money, then you say that we know.  It is a disgrace to say that you know.   You simply don't know at all.

To know God, one has to become connected with God.    And to know the world, one has to become disconnected from the world.   By staying disconnected from God, one cannot know God, and by connecting with the world, one cannot know the world - this is a principle.  Why is this a principle?  As in fact, you are inseparable from God and apart from the world.  But you have accepted yourself to be apart from God and inseparable from the world.  Now how will you know?  He who smokes cigarettes, etc., cannot know cigarettes etc.  He who gives these up, that one alone knows these well.

One time I had said that leave tea drinking.  Many of you left tea drinking.  A lawyer was sitting nearby, who did not say a single word.  After three-four days,  he came to me and said that I too left tea the very same day, but I did not have the guts to speak in front of everyone.  After leaving tea, it came to my understanding that the cup in which a beef eater drinks tea, in which a person who has a severe infectious disease drinks tea,  from the very same cup we are drinking tea!  From this it is proven that without renouncing the world, one cannot know its real nature (Essence).

If you sincerely long to realize the Truth (real, Eternal), then the unreal (temporary) will leave on its own.  Of the two, if you do any one, then both will take place.  Associating with the unreal (perishable),  having attachment to it, you will not know the unreal, and remaining distant from the real,  speaking out scholarly and well-seasoned talks, even on becoming a great orator, then too you will not come to know the Truth (real).

An easy means of becoming free of attraction and attachment to the world is to give happiness to others.  Give happiness to everyone - mother, father, wife, son, brother, brother-in-law, etc., but do not take pleasure from them, then very easily you will become free of these attachments.

Narayan ! Narayan !! Narayana !!!

Way to be Free of Attraction and Attachment to Pleasure

|| Shri Hari ||

(Sukhaasakti se Chootne ka Upaaya)

continued...

There was a Rajput (a particular type of Kshatriya), and there was a person from the merchant class. They collided into each other, then the trader made the Rajput fall to the ground and stood on top of him. The Rajput asked him - Oh! Who are you? He said I am of the merchant class. On hearing this the Rajput in a fighting spirit said ! Oh! a man from a merchant class is bullying me ! how can it be so! An immediately, he forced the merchant down to the floor. This is just an example. The point is that you are the kind to remain at all times, and passion, desires do not remain at all times.

Just as the Rajput thought that I am a Kshatriya (of the warrior class). A merchant cannot crush me. In the same manner, you too are a Rajput, you are the son of God. Now think that how can the desire for the unreal (perishable) suppress you? Desire is for the unreal and the desire itself is also unreal, it is impossible that it can suppress the real. That is all there is to it. It is not some lengthy-complicated thing. Now what is difficult about this? Tell me? It is a straight-forward point. Have a little courage, that I am the kind that remains at all times. From childhood to now, I am the same one. At first too I was there, now too I am there, and later on too, I will remain. If not who will suffer or enjoy the consequences of their past actions? I am the kind that remains, where as, this body and the various unreal things will not remain at all. How can I submit to these things? I cannot! Do not lose courage.

Himmat mat chhodo naraam,mukh sun kahataam Raam

Hariyaa himmat soon kiyaam, dhruv ka atal dhaam ||

It is a very easy point. You don't think through everything, and that is the main roadblock. Neither you think yourself, nor do you accept something that is told to you. Now what to do, tell me? You are existent (eternal, real), and these poor things are non-existent (unreal, perishable). Uselessly you become suppressed by it. You have not paid attention towards your own greatness. Who are you - you do not look towards this. You are an "ansh" (part) of Paramatma. How can the "unreal" (temporary) last in you? This unreal has gained power only due to your power. It does not have any strength and power of its own. This is unreal only! You are "sat" (real, existent), and you only have given it significance.

Just as when someone's son dies then one feels great bereavement and pain, that the son is now gone away! The son died once, but mourning takes place daily, then tell me is the lamenting predominant, or the boy's dying predominant? The boy died one time, that is the end of it, but you keep the lamenting alive. Where does the lamenting have any ability to stay? The mourning came about due to the dying of the son! You will not be able to hold on to that mourning. After a few years, you will forget it. It will go away by itself. Time and again you remember it and keep it alive, then too you will not be able to keep it alive. After ten-fifteen years, it will not even be remembered. Therefore, do not give importance to the things that is born, that later die. Do not be concerned about them. Our point is only that why are you giving important to the unreal (temporary, perishable)? Why are you not giving importance to "vivek" (power of discrimination)? (to be continued)
