The Nature of 'Bhajan'
(Devotion and Worship)
continued.....
Now some clarification on “bhajan” (devotion and Love of God) as four types of “Sharanagati” (refuge in God).
The first type of sharanagati (refuge in God) is to chant his eternal holy name, constantly-uninterruptedly with a disinterested spirit, while thinking about the Lord’s form, doing japa with utmost faith, listening and telling, ruminating, contemplating on the qualities, radiance, and divine plays etc. of the Lord. And while walking-sitting, sleeping-waking, eating-drinking at all times let there be remembrance of God.
The second type is ‒ To abide in God’s command, to obey Him. In this, one has to only pay attention to one point that may we not come under the sway of the mind, senses, and body and do only what is favorable to them; rather one must think that what is God’s ordinance - and only think about that, and continue to do His work. What is God’s ordinance? And how can I know that? The answer to that is - Srimad Bhagavadgita, that has come from the Lord’s own mouth, is present and available. Secondly, the words of those great souls who have attained God Realization and who are abiding in the Lord’s command are also there; because where no selfishness and egoism remains in the inner faculties (mind, intellect etc), there arises inner ignition, inspiration and effort to continue to do only that which is God’s command.
