Need To Improve One's Nature

Need To Improve One's Nature
[Swabhaav-Sudhaar Ki Aavashyakataa]

Shree Hari

So many different points come to mind that if one pays attention to even one such point, then there can be tremendous benefits.  There are several such points.  Of these I am sharing with you one such point that helps in God-Realisation. In the past, man has given importance to adoration, constant remembrance of the Lord, divine name repetition, chanting His holy Name, keeping company of spiritual and holy men, study of the scriptures,  following religious rites and observation and various disciplines  etc.  There is tremendous power of having a relationship with God.  It is so powerful that there is nothing else that is as powerful. This is the absolute truth.    However, despite these virtuous actions, we do not benefit as much as we should.  We remain unsuccessful in reaching our goal. The reason is that man does not pay attention towards improving his nature. He behaves the same as before, as per his nature.  Then what can he accomplish?  The adoration, worship and remembrance of God will not be in vain, but it will not take him very far.  His present life will not be pure, free of flaws and he will not radiate.

The two obstacles to improvement in our nature are our obsession with accumulation of wealth and gratification of our sensual pleasures. These two are the worst of flaws that come, due to which the nature is distorted.   This is harmful to us and to others.   Therefore, if you want spiritual progress, then improve your nature.   And this improvement in nature,  is such a high ranking thing, that they regard God as devout and not an atheist.   But those that have improved their nature,  are regarded as either devout or atheist, both.
Whatever sect or community a man is from,  if his nature is improved, he will become likable to others.  All will be influenced by him.   If his nature is spoilt,  he will not be likable by the people of his own sect , then what respect will people of other sects give him?  It is extremely essential to improve our nature.  The Lord has gone so far as to say that the divine traits are for liberation and demoniac traits are for binding.   The Lord has declared in the Gita—

"Daivi sampadvimokshaay nibandhaayaasuri mataa" (16/5).
"The divine nature is deemed for liberation and the demoniacal for bondage."
Selfishness and enjoyment of sensual pleasures this itself is demoniacal traits. The demons are not those creatures with horns but those who commit sins out of selfishness and sensual pleasures. God in the eleventh and the twelfth couplets of the ninth chapter of the Gita declares that those who have demoniac traits do not worship Him, but disregard Him, they sensor Him.  (Gita 9/11-12).   People with devilish traits are those who harm and destroy others for their own selfishness and pleasures.   The people with the traits of charming and deceiving others are the deluded ones who harm others and destroy them without any reason.
In present times many possess demoniac traits. Anger is transitory, delusion is overcome by good company, but selfishness always remains.  Wanting worldly pleasures, rest-relaxation and favorable circumstances for one's body, is a demoniac trait, that remains all the time.  (to be continued)
