How to Renounce Desires? ..........(continued)
The world's sorrow will come to an end on becoming happy in others happiness and grieving on seeing others suffer. Your grief will come to an end instantly. In reality, grief is due to desiring something or the other. All that we have, belongs to others. Therefore regarding it as belonging to others, use it for serving them. If you regard it as yours and then serve, then you will experience grief. The reason is "Ek guna daan, sahastra gunaa punya" - If relationship with one thing is severed, then relationship will thousands will form. These things will not last; but on accepting a relationship with them, one experiences grief when these things are not there. Therefore engaging them in service, utilize them to serve and consider yourself to be gratified. These things were only entrusted to you, the owner has come and taken his things. What great joy!
This is an incident in Bijanour. There was a wealthy man from the Vashya "jaati". His name was "Kanaihya". People used to call him "Bhagatji". He had very good feelings and sentiments. One time, some robbers broke in and pointed a gun at him. He asked them with great ease - What is it that you want? Do you wish to take my life or do you wish to take my honor? Or do you wish to take my money? They replied, that we want money. He asked – how much? They replied "thirty thousand". Kanaihya Bhagat said - "Here take the keys to the treasure chest" The robbers, took the money and left. Now the next day, the collector came to know that thieves had robbed the place, so he called Kanaihya bhagat and asked him –"Did you get robbed last night? He replied – "No ! No robbery took place at our house. Thakurji (God) had come, it was His money. He needed it, therefore he took it. If he were to cry saying - I was robbed, then, would the money come back? If God took away His things, then the debt is wiped out. It can be stolen, robbed, lost, destroyed then from the heart make an offering of it to the Lord and become joyful. "Shri Krishna Arpanamastu" (I surrender to Shri Krishna), you will attain the virtues of surrendering. This is a simple point for ones salvation.
The years that have gone by so far, surrender these years also to God. If wealth has left you, strength-intellect has gone away, then surrender all of these things to God. That which is there right now, offer that too to God. Surrender your own self also to God, saying O' Lord! I too am only yours.
There is a story of a hunter. It was his livelihood to kill animals and to eat them. It was Shivaratri day, and he got nothing to eat, and had to remain hungry. Wandering around at night, he reached a Shivji temple. There was a tiny umbrella made of silver that was hanging over the "shivaling". He thought of taking that umbrella. Due to the umbrella being somewhat high, his hand could not reach it. He had no other solution. He climbed on top of the "shivaling" wearing his shoes to reach it. As he began to cut off the umbrella, Lord Shankar appeared and said - "People offer thorn apple "dhatura", they offer "bilvapatra", others offer "aank" flowers, but this man, climbed and offered himself. By this, Lord Shankar, became very pleased. He accepted this as an act of worship and surrender to the Lord. We too must want that totally, along with shoes, completely take refuge in the Lord. In reality, nothing is ours. You falsely have pride. O' Lord! Whatever is there, it is all yours." In this manner the moment you surrender, "me and mine" will be wiped away.
