Uninterrupted Spiritual Practice
(Akhand Saadhan)
continued......
To play according to the assigned role, there is an actor’s script. Through this script (play-write) one can learn that these lines are to be said by one person and these other lines are to be said by the other actors and players. In the same way, in our books it is written that a householder has to do the following; men should do these duties, women should perform
these other duties, son should do the following etc. And this is all role playing, only for the happiness of all the family members. All say that “householder life is very useful. Waah! Waah! Waah! Great!” In this way one has to do things properly, but not with the sentiments of getting praise, “Waah Waah”. Only for removing our attachment and infatuation. We have to play according to our role, to abide in the instructions of the Lord, but we are not to regard these roles as real. The name for this is karmayog.
If it is done in this manner, then automatically the attachment will go away and on its own the desire and passion (raag) will go away. Therefore it is said ‒‘Dharma te birati’ By
practicing Dharma (duty, righteousness), detachment most certainly takes place. If sense objects are enjoyed with passion, leaving aside duty, then one can never achieve detachment. It is impossible. Therefore let the aim be one of detachment, and be regulated in this detachment. Do the work as best as you possibly can as per the role, but you have to believe that it is only an act (a role). If there is something lacking in your performance of the role, then it is problematic, and regarding the role as real is also problematic. Therefore, let there be nothing lacking in fulfilling the role, and do not regard it as real. What will happen with this? Just as by dressing in the actor’s costume the money that is earned, that money too will go with you, and money earned without the actor’s costume will also go with you. Both cases, the money will come to you. In the same way, sitting in solitude if you do meditation and prayer and worship of the Lord, then this is not in the actor’s role, now you are worshipping your very own Lord, and acting in the householder role doing household chores, then this is playing the assigned role in this worldly life. But the purpose of both is “Bhajan” (worship, devotion and remembrance of God). By doing so, one will get admitted to the Lord’s abode and the “bhajan” will become constant and uninterrupted. If “bhajan”,
meditation, repeated chanting of the Lord’s name- association with holy company takes place over there as the lord’s “bhajan” and relating with the world-trading is our work to be done over here, then this will not be uninterrupted spiritual practice. Let all work be God’s work.
Tadarth karma kaunteya ..............॥
(Gita 3 / 1 )
Madarthamapi karmaani kurvan siddhimavaapasyasi ॥
We are doing work for God, it is the Lord’s work only that we are doing, then “bhajan” will take place from all directions, and the moment the work comes to an end, the mind will get engaged in God. Just as one trades for money, then the moment the shop closes,
immediately the thoughts go towards the money, one thinks about the money, about counting it etc. The shop closes, the market is closed, then too the lights are kept on. What are they doing ? Counting the notes and arranging them. Now why are they counting the notes? Then they say - what was the purpose of trading? The purpose for which this business is carrying one, is where the natural tendencies are engaged. In the same way, for what purpose is the work of a householder done? For God Realization. Then wherever the work comes to an end, the mind will become engaged in God. Immediately this will happen. The moment you begin your business and trade, then the attention will be on how to earn money, whether the money is remembered or not, but the work is for money.
Therefore there is uninterrupted recollection of money, the aim of money will remain constant. In the same way, if Bhajan and meditation is for the Lord only, and if all the work in the householder life is for the Lord, then in all work there will be constant, uninterrupted spiritual practice. He who grabs hold of this uninterrupted and constant, is a “sadhak” (spiritual aspirant). To maintain
constancy is “saadhan” (spiritual practice), and through that the unlimited that is attained is ”saadhya” (the goal, God). Then on its own all this will take place.
