The Nature of 'Bhajan'
(Devotion and Worship)

It is with the illusory and enchantress power only that man experiences that on acquisition of money in its various forms through material possessions etc, he will become very happy. Such wishes and aspirations have been heard of since time immemorial; but till today we have not met such a worldly person, who has said that he is totally happy. Rather, you hear more people say that we are more unhappy than we were previously. It is said ‒
Ekasya Dukhasya na yaavadantam
gacchamyaham paaramivaarnavasya ।
Taavad davideeyam sampasthitam me
chidreshvanarthaa bahuleebhavanti ॥
chidreshvanarthaa bahuleebhavanti ॥
‘ Like that, there is no end to sorrow, until the crossing of the ocean, and then in the midst of it all, another sorrow creeps in; It is so, as where there is lack of something, there exists with certainty meaninglessness and futility. “
When one experiences that something is missing or lacking, then to fulfill that void one makes an effort, however, often the desired thing is not acquired.
Due to some good associations, if one does acquire the thing, then various new world of voids creep in, which were never previously even possible. Therefore Lord Krishna says -
ये हि संस्पर्शजा भोगा दुःखयोनय एव ते ।
आद्यन्तवन्तः कौन्तेय न तेषु रमते बुधः ॥
Ye hi samsparshajaa bhogaa duhkhayonaya eva te |
Aadyantavantah kounteya na teshu ramate budhah ||
(Gita 5/22)
'Oh Son of Kunti! The pleasure derived from the conjugation of the senses and the sensual objects are bound by a beginning and an end and are the real reason for all the miseries. Therefore, a wise man would not entertain such acts.'
After giving some thought to this, one comes to see that no creature in this world is completely happy and satisfied in his current situation; as he is constantly hankering and striving for even more happiness and pleasure.
