Ways to Root Out Vices

||  Shree Hari   ||

(Avaguna Mitnaaneka Upaaya)

It is only when the desire and craving to gain pleasure from others is rooted out, that natural joy will manifest, and on attaining that natural joy, the mind becomes steady.   Goswamiji Maharaj says -
Nij sukh binu mana hoyi ki theeraa |  (Manasa 7/90/4)

As long as one does not attain that innate joy, till then the mind does not become steady.    When  innate joy is  attained – then that joy will be found within one's self, thereafter the mind will not go anywhere else at all.   The sense will also automatically on their own come under his control, they will become steady.

These vices and defects are boosted by
1)   By regarding the defects and imperfections to be in us.                                                  2)  Also by seeing flaws and defects in others and
 3)  Thirdly by lack of concern for other's suffering and sorrow.
Now pay attention,  by lack of concern for other's sorrows,  the flaws and defects become established in us and sustainable.    At all times we must be alert, that no one undergoes any suffering due to our actions.  Whatever actions I perform,   let there be no harm done to anyone.    In Gita,  the Lord says -

Labhante brahmanirvaanamrushayah ksheenkalmashaah |
Chinnadvaidhaa yataatmaanah sarvabhootahite rataah ||
Gita 5/25)

"Those who are engaged in promoting the welfare of all beings, attain Brahma." (Gita 5:25).
God also declares,
"Te praapnuvanti  maameva sarvabhootahite rataah||  (Gita 12/4)
"Those who are engaged in the welfare of all beings, come to Me." (Gita 12:4).

A devotee of God, whether he wishes to attain God with attributes (Saguna) or God without attributes (Nirguna), should be deeply absorbed in the welfare of all beings. In the Gita, the person who is engaged in the welfare of others has been called the Supreme Yogi. God has declared in the Gita
Aatmoupamyena sarvatram samam paschyati yorjuna |
Sukham va yadi dukham sa yogi paramo matah ||  (Gita 6/32)

O' Arjuna !  That yogi is regarded as supreme, who looks on all as one, like his own body and who sees the pleasure and pain of all with a same eye.  (Gita 6/32)

Causing distress to others, seeing defects in others, and following the path
disapproved by the scriptures and saints, are not easy to root out. However, this can be possible only by continuous spiritual practices and constant good company. Avoid the path disapproved by the saints and scriptures. Just as we do not wish anyone to do wrong to us, to steal our things, to find faults in us or to behave badly with us; likewise, we should not behave in an undesirable manner with others.
