Selfless Service - An Easy Discipline for Realization (Karmayog)
(Kalyaan ka Sugam Saadhan - Karmayog)
Shree Hari
Karmayog is so extra-ordinary, that whatever path (jnanayog or bhaktiyog) an aspirant follows, he will have to accept the method (there is nothing one has to do for one's self) of karmayog; because everyone has the power to do. God has said pertaining to jnanayog - "Sarvabhootahiterataah" (Gita 5/25; 12/4) and for Bhaktiyog He says " adveshtaa sarvabhootaanaam maitrah karuna eva cha" (Gita 12/13); by saying these two, he has said for both these, it is imperative to do for the welfare of others.
In karmayog, the doer is selfless, not the actions; because due to inertness, the action itself cannot be with or without a motive. Selfless actions takes place from a doer who is doing without a selfish motive. Therefore, whether you call it karmayog, or selfless service - the meaning of both is one and the same. There is no karmayog that is with a selfish motive. Therefore the sentiments of a doer must always remains free of any selfish motive.
Karmayogi cannot bare anything that is disadvantageous to anyone. As every part of the body has an indivisible relationship with whole body, similarly every part of this world has an indivisible relationship with the whole world. Just as a man becomes happy and sad with the pleasure and suffering of every part of his body, similarly, a karmayogi sees his own happiness and suffering in the pleasures and suffering of all beings. If the tongue is bitten by the teeth, no one has wanted to break their teeth. In the same way, karmayog does not believe in doing anything detrimental to harm, the world (so called body of ours).
Man has with him (the body, senses, mind, intellect, abilities, time, knowledge, money, land etc.). All the things that he has, is all-in-all obtained from the world; it is not personally belonging to him. It is evident, that we cannot exert any rights over all the things that we have acquired. We can neither keep these things according to our wishes, nor can we cause a change in them. We have neither brought these with us, nor will we take it back with us. In reality, these things have been received for using them (for engaging them in service of others) properly, never for exerting our rights over them.
God calls those individuals who enjoy the acquired things for their own pleasures, without putting these in the service of others, as thieves. - "Tairdattanpradaayaibhyo yo bhdankte stena eva sah." (Gita 3/12). Not just that, God calls such individuals as sinners, whose lives are not worth living. "Adhaayurindriyaaraamo modham paarth sa jeevati" (Gita 3/16).
With the body obtained from the world, so far we have only done things for ourselves, for our pleasures and enjoyment and for hoarding. Therefore we are indebted to the world. To reduce our liability to this world, we must only do actions for the benefit of this world. On doing actions, desiring fruit, the old debts are not reduced, and new debts are further born. You will have to take a new birth to be freed from the debts. By doing actions for the welfare of others, old debts come to an end, and by performing actions without a selfish motive, new debts do not arise. With this perspective (to be freed from birth and death), it is very essential to adhere to karmayog (discipline of selfless service)
