Eternal Union with God and Its Realization

||  Shri Hari  ||
Eternal Union with God and Its Realization
(नितॠययोग तथा उसका अनॠभव)

15th July, 2013, Monday,
Aashadh Shukla Saptami, Vikram Samvat 2070, Somvar

Prakriti (Nature) and Purusa (soul or spirit)  -  "Both are said to be without beginning"  (Gita 13/19).   Though both of them are beginningless, yet they are distinct in nature. Prakriti is always active while in Purusa there is no activity at all.  This distinction should be understood clearly.

In the scriptures Prakriti is said to have two states - inactive and active.  But in fact the form state is called inactive when it is compared with the active state otherwise activity in its subtle form never ceases.  For example when we perform our daily duties during wakefulness or when we are asleep, the activity in the form of decay of body never stops.   In sleep also there are three kinds of activity.  The first is that our light sleep gradually turns into sound sleep *.   The second is that by removing our tiredness we are refreshed.  The third one is that the body decays and paces towards extinction.   This activity of decay naturally goes on constantly from the creation to the dissolution of the universe.  Prakriti is said to be inactive when the universe is dissolved.  Why is it said to be inactive?   It is said to be inactive because there is no creation at that time.  In reality Nature never remains inactive.  In Nature activity goes on during all states -   of wakefulness, dream, sleep, unconsciousness, trance, creation, new creation, dissolution, and final dissolution all the time.  An activity is going on every moment in all the evolutes of Nature such as minds, intellect, senses, bodies, riches, stars,  planets, sun, moon, earth and oceans etc.   There is a continuous process from birth to death in them even though they appear steady in the middle.  Actually there is no such steadiness.  When we say that water of the Ganges is flowing at the same place where it was flowing yesterday, it does not mean that it is steady at the same place, but it means that it is continuously flowing.  Similarly the bodies and the world are also vanishing continuously, though they seem steady.  But God and the "self" remain uniform without the least activity or change or decay.  had there be any activity in them, they would have not remained uniform but would have changed.

Everyone realizes that the self is distinct from every activity of Nature.  Our activities of today are different from those of boyhood.  The body passes through childhood, youth and old age naturally without making any effort while I (the self) ever remain the same.  We have identified the self with the body.  So the activity of the body appears to be the activity of the self.   So we say,  "I am young,  I am a young boy,  I am old, I am sick,  I am healthy etc,"   Identification of the self with the body is ignorance and its non-identification is wisdom.  Lord Krishna declares -  "The knowledge of Kshetra (body) and shetrajna (self) is true wisdom.   This is my verdict"  (Gita 13/2) .

An aspirant should realize the fact that all activities occur in the body only.  It is only the body which lives and dies, while the self is ageless.  Death destroys the body only.  All physical activities of the gross body, reflection of the subtle body and trance* of the causal body come under the sway of death while the self is not subject to death.   There is no activity at all in the self.   The self stands witness to all activities.  He who remains established in the steady self is liberated, while he who is established in the active body is in bondage.

(Karmayog ka Tattva)

||  Shri Hari  ||
Essence of Karmayog - Discipline of Action
(Karmayog ka Tattva)
First and the foremost,  I am sharing with you one point.  Please give your full attention to it.    Is divinity (Essence, God)  present everywhere or not?    The answer to this is that those who believe in God,  they will all say, that God is every where.   This is the main point.  On this subject, I am sharing four points.

1)  God is everywhere
2)  God is present at all times
3)  God is in everything
4)  God belongs to everyone.

It is not that He is close to me and distant from you.   God belongs to even the worst of worst of sinners,   with the worst of conduct,  as much as, He belongs to saints and great souls,  liberated person,   enlightened beings,  and to the lovers of God.  God is not distant whatsoever from His side. Rather it is the being (jeev) who is distant.

God is everywhere, therefore, is He present here or not?    If God is not here,   then it cannot be said that He is present in all places.   We can say that besides this place,  He is everywhere, but then too the use of the word "everywhere"  cannot be used.   In the same way,  God is present at all times,  therefore He is He present right now  or not?   If he is not present right now,  then who would not dare  to say that that He is present at all times.   Similarly God is in all things,  then is He in us or not?  Is God present or not in the body, life breath,  senses,  mind,  intellect and ego (I am)  or not?  If He is not in these things then how can one say that God is present in all things If he is in all things-  then he is also in me. There is no "believer" who dares to stay that God is not within him.  If he is not mine, then saying He is everyones --   this is improper.  All beings are His "ansh"  (part of Him) -  "mamaivaansho jeevaloke"  (Gita 15/7),  Ishvar ansh Jeev abinaasi (Manas. Uttar.  117/1).  God says that I am the eternal well-wisher of all beings -  "Suhrudam sarvabhootaanaam"  (Gita 5/29),  It is not that God is not a well-wisher of any one being,  such a thing is not possible.   That which is everywhere,  is in all things and is everyone's -  for attaining such a God, what is one to do?  Exercise and proceed with any one "yog"  (disciplines).   Here the thread (discussion) is on Karmayog, therefore I am sharing points about Karmayog.

When will we have an eternal relationship (yog, union) with God?   When we will not do any work for ourselves.   Eating-drinking,  standing-sitting,  sleeping-waking,  contemplation,  worship and adoration and deep trance all of these are not for our selves at all, then genuine "karmayog" will take place.   By doing things for one's self,   it will be "bhog"  (self indulgence),  not "yog"  (Union).   This is the main point.

For ourselves we need to do nothing whatsoever -   on listening to this a man stalls, that if we do not do for ourselves, then who do we do for?   I tell you one thing,   if it is opposed to your views, then forgive me.   Even "japa" (divine name repetition) is not for you,   even austerities is not for you,  deep trance (samadhi) is also not for you,  prayer is also not for you  -  all these do not need to be done for ourselves.   The reason being that in essence we are a part (ansh) of God -

"Ishvar ansh Jeeva abinashi |  Chetan Amal Sahaj Sukhraasi ||   (7/117/1)
Soul being a part of God is naturally sentient, pure and an embodiment of bliss.

What does one have to do for that which is consciousness,  untainted (free of all flaws) and ever blissful?   For that one has to do nothing at all.    (to be continued)

Essence of Karmayog - Discipline of Action

||  Shri Hari  ||
Essence of Karmayog - Discipline of Action

As such there are very few who know what is Karmayog?. To meet an enlightened liberated great soul is difficult, but to meet one to knows the essence of Karmayog, is even more difficult ! Approximately 5,000 years ago, God said that due to the passage of time, that Karmayog, was lost from the world - "Sa kaaleneh mahataa yogo nashtha parantap" (Gita 4/2).

Now it is all the more dissipated (gone underground). The holy texts do not have a description of Karmayog. Even in literary works and education you cannot find a description of Karmayog. Even in "satsang" you cannot find a critical analysis of "karmayog". Its study has been lost over time. Therefore talks of "karmayog" appear to be difficult. I am sharing with you its main essence.

First point is that whether you call it "karmayog", or you call it "selfless work" it is one and the same. There is no word as "Nishkaam karmayog", the meaning of this does not set right. However even the people with good, understanding end up saying "Nishkaam Karmayog" (Discipline of Selfless Action). Therefore it is difficult to say that it is totally wrong to say - "Nishkaam karmayog". Either you may say "Nishkaam Karma" or you may say "Karmayog," both these are alright. But how can it be "Nishkaam Karamyog"? But what to do? Who to tell?

I feel great sadness that among both the brothers and sisters, there is no one who has yearning and longing to know this essence, to be willing to know it. I do not insist on you accepting and believing at all. But minimally atleast know what it is. Whether you believe or not, it is up to you. But what is the essence - let there be a yearning within. According to me to understand this essence you are not ineligible, you are not unauthorized. All of you, all-in-all can understand this. But you do not try to understand, then what to do about that?

There is two places in the Gita where the definition of "Yog" has come - equanimity is called "yog" - samatvam yog ucchyate (Gita 2/48) and when one entirely parts with sorrow, then it is also called "Yog" - "tam vidyaad duhkhsamyogviyogam yogasangitam" (Gita 6/23). What is equanimity? Equanimity is brahma - "nirdosham hi samam Brahm' (Gita 5/19). When does one have complete disassociation with sorrow? On attaining eternal bliss, one becomes free from sorrow. There are many yogs - Karmayog, Jnanayog, Bhaktiyog, and Hathayog, Rajyog, Mantrayog etc. The meaning of all these yogs is that the eternal union, the eternal relationship we have with Paramatma (God) is awakened. Paramatma always has an eternal union with "jeev" (being). Karmayog is that which is the work (actions) is for the world, and union is with God (Paramatma). Now whether you call is doing work with the sentiments of selflessness (nishkaam bhaava) or you call it "Karmayog".

Question - Through "Karmayog" how can you realize the Essence, the divinity (God, Paramatma)?
Swamiji - Now pay attention. You have doubts that we are doing actions for the benefit of the world, then by this, how can you realize God? Just as if we are going to Badrinarayan, then how can we reach Dwarka? Where are we putting our efforts and where (in a different place) are we ending up, is this even possible? We are going towards the North and we reach the south, or we are going East and we reach the West - how is this possible? It is not at all possible. It is for this reason that such doubts arise. Yes, this is a valid point, a genuine doubt. (to be continued)

FINAL DISCOURSE

Eight years ago, early morning on Aashad Krishna Dvadashi day, on Vikram Samvat - 2062 (Indian Calendar) and (as per English calendar at 3:40 a.m. on 3rd July 2005), Swami Ramsukhdasji left for the Eternal Abode.  Below is the last discourse,  given on June 29-30 at Gita Bhawan, Rishikesh,  Swarg Ashram)

One excellent, very easy, very straight forward point. That is - Do not have any desires of any sort, whatsoever. Neither of Paramatma (God), nor of Self (Atma), nor of the World, nor of Salvation, nor of Benediction, have no desires at all and be silent. Be still. Because Paramatma is present in all places, in the form of stillness. If there is no want, no desire of any sort, then Paramatma can be realized instantly, Self-Realization can take place, perfection and complete fulfillment is attainable !

This is everyone's experience that some desires are fulfilled and others are not. It is not a rule that all desires will be fulfilled. The fulfillment of all desires is not in our hands, but it is in our hands to give up desires. When no more wishes, no more desires remain, then you will be naturally situated in Paramatma. You will have the realization (experiential knowledge) of God. No wants, nothing to do, no place to go, no place to arrive, nothing to study, nothing to practice, that is all there is - only these simple points.  In just these few words, everything has been said entirely ! It is due to desiring something that we experience bondage in this world. On leaving these desires completely, once and for all, one becomes naturally, situated in Paramatma (God),  who is present everywhere, in entirety.

In all your activities remain neutral and impartial. Have no attachment (likes) and aversion (dislikes).
"Tulasi mamata Ram so, samtaah sab sansaar
Raag ne rosh ne dosh dukh, daas bhaye bhav paa." (Dohaavali 94)

There are actions and there are objects. Both these are in Nature (Prakriti). While discontinuing relationship with objects and actions, become dependent on only Paramatma (God). Take refuge in only God,  That is It. You are already naturally situated in God.
In a dream a lady's child was lost.  She was deeply distressed and grieving. But when she woke up from her sleep, she saw that her child is sleeping right next to her - The point of this message is that wherever you are, there Paramatma (God) IS completely and entirely. Wherever you are, there itself be still !!
From last discourse in Hindi by Swami Ramsukhdasji on June 29th, 2005 at Gita Bhavan, Swargashram, Rishikesh, India, where Swamiji last resided.

Question:  Yesterday you said that have no wants.  Leave desires and become silent, of these two,  which one is more beneficial?
Swamiji -   I am God's,  God is mine, I belong to no one else,  and no one else is mine.  Accept this.  Becoming free of desires and becoming silent -  both these are the same.  Let there be no desire at all,  neither of sense enjoyments, nor of liberation,  nor of love, nor of devotion, nor anything else.
Questioner -  One is not to desire, but if some work needs to take place then?
Swamiji -  Do the work with great enthusiasm,  do it round the clock,  but don't have any want.  Understand this point properly.  Serve others, try to remove their sorrows, but in return do not want anything from them. Serve them,  and then become silent.  If working somewhere, take the wages, but do not desire anything.
The main point is that wherever you are, there itself is God.  If you desire nothing, then you will be situated in only God.   When all is God only, then what is there to desire?    It is due to desiring the world, that we are in the world.  When there is no desire, then we are situated in God.

Way to be Free of Sorrow

||  Shri Hari ||

Way to be Free of Sorrow
(दुःख-नाशका उपाय)

continued......

Actions (karma) are of three kind - “shukla” (virtuous actions), “krushna” (sinful actions) and “mishshrit” (combined). Ordinary people perform actions of these three kinds, but the “yogi” who renounces his actions, he does not become the experiencer or enjoyer of any actions -

कर्माशुक्लाकृष्णं योगिनस्त्रिविधमितरेषाम्’ (योगदर्शन ४/७), ‘न तु सन्न्यासिनां क्वचित् (गीता १८/१२)

“karmaashuklaakrishnam

yoginastrividhmitareshaam” (Yogadarshan 4/7), “na ta sansyaasinaam kvachit (Gita 18/12). No worldly pleasure or pain reach him whatsoever. When they do not reach at all, then how can he become pleased or displeased ? Circumstances are according to one’s actions (karmas). As are the actions, so are the situations that come in front of the person, but they do not cause him to be happy or sad.

There is a story in Bhagwat. In childhood, Naradji Maharaj’s mother died. When a child’s mother dies, he becomes very sad, but Naradji did not become sad, rather he viewed this as God’s auspicious ordinance. Naradji was inclined towards God, and mother was a hindrance in his devotion and worship of God. Therefore when the mother died, that hindrance in the pursuit of prayer and worship of the Lord was removed. Thus Naradji was pleased. The point is that situations and circumstances do not make a man unhappy. It is out of foolishness that he becomes unhappy. All can rise above pleasure and pain. In this there is no doubt.

There are two things that happen out of foolishness and ignorance. One - others are giving us pain (sorrow) - “paro dadaateeti” and pleasure (happiness) is due to my own efforts - “aham karomeeti”. If there is pleasure (happiness) due to our own efforts, then no one would be unhappy. He who gives sorrow to others can never be happy - this is a principle.

Questioner - If some person gets on someone’s case to cause displeasure and sorrow, then isn’t he the cause of the sorrow or not?

Swamiji - He has taken entry into stupidity. The pain that was to come, that alone will come. He who has gone after someone to give them sorrow, will incur many sins and he will have to suffer enormously. But he who gets pain and sorrow, it is due to his past sinful acts (praarabdh). When the Almighty Lord, the eternal well-wisher is alive and present, can anyone give pain and suffering? Previously too I had shared this point that on the outskirts of a town, in a forest, an ascetic was sitting, immersed in remembrance of the Lord. A few thieves were running with stolen money and the police were after them. Realizing that they were being followed

and would be beaten if caught, they left the money with the ascetic and went into hiding. Seeing the money with the ascetic (Babaji), the police began to beat him. Babaji said - “Baddhu tu jaane che” “O’ Lord, you know everything” It means that to my knowledge I have not given pain and sorrow to anyone and still I am receiving a beating, then I don’t know what action is this the fruit off? O’ Lord ! You only know, I do not know about this. Even though he was getting a beating without having caused any harm to anyone, then too he did not blame anyone. That is, the one getting a beating, has to have the fortitude. Someone else cannot give us pain and sorrow, we are experiencing pain and suffering due to our own stupidity (ignorance). I am sharing one more point, the giver of pain and

displeasure, he cannot give us sorrow, rather he will give us happiness! I have seen so. Someone tries to do the undesirable to us, but instead it turns out to be desirable. This is my experience.

Questioner - Maharajji! pleasure and pain are only assumed, as such

they are not there !

Swamiji - Absolutely ! they are assumed, therefore it is wiped out, or else how will it go away? Real never ceases to be. If there is existence of pleasure and pain, then it can never go away. Therefore there is no pleasure and pain, it is only assumed.

The assumption has to be given up. (to be continued)

Way to be Free of Sorrow

||  Shri Hari ||

Way to be Free of Sorrow
(दुःख-नाशका उपाय)

continued......

I go as far as to say that circumstances do not have the time to give pleasure - pain ! Poor thing! the circumstances are engrossed in flowing, it does not even touch us, then how can it give us pleasure and pain? Therefore with “satsang,” (association with truth), with holy thoughts, with good feelings and sentiments, a man can be ever joyful, ever blissful; because circumstances cannot give one sorrow. You are grabbing hold of sorrow and

becoming unhappy. If we get favorable circumstances, we become happy, and when we get unfavorable circumstances, then we regard them as unpleasing, this is the mistake that we make. In reality, circumstances are going away. Just like day and night, these favorable and unfavorable circumstances will keep coming. Just as after day, comes night, and after night comes day. In the same way, after pleasure comes pain, and after pain comes pleasure and so on.

From book in Hindi “Nitya Yog ki Praapti” by Swami Ramsukhdasji.

Talks pertaining to one’s salvation are open to all. Human body is only for one’s salvation, not for sense enjoyment. “yahin tana kar phal bishaya na bhaayi.” (Manas 7/44/1). Pleasure and pain are of two kinds. When we have money, wealth, glories, son, grandson, house, etc and such favorable things, then seeing these, people say that he is very

happy. If we don’t have these things ; if we do not have food to eat, clothes to wear, a house to stay, if such is our state, then seeing this, people say that he is very unhappy. In this manner, the name of various pleasure giving things is called happiness, and the name of various pain giving things is called unhappiness. And the feeling of joy in one’s heart is called happiness and the feeling of envy in the heart is called unhappiness. In this the pleasure and pain resulting from objects is circumstantial, and the pleasure and pain of the heart is out of foolishness. It is man’s main responsibility to get rid of this foolishness. Just as when you do not know a language, then to get rid of that ignorance, we can learn the language, in the same way, pleasure and pain are not in us at all - this art can be

learned by every man. It is for this knowledge that human body has been attained. Therefore on being born as a human, one must not become pleased and displeased, rather we are to rise above both pleasure and pain. What does it mean to rise above pleasure and pain? Where no pleasure can reach, nor pain can reach. A verse has come in the Patanjali Yoga Darshan of Vyas -

Pragyaapraasaadmaaruhayaashochyah sochato janaan |

bhoomishthaaniva shailstah sarvaanpraagyonupashyati || (1/47 ka)

In other words, just a when a man who stands on top of a mountain sees the men in the plains below, similarly, a man standing in the palace, sees both the suffering and not suffering.

In deep trance (samadhi) state, the Yogi’s intellect is able to grasp the Truth - “Rutambharaa tatra pragyaa” (Yogadarshan 1/48). Through discrimination thought one can gain such an intellect. Just as sometimes there is a flood, sometimes there is fire, sometimes favorable circumstances, sometimes unfavorable circumstances and various different circumstances, but when one is standing on top of a hill, no circumstance reaches that man. He is only observing the pleasure and pain, but not becoming happy and sad. This is called rising above the pleasure and pain and you and

me, and all of us we can be in this state.
