God has bestowed man with three powers - power of doing, power of knowing and power of believing (accepting). Man does not have the power of attaining, therefore not one thing in this world is obtainable by man. It cannot be attained whatsoever. This world, does not remain still for a single moment, rather every moment it is changing. Then how can it be obtained (praapt) ? If this world were in fact obtained, then, it would never part from us and we too would become gratified once and for all. But no one is ever satiated in the world. Rather the thirst only continues to increase - "jimi pratilaabh lobh adhikaayi". Man mistakes the exhaustion resulting from sense pleasures, as gratification; just as while eating food, when man runs out of capacity to eat anymore, i.e. when he becomes tired (powerless), then he calls this state as gratification. But in actuality, this is not gratification, therefore he once again becomes hungry.
Attainment is only of God, which takes place once and is forever. Really speaking God is ever attained. The only thing that happens is delusion of not-attainment is wiped out.
By properly utilizing the power of "doing" and "knowing", man dis-unites with the body and the world, and he attains "self-realization". However, with the proper utilization of the power of "belief" (acceptance), he dis-unites with the world, realizes his true nature and along with it he also attains the love of God. The purport is that man has to perform by his own efforts the spiritual practices belonging to this world "laukik" (i.e. karmayog and jnanayog), whereas by having faith in God, the work that aspirants should do, that work (liberation) is also done by God and the work that God has to do, that work (beholding Him and Love) is also accomplished by God.* (Gita10/10-11)
Let us say that a person is locked up in his house, in the city. Let us say that all the houses in that city are enclosed in the city's four walls. It is in the hands of the individual to get out of his house if he so wishes. However, it is not in the person's hands to get out of the city gates, rather it is under the control of the king of that place. If the king so wishes, then he can open the gates of the city and he can also open the doors to the person's house. If the person's door does not open, he can also break it down. Similarly God, does all the work of his devotees. He does the work that is suitable for the devotee, as well as, He does the work that is suitable for Himself! The purport is that through discrimination and thought / reflection only the spiritual practices of this world can be accomplished, but through faith and belief both the spiritual practices of this world, as well as, the transcendental spiritual practices, can be accomplished. Therefore, the power of belief (faith) is greater and more extra-ordinary than power of doing and power of knowing.
