Selfless Service - An Easy Discipline for Realization

Selfless Service - An Easy Discipline for Realization
(Kalyaan ka Sugam Saadhan - Karmayog)

Shree Hari
"Karma" (act of doing) has a relationship with the world (inert), and "yog" (union) has a relationship with the Self (conscious element). Therefore actions (karma), are for the world, and "yog" is for our self. In Karmayog (Discipline of Action), it is essential to altogether renounce the sense of mine (mamta), desires (kaamana) and infatuation (aasakti) towards actions, the instruments for performing actions and the fruit of actions . On renouncing desires and fascination for actions, and only doing actions for the benefit of the world, the relationship with the world will be severed and God Realization will take place. Therefore God says that any other action (i.e. any actions performed for one's self), besides right actions (i.e. only those actions that are performed for the welfare of others), are all binding -

Yagyaarthaatkarmanyatra lokoyam karmabandhanah (Gita 3/9)

The relationship of action is with "par" (that which is external to one's self), not with the "swa" self. By doing work for one's self, man gets bound. In other words, he develops a relationship with the world; because no actions take place by the "self." All actions take place in nature. On establishing a relationship with nature, the actions taking place in nature, are alleged and assumed to be taking place in one's self.

In reality, not even for a single moment can any man, in any state (waking, dream, sleep, deep sleep, even trance), stay without performing actions. Coming under the influence of the modes of nature, all men become bound by actions. Therefore, it is in man's nature to feel pressured to act. That pressure is not quietened by stubbornly renouncing actions by the self, or for one's self. To do things for the welfare of others without a motive, the strong urge to want to constantly do something, is quietened. It is only by doing things without a motive that this wanting to do "veg" is stilled. "aarurukshormuneryogam karma kaaranamuchyate" (Gita 6/3). In other words, the contemplative soul, who desires to attain to the height of Karmayoga (in the form of equanimity), action without motive, is said to be the means. For the same person when he masters Yoga, serenity (tranquility of mind) is said to be the means, to God realization. From this perspective, the practice of karmayog is easy and it essential for all, to attain Realization.

Human body is for performing one's duty (karmayoni). Actions are performed in the human body and its fruits are enjoyed or suffered in various other forms of birth. Therefore, there is a predominance of intellect in the human body. The proper use of the intellect is to attain one's salvation and to give happiness to others, and to serve them. To enjoy pleasures, to hoard, and become pleased on attaining favorable situation and displeased on attaining unfavorable is the improper use of the intellect. Only this human body is for fulfilling one's duty. Enjoyment of pleasures or to become happy-sad on attaining favorable and unfavorable takes place in animals, birds and other forms of births, where there is no question of fulfilling one's duty. Performing such actions, whereby only the world's welfare is sought is itself karmayog. (to be continued)

Selfless Service - An Easy Discipline for Realization (Karmayog)

Selfless Service - An Easy Discipline for Realization (Karmayog)
(Kalyaan ka Sugam Saadhan - Karmayog)

Shree Hari

Man is naturally inclined and interested in action. The reason is that he wants to acquire something or the other. Therefore with the aim of acquiring something or the other, he continues to be engaged in actions (work) with attachment, from birth to last moment of death . With the hope of acquiring something, his attachment to action is so much, that in old age when his senses are incapable of doing things, then too he is unable to become detached from actions. Thus, performing actions with attachment, he falls into the hands of death. In such a situation, instead of stubbornly renouncing actions, a means to success can be, that while performing actions prescribed by the scriptures, the attachment to actions goes away and man attains realization. From this perspective, the act of karmayog is itself a success and an easy method. Karmayog is such, as if the medicine is blended into one's meal! It is God's words in Srimad Bhagwat that -

He who desires his salvation, for him I have provided three paths (Yogs) - Jnanayog (path of knowledge), karmayog (path of selfless action), and bhaktiyog (path of devotion). Apart from these three, there is no other means to salvation. He who is extremely detached, he is entitled to the path of jnanayog (path of knowledge), he who is attached to the world, he is entitled to the path of karmayog (path of selfless service) and he who is neither very detached nor very attached, he is entitled to the path of bhaktiyog (path of devotion).

In this world the maximum number of entitled people, fall in the category of karmayog. Here a doubt may arise that, how can they those men that are attached to the world be able to go towards God, following the path of karmayog? The answer to this has been clarified by God in the phrase "nrunaam shreyo vidhitsayaa". It means that even on relishing sense enjoyments and having an inclination for hoarding, those men who want to put aside their interest in sense enjoyment and want to attain salvation, they by abiding in karmayog, can easily attain their salvation. The more firm and determinate their thoughts are towards salvation, that much quickly they can attain salvation.

The meaning of karmayog is - while doing your duty, attaining God Realization. In karmayog there are two words - karma (actions) and yoga (union). That duty which is done in ordinance with the scriptures is called "karma". The actions that are performed can be done for the world (to acquire fruit) or to rise above the world, to realize God (Paramatma). God has given two kinds of talks pertaining to yog 1) equanimity (samtaa)- "samatvam yog ucchyate" (Gita 8/48) and 2) dukha sanyogviyogam yogasyatam" (Gita 6/23). God is equanimity. "Nirdosh hi samam brahma" (Gita 5/19). Therefore through equanimity one can remain established in God. This is called "yog". The relationship with the world is the cause of connection with sorrow. Therefore on severing relationship with the world, one attains "yog" union, (equanimity, God). In karmayog, the importance is of yog, not of "karma". Therefore Lord says that in action, it is union that is the artfulness - "Yogah karmasu koushalam" (Gita 2/50). (to be continued)

The Key Point....(Saar Baat)

The Key Point
(Saar Baat)

Shree Hari
Brothers have accepted that "I am a man", thereafter they do not have to remember it. In the same way, an ascetic does not have to remember that "I am a sadhu" He does not have to rotate the holy beads to remember that. Once you have accepted then you have done so once and for all. After marriage, an individual does not have to think whether he is married or not. In the same manner, you ponder seriously that this world is going away every single moment. It simply cannot stay forever, in that same form as it is right now.

The second point is, that world which is "Not", is perceived only through "Is". Just as a person is sitting and in front of him 20-25 people pass by. On being asked he says, about 20-25 people have passed this way. If that person himself went away with them, then who would give that news about how many people have gone from there? But that person did not go away, he stayed right there, therefore he was able to relay the information about those that had gone by. Without staying behind, who would have given the news about those who went away? In the same way, Paramatma (God) is here to stay, and the world is passing by. If you accept this point that the world is going away, then your state will always remain in that eternal Paramatma (God, Supreme Consciousness), you will not need to do anything to remain in that state. The moment you believe that the world is here to stay, then you forget Paramatma (God). By accepting the world as departing every single moment, even on not remembering God, you will remain situated in God only.

The world is leaving – this is a very good and priceless point, it is a principle point. It is a point that comes in the Vedas and in Vedanta, it is a point that is addressed by many great souls. Paramatma (God) is the kind that will stay and the world is the kind that will go away. That Paramatma (God) is in the form of "IS-ness" (Hai). He is perfectly and completely everywhere. The four yugs - satya, treta, dwaapar and kali they continue to change, but God never changes. He remains always AS-IS. There are only two main points – the world is not and God is. The world is going away and God is here to stay. If you accept these points, then consider that a very big task has been complete, your life has become a success. Then attaining Self-Realization, God Realization, liberation, etc., will all take place through this point only.

The world is constantly going, as you keep seeing this, there will come a state that the world will become non-existent. Only that one Paramatma alone is there and the world is not there - you will experience this. Saints have said - "Yeh nahin yeh nahin, yeh nahi hoyi, take pare agam hai soyi." This itself is the essence. Fix this in your heart. It is everyone's experience that where are all the states, circumstances, incidents, actions, objects, companions etc., of the past gone? Just as they have gone, similarly even the current state, situation, object etc., will go away. They are constantly going away. It has been customary for the world to follow the pattern of departing

Some are gone today, some tomorrow
Some are standing and getting ready to go ........

From the very beginning, it is customary that this world will not stand still even for a moment. It is every one's experience. You do not respect this experience, this is the main mistake. It is due to this mistake that you are time and again born and die etc. Therefore today itself accept with a firm conviction that the world is leaving every moment. This is the main point.

The Key Point....(Saar Baat)

The Key Point
(Saar Baat)

Shree Hari

I will share with you the quintessence of all that I have heard, read and understood so far. This fundamental point is not any thing new. All have experienced and encountered it. It is man's nature that he always wants something new. In reality, a new thing is only that which remains forever. You must pay some more attention with regards to that point. It is a very beneficial thing, and it is a simple straight-forward thing. Retain it. Accept it with a firm conviction, then at this very moment you will cross the ocean of sorrow and attain bliss. Even at this time if you are not feeling and experiencing it, then too you will surely be subjected to this in the future – this is undoubtedly true. Knowledge ripens at the opportune time, after spending time to acquire it. "vidyaa kaalem pachyate." Therefore accept that point today itself. Just as those who farm, they sow the seeds, and if someone asks, then they say the farming is done. Similarly I am saying that on accepting this point with a firm conviction then you will attain the eternally blissful state! Yes! And he who has a deep yearning, that one will realize the elemental entity "tattva" and if you have a lesser yearning then it will take longer to realize that "tattva".

This world, is constantly, every moment, going towards destruction - this is the gist, the main point. It appears like an ordinary point, but it is a very central point. It is the quintessence. This world that can be seen, heard, understood does not last even for a single moment, it is constantly going away. As many creatures that are living, they are all-in-all going towards death. The entire world is moving towards final destruction. Everything is getting destroyed. That which is seen today, becomes unseen tomorrow. That which we pay a visit to, becomes unreachable. That which exists, is entering into non-existence. This is the fundamental truth. And it is something that all have experienced. No one at all has any doubt or wariness in this regard. Now, That which is seen in the form of "IS" reality, it will be going towards "Not" (non-existence). Body, money, land, house, family, honor, greatness, fame, post, rights, abilities etc, everything is going towards "Not" in other words, it is going towards "non-existence". Listen to this very carefully, understand it, and accept it. It is the absolute truth. The main mistake is believing the world to be "Is" i.e. accepting it as being here to stay.

Recollection (smruti) is of two kinds. 1) through making effort like repeating divine name (Naam Japa) etc. and 2) through knowing. That which takes place by making an effort, does not remain constantly, at all times, but that which happens through knowing, remains all the time. If you know, then you simply know it once and for all. After knowing, then one never loses sight of it, never forgets it. The recollection that comes from doing and making an effort, is forgotten when the activity is not taking place, then there can be a mistake. The mistake made in the recollection that comes from knowing is of a different sort. Just as, an individual considers himself to be a Brahmin, then for the entire day, he does not remember even once that he is a Brahmin. However, though not recollecting, then too within he always and constantly knows that he is a Brahmin. Sometimes if someone asks, then he will say that he is a Brahmin. This remembrance can be said to be forgotten when the man considers himself to be a Vaisya, Kshatriya, or Harijan. In the same way, if you believe the things of the world to be real, then it is a mistake. Therefore thoroughly accept that this world is all the time moving towards destruction. Thereafter whether this is remembered or not, the thing that is accepted does not have to be remembered.

Good Fortune through Proper Use...(Sadupyog se Kalyaan)

Good Fortune through Proper Use

(Sadupyog se Kalyaan)

Shree Hari
continued.......
There is a saying among people that - "chal-balki kheti bhali belaa-pulko daan |" The moment it rains, immediately sow the seeds, then the work will get done. That which takes place at the very beginning (of the rains), will not take place later on. Similarly, there is great value in doing charity, upon meeting a good recipient. I have heard the following about Draupadi. Draupadi was a woman in her previous life. One winter day, she went to fill water from a river. A Brahmin demi-god, wearing a loin cloth was bathing in the river. At that time, the loin cloth, came loose and was carried away by the surge of the water. Outside many women were standing. Poor Brahmin was shivering in the cold. Draupadi, tore a piece of her sari and threw it towards the Brahmin, but that too flowed away. She tore a couple more pieces of the sari and hurled them to the Brahmin, but they too were swept away by the flow of the water. Then she tore another piece and tied a stone to it and threw that, which the Brahmin caught hold off. With that sari piece, he made a loin cloth and wearing it, came out of the river. That lady did not think that how can I tear off my sari. That one strip of sari, became so very long! When Draupadi was being dis-robed, and her sari was being pulled, at that time God said -

Aaratvaan ateetko, deevee cheer ki leer |

Mein na badhaayou Draupadi, Tu hi badhaayou cheer ||

Poor Brahmin was shivering in the river waters. To save his face from the shame of being without clothes, you tore your sari to give to him. "dussasan ki bhoojaa yakit bhayi, basan roop bhaye syaam." So there is great glory of giving charity at the right time, of putting things to proper use.

If you have less strength, if the situation and circumstances are not so good, then too you were not fearful, rather you thought that what should I do at such a time? Then some solution or the other will come about. Any person that will be much obliged through you, which will lead to your good fortune, your eternal good. Gentlemen! Glories are not of things, situations etc., but of their use. You can put to proper use favorable times and also unfavorable times. You can put to proper use fit body, as well as, an unfit body. Whether you possess a lot or have nothing at all - both those situations can be put to proper use. Therefore seeing your situation do not become afraid. If you put the circumstances to proper use, then God will be pleased.

Narayan ! Narayan !! Narayan !!!

Good Fortune through Proper Use...(Sadupyog se Kalyaan)

Good Fortune through Proper Use

(Sadupyog se Kalyaan)

Shree Hari

continued.......
There was a child carrying some heavy goods, he said in self-praise to his father "Wow! Look how much heavy things I can carry!" The father could easily carry the same things in one hand, whereas, the child was applying his total strength to lift the things, therefore the father says to the child "Wow!". In the same light, gentlemen ! whatever things, situations, etc. you have received, utilize those properly. You wish that if you had more money, if your situation and circumstances were better, if your body was healthy, then you would achieve that which was for your eternal good. But you say, what to do, we do not have the knowledge, the intellect, the abilities! The truth is that, no person has any expectations of you with regards to your knowledge, intellect and abilities. Even God does not have any expectation. Whatever you have, use that itself properly, then God will see to your eternal good. Gentlemen! Situations and circumstances are not the ones to lead you to your salvation, to your eternal good. What will lead to your welfare, is the knack of properly utilizing those situations. You think and understand this and make proper use of the situations and circumstances then with that you will attain salvation, you will be greatly benefited.

A story that I had read in childhood comes to mind. This was from a books called "Birbal Vinod" where there is a conversation taking place between the king Akbar and Birbal. One time the King asked that what is a good weapon by which we can gain victory? Birbal the wise Brahmin, answered in straight-forward Rajasthani language - "Osaan" (that particular moment) ! The king thought about testing Birbal. One day Birbal went with the king to the forest. The king's grace was on Birbal. Birbal used to cook his own meals and eat. He was once cooking his own "roti" (Indian bread) and eating it when the king arranged to have a drunken elephant run loose where Birbal was cooking. He wanted to test how Birbal would defend himself! Birbal saw the elephant coming. There was a dog lying on the side. Birbal gave a piece of bread to the dog. As the elephant came close, he lifted the dog by the leg and threw it on the elephant. The dog flew across hitting the elephant on the head. The elephant fled fearing what problems would come next! Now! has anyone heard of such a weapon for scaring off the elephant? This is the opportune time to scare the elephant and make him go away. Whatever opportune moment comes about, that itself becomes the weapon. Similarly, the moment that arrives, that itself is offering (charitable) and an asset. (to be continued)
