Uninterrupted Spiritual Practice
(Akhand Saadhan)

To play according to the assigned role,  there is an actor’s script.  Through this script (play-write) one can learn that these lines are to be said by one person and these other lines are to be said by the other actors and players.   In the same way,  in our books it is written that a householder has to do the following;  men should do these duties,  women should perform these other duties,  son should do the following etc.    And this is all role playing, only for the happiness of all the family members.   All say that “householder life is very useful.  Waah!  Waah!  Waah!  Great!”  In this way one has to do things properly, but not with the sentiments of getting praise,  “Waah Waah”.  Only for removing our attachment and infatuation.  We have to play according to our role, to abide in the  instructions of the Lord,  but we are not to regard these roles as real.  The name for this is karmayog.
If it is done in this manner, then automatically the attachment will go away and on its own the desire and passion (raag) will go away.    Therefore it is said ‒‘Dharma te birati’  By practicing Dharma (duty, righteousness),   detachment most certainly takes place.  If sense objects are enjoyed with passion, leaving aside duty, then one can never achieve detachment.   It is impossible.  Therefore let the aim be one of detachment,  and be regulated in this detachment.   Do the work as best as you possibly can as per the role,  but you have to believe that it is only an act (a role).   If there is something lacking in your performance of the role, then it is problematic, and regarding the role as real is also problematic.   Therefore,  let there be nothing lacking in fulfilling the role,  and do not regard it as real.   What will happen with this?   Just as by dressing in the actor’s costume the money that is earned, that  money too will go with you, and money earned without the actor’s costume will also go with you.  Both cases, the money will come to you.   In the same way,  sitting in solitude if you do meditation and prayer and worship of the Lord,  then this is not in the actor’s role,  now you are worshipping your very own Lord, and acting in the householder role doing household chores,  then this is playing the assigned role in this worldly life.  But the purpose of both is “Bhajan”  (worship, devotion and remembrance of God).   By doing so,  one will get admitted to the Lord’s abode and the “bhajan”  will become constant and uninterrupted.    If “bhajan”,  meditation,   repeated chanting of the Lord’s name- association with holy company takes place over there as the lord’s “bhajan” and relating with the world-trading is our work to be done over here,  then this will not be uninterrupted spiritual practice.    Let all work be God’s work.
Tadarth karma kaunteya ..............॥ (Gita 3 / 1 )
Madarthamapi karmaani kurvan siddhimavaapasyasi ॥
                                                       (Gita 12 / 10)
We are doing work for God,  it is the Lord’s work only that we are doing, then “bhajan”  will take place from all directions, and the moment the work comes to an end,  the mind will get engaged in God.   Just as one trades for money,  then the moment the shop closes,  immediately the thoughts go towards the money,  one thinks about the money,  about counting it etc.  The shop closes, the market is closed,  then too the lights are kept on.  What are they doing ?   Counting the notes and arranging them.  Now why are they counting the notes?   Then they say -  what was the purpose of trading?   The purpose for which this business is carrying one,  is where the natural tendencies are engaged.   In the same way,  for what purpose is the work of a householder done?   For God Realization.   Then wherever the work comes to an end,  the mind will become engaged in God.   Immediately this will happen.    The moment you begin your business and trade,  then the attention will be on how to earn money, whether the money is remembered or not,  but the work is for money.   Therefore there is uninterrupted recollection of money,  the aim of money will remain constant.   In the same way,  if Bhajan and meditation is for the Lord only,  and if all the work in the householder life is for the Lord,  then in all work there will be constant, uninterrupted spiritual practice.  He who grabs hold of this uninterrupted and constant,  is a “sadhak”  (spiritual aspirant).   To maintain constancy is “saadhan” (spiritual practice),  and through that the unlimited that is attained is ”saadhya” (the goal,  God).  Then on its own  all this will take place.
In this manner how  to understand ‘We are God’s’ and ‘how to do uninterrupted spiritual practice, uninterrupted worship and devotion of God (Akhand Bhajan) ‒ the answers to both these questions has been addressed !

An aspirant has one life.  He must split this life into two parts.   1)  The real (eternal, permanent) and 2)  the unreal (temporary, perishing).   He must believe that one is real and genuine and the other is false and unreal.
Just as a person in a masquerade, dresses himself knowing full well that this is not his real self, he knows that it is just a put on.  While the  “sense of mine” that takes place  on its own, is regarded as real, not false.  In this manner,  the body that we people have taken on, this is not our true self (nature).   It is only a masquerade, and we are the ones who are putting on this masquerade.  We have assumed a sense of I and mine-ness with it.  Therefore though being God’s, we have put on a masquerade of the world. Today the talks are topsy-turvy -  we are of the world and we masquerade about doing worship and devotion of God.   Thus those who put on the facade of doing prayers and worship (bhajan) of God, that “bhajan” will never become unwavering and uninterrupted (continuous).  It simply won’t.  Not at all.  Never ever.   How can something that is a farce, be continuous?   A masquerade is at the time of play,  afterwards it will not remain.   Therefore we have to modify it,  bring about a change in it that “I am God’s and God is mine”  Before this body too,  I was not a body and the body was not mine.   And after this too, the body will not remain as me and mine,  but the self will remain. Therefore accept this as belonging to God, then it is God’s.  If you do not accept it as God’s then it is yours on its own.
You were once a child, that same one has now become old.  Your body is not the same, the associations are not the same, the group is not the same,  the guise is not the same,  time is not the same, state is not the same,  year is also not the same, then too you say that I am the same one -  this is a very surprising thing!  It is everyone’s experience,  but no one pays attention to this.  These things are not me,  only I am I. I is constant,  because, the I that was there in childhood, is the same I, today.   If someone asks,  what specific things are the same as in childhood?    Intellect, thoughts, aim, direction none of these are the same, but  you are the same.    The body is not the same,  situations  and circumstances are not the same,  place is not the same,   the company you keep is not the same, things are not the same,  state is not the same,  your goal is not the same,  your knowledge and thoughts are not the same.   When all these have changed, then how do you have a relationship with them?
This is all a masquerade.   You are the knower of all these and separate from them.  The knower of all these, that is you,  and that you, belongs only to God.   All these are  the  things of the world.   The one who is in the masquerade,  gets his mask from the company,  all the costumes are made available from the company.   And the stage-pavilion also belongs to the company.  It is for the company’s act, on the company’s own stage, for their pleasure that the role is acted out.   The pleasure derived by the audience, is also  only for the pleasure of the  company’s boss.   If the audience is not pleased,  then no bonus is received from the boss.    In the same way,  the masquerade that you have put on,   according to the roles,  do the best of best work, but do it knowing full well that it is only an act.  This is called  exercising dharma (duty).     (to be continued)

Uninterrupted Spiritual Practice
(Akhand Saadhan)

continued......

Even after associating with holy company (satsang)-devotion and worship of God (bhajan) for many years uninterrupted “bhajan” is not taking place.  There are many reasons for this, but of them, the main reason and the greatest of all is that you have not connected the sense of “I-ness”  with your spiritual practice.  On one hand, you are doing spiritual practices,  and thoughts of the world are going on.   That which is real will only be uninterrupted.  How can that which is false be uninterrupted?  If you fake it, it will go away, then what are we to do?   If you want to do uninterrupted spiritual practice,  then understand, or accept “I am God’s”  On establishing a relationship with God,  the commitment comes, and then what is there to do?  Only spiritual practices (saadhan) are to be done.   I had said that “Only spiritual practices are to be done”  it is not that “spiritual practices are also to be done.”    Our brothers and sisters are also doing spiritual practices.  Let us also do this,  let us put in 1-2 hours in this,  out of twelve months, let us devote 2-4 months in this.  Let us do this also,  and of course housework has to be done.   That housework is inevitable (definitive),  but this is “also”  (supplemental).  With this attitude,  in this way as long as you assume an affinity with the world,   till then,  only the relationship with the world will remain.
Think and you will see for yourself,  that the relationship with the world was not there and will not remain.    I have shared with you about  the relationship with the world from a gross perspective.  On a subtle level,  if it is seen,  then it is absolutely not there at all,  not even for a single moment.  Just as the water of Gangaji flows and does not remain steady even for a single moment, however when seen from a gross perspective,    then it is said that from tomorrow the waters will flow from this step.  As it was yesterday,  so it is today, it is flowing on the same step,  but from a subtle perspective,  not even for  a single moment is the water remaining at the place where it was yesterday.   At the next moment, if it were there in the same spot, then for ever it would remain steady there;  however it is not steady even for a single moment.  In the same way,  this body,  senses,  mind, intellect,  life breath do not remain steady for even a single moment.  Why is that -  क्षणपरिणामिनो भावा ऋते चितिशक्ते:
Besides the power of the conscious element, everything is by nature temporary, momentary.  You have assumed sense of mine with the momentary,  Due to that, you are unable to see your own sense of mine-ness.  Then how can you come to understand that “I am God’s and God is mine.”   Actually speaking,  only God is ours, no one else is ours.  If you go deeply into this,  no one is ours.  Oh!  the body too is not ours,  then how can anyone else be ours ? and only by having affinity with the body how did they become ours?
On this if we say -  now what to do?   sense of mine-ness appears to be tenaciously there, now how to remove it?   Then for this there is one very easy and very great method.  This can be done by any brothers-sisters, young-old, educated-uneducated,  each and every one can do it.   Now what is that  method?    (to be continued)

Uninterrupted Spiritual Practice

What else to say;   whoever you consider as a saint, a great soul, a detached person,  a renunciate,  a good person,   establishing a relationship with them is also in fact for the purpose of ending the relationship.   This point appears to be the bitter truth, but it is so.   Leaving householder life, one becomes a “sadhu”  and one establishes a relationship with the “Guruji”.   Surely you have not established a relationship with the “Guruji”  for keeps sake.  Guruji will tell you “Brother!  your eternal affinity is with the real “self”.   Your affinity with all these other things will not remain,  therefore sever relationship with everyone else.  The relationship with the Guruji has been established,  not for being with the Guruji until death.   We regard these assumed relationships as permanent,  that is the mistake.  It is due to having assumed affinity with the body,  that the mistake has been made.   Then what to do now?
It is on having the feelings that,  “I am the body”, that   “I am God’s,  God is mine,”   cannot be understood.   The reason for not understanding is due to unbreakable relationship with the body.   Jeev (embodied soul), is in fact a part of God, and God is the Jeev’s -  this is their true relationship.    Therefore those who are real saints and great souls, they have this as their only aim,  they share this only that “You are God’s and God is your. You are not this body.”
As long as there is a sense of “I-ness” with the body,  till then uninterrupted spiritual practice cannot take place.     The question was that “how to do uninterrupted spiritual practice”?   As long as you have a sense of I-ness and mine-ness with the body, till then uninterrupted spiritual practice cannot take place.  Pay attention,  what is uninterrupted?  And what is with interruptions?  The sense of I-ness that is present,  that is uninterrupted.   If you are ever asked, you answer will be “I am”.   Whether you remember it, or whether in deep sleep or in relating with the world, you completely forget,  but the point that I am of a particular “varna”,  in a particular stage of life,  this is remembered  without  trying to remember,  without memory of it, is retained and recalled.   You do not remember it at all, you have no awareness of it at all that what work am I engaged in,  but wherever you are even slightly aware, there the sentiments of “I am” are present.   Then that very same name, the same city, the same “varna”, the same stage of life, and our state, condition will all appear,  even in a dream.    Therefore, the relationship that is connected with  “I” is uninterrupted.   By not connecting the relationship of “I”with God, and instead continuing to connect it with the world and then you wish and hope to do uninterrupted “bhajan”  (devotion and worship of God),  this is impossible.    Whether you hear from this ear,  or you hear from that ear;  whether you believe or you don’t believe, whether you get proof or not,  Brothers,  I have no doubt whatsoever.  If you have doubt, then you don’t listen.   I have no insistence from you.   (to be continued)
