Vice-and-Virtue-01.jpg
The Flow of Spiritual Truths
continued.....

So far, no one has been able to keep any of the worldly objects related to this body.   There have been many great ascetics and they have received many great boons, but none have been able to keep their body.   No one is able to keep this body.   Then what benefit is there in this false attempt at trying to keep it with you?  To attempt to keep holding on to this body, wealth, property, house, family, etc.,   is like carrying darkness.  Can one lift and throw darkness outside?  And if somebody goes to look for the darkness with a lamp, then can he find it?   Similarly if you attempt to see and know the world then you will get nothing; because this unreal world has no independent existence of its own.   It is only due to the real, ever existent, Essence, Element ofParamatma, that the unreal appears as real.

An aspirant should not accept an association with both vice and virtue, then there will be no pride of goodness, and no sins will remain.  Self is free from vice and virtue.

Therefore it is said -

"Sunahun taat maaya krut guna aru dosh anek |
Guna yah ubhay na dekhiahin dekhia so abibek ||
"Gunadoshdarshidosho gunastoobhayavarjitah ||
 (Srimad Bhagavata  11/19/45)

"To have our eye on vice and virtue, i.e. to consider its affinity with us is the worst of all sins, and to not have our sight on these and instead to remain established in the immutable Self, is the one of the highest virtues."

If you see qualities in you, then, with certainty will come pride and sins along with it.  Because it is only due to flaws that one praises ones qualities and attributes.  Just as praising a wealthy person is due to those that are poor (without any wealth), not due to the wealthy. Just like greatness of a wise person is only due to the ignorant fools, not due to his wisdom;  the orator's greatness is only due to the listeners, not due to the speakers.   Due to small things being present, there is greatness of big things.   If small things did not exist then how will one see things as being big?

Worldly pleasures are like poisonous laddoos (sweets).  If man does not leave the laddoos,  then the poison will not leave man.    Man will have to give up the laddoos to be saved from being poisoned.   It cannot be that on eating the laddoos the poison does not spread.   If one comes to know that there is poison in the laddoos,  then no one will eat them, even though they taste sweet.   If someone eats them, then from this it is only proven that it is here say,  it is only heard that there the laddoos have poison in them,  he has not accepted or believed the laddoos to be poisonous.  It has been said  —

करनी बिन कथनी कथे, अज्ञानी दिन रात ।
कूकर ज्यों भूँकत फिरै, सुनी सुनायी बात ॥

The Flow of Spiritual Truths

A sure means of getting rid of sins is - not accepting the sins  in you, and not repeating the sinful acts.   It is only due to repeatedly making mistakes that sins continue to remain.  Virtue and vice both arise and perish, but we (Self) remain at all times.  Similarly this world is also perishing, whereas God is Eternal.  Therefore the Self and Paramatma (God, Supreme Consciousness) are One, whereas the world and the flaws/sins are one.  The point is that our relationship is withParamatma, not with sins and the world.   However, on turning away from Paramatma, we have assumed our relation with the world.  This is a mistake!   We ourselves have accepted a relationship with this world and this body; the body and this world have not assumed an affinity with us.   We only have become distant from Paramatma. Paramatma has not become distant from us.  Therefore the world and this body are not mine and I am not theirs; and Paramatma is mine and I am Paramatma's – Accept today itself!   This body is a part (element) of this world, and I am a part (element) of Paramatma.  Dedicate the body to the service of the world and dedicate the Self (swayam) to Paramatma - that is all an aspirant (sadhak) has to do.

On assuming this world as his own, man is trapped, and he undergoes many different kinds of suffering.  He thinks this body, wealth, property, house, family etc. are his, and he is their master.  But as such he becomes their slave.   The misconception of becoming a master, but as such he becomes their slave.  This is the absolute truth.   Man should want to serve those things and have no hope and expectation from them, have no sense of  mine (mamta) in them.  One must serve, even the body.  Give it food, water, etc., but do not consider it to be yours.  We cannot keep the body forever.  We cannot make the body according to our wishes.  We cannot make the changes to it that we want.  Then how is it ours?   Money, property, houses, etc. also we are unable to keep it as we wish.  Therefore "they are mine" is nothing short of false.

They have been received to serve, therefore, serve them with the spirit of selflessness.  They appear as ours, than it is God's generosity.  God gives in such a way that the receiver perceives the thing as his own.  This is the extra-ordinary generosity that though giving everything, He has kept Himself hidden.  To consider those things that are given to us as our very own is mis-utilization of God's generosity.  Therefore that which is not yours, do not consider as yours, and become inclined towards, that which in fact is your very own (Paramatma).  (to be continued)

Affinity with the Lord
continued.....

When a fisherman casts his net to catch fish,  all the fishes which come within the net are trapped.  But the fishes which are close to his feet, are not trapped.  Similarly,  beings attached to the world,  get entangled and follow a cycle of birth and death.  But those who take refuge in the Lord,  get over His deluding potency (Maya) (Gita 7/14).   There is an important difference between the attitude of the fisherman and the Lord.  The fisherman wants to trap the fish,  but the Lord wants beings to be liberated from illusion, by taking refuge in Him.  So he declares,  ‘Take refuge in Me,  alone.’  A person gets entangled in illusion,  by being attached to worldly pleasure.

As in a grinding mill, all the grains are ground but those which are near the rivet are not pulverized.  Similarly in the grinding-stone of the world,  people are crushed i.e. they suffer and follow a cycle of birth and death.  But those who take refuge in Him,  escape suffering and the cycle of birth and death.   However,  there is a difference between,  grain and devotees.  The grains remain near the rivet,  without making any effort,  while devotees themselves, by having a disinclination for the world,  take refuge at His feet.  It means,  that man (self), though being a fragment of the Lord,  accepts his affinity with the world,  and wants his desire to be fulfilled by it,  he therefore has to suffer by following the cycle of birth and death.

A man’s affinity with the world is assumed,  while with the Lord it is real.  Affinity with the world makes him a slave to the world,  while the affinity with the Lord,  makes him a Lord, even to the Lord.   If a person regards himself superior to others,  because of learning, riches, power and even renunciation and dispassion,  it means that he is a slave to them,  because in fact he is not superior,   but these possessions have made him feel superior.  So there is superiority of these possessions,  rather than his real self.   He is inferior to them.  But if a devotee takes refuge in the Lord,  and depends only on Him,  the Lord makes him a jewel of His crown,  or considers him His Lord.   But,  even then he has no superiority complex,  no pride of his virtues.  In that case,  the Lord’s uniqueness descend on him and sometimes even their bodies, senses,  mind and intellect become divine as their earthliness is completely gone.  Such devotees merge into God,  as Meerabai did.  Only a piece of her Saree was left in the Lord’s mouth.  Similarly, saint Tukaram (including his physical body) went to the abode of Lord Vishnu.

Affinity with the Lord

A devout devotee, who takes refuge in the Lord,  does not worry,  that he has not yet had a vision of the Lord,  he has not developed true devotion for Him and that his inclinations have not been purified and so on.  If he worries,  he is like a monkey’s young one,  who by holding its mother, shoulders the responsibility itself.

A devout devotee, like a kitten,  which totally depends upon its mother,  depends on the Lord,  without worrying whether He appears before him or not,  whether He bestows love upon him or not,  and whether He purifies his propensities or not.  A kitten folds its limbs and remains ready for its mother to carry it anywhere.   Similarly a devotee withdrawing himself from the world,  beholds the Lord by meditating upon Him,  reciting His name and performing such spiritual activities.   He remains fully satisfied and happy with whatever happens to him,  regarding it as the Lord’s,  sweet will.

A devotee is like clay,  which leaves itself to a potter’s will.  The potter mixes water in it,  kneads it,  crushes it,  pats it,  puts it on his wheel,  moulds it and makes pots,  such as pitcher, jar, and plates etc.  Similarly,  a devotee leaving himself at the Lord’s will,  becomes free from worry and fear etc.  Then the Lord’s grace showers on him incessantly.  The more free he is from worry and fears,  the more Divine grace is showered on him.   The more he is worried and prides in his capability,  the more impediments he puts in Divine grace.  The Lord’s uncommon,  unique,   incessant and continuous grace is showered on a devout devotee, who takes refuge in Him.

Special Grace of God in Miseries
continued....

There is a description in Gita that one who has control over his internal instrument (antahkaran),  such a person free from attachment and aversion by using sense-objects with senses attains placidity of mind and on attaining that placidity, all his sufferings come to an end and his intellect very quickly gets firmly established in God  (Gita 2/64-65).  He who remains happy in most unfavorable circumstances,  his intellect gets established in God very quickly.   The reason is that the happiness arising during the unfavorable situation is the mother of equanimity.  If such happiness (placidity) is attained,  then the person should think that he has attained the mother of equanimity and the grand-mother of God-realization.

There is a very special grace of God in the unfavourable circumstances but this does not mean that you should desire unfavourable situation.  We should not desire for favourable or unfavourable situations but we should remain pleased with the situation which God sends to us.   Our relationship stands with God,  not with any circumstance.  If God sends an unfavourable situation,  then we should understand that it is a great favor.   God has sent the unfavourable situation for removing our attachment to favourable circumstances.  In Valmiki-Ramayan,  Aranyakanda,  it has been said -

Sulabha purusha raajan satatam priyavaadinah |
Apriyasya cha pathyasya vakta shrota cha durlabh ||  (37/2)

‘O’  king, there are so many people who continuously go on speaking sweet words but there is dearth of speakers as wells as, listeners of unfavourable but useful words’.

There is a Marwari proverb -
‘sati deve santoshi pave;  jaaki vaasana teen lok mein jaave.’
If the giver of alms (food) is a chaste woman and he who receives it is contented,  the fragrance of such alms (food) spreads in the three worlds.’

Similarly if the giver is God and the receiver is His devotee i.e.,  if by making special favors;  He sends unfavourable situation and the devotee becomes joyful by accepting it,  then its effect shall be experienced by the entire world.

Amazing-Grace-400.jpg
Special Grace of God in Miseries

A man wants favourableness,  but does not want unfavourableness -  this is his cowardice.   The desire for favorable situations is the main bondage for a man.  Besides this there is no bondage.  In order to eliminate this desire (for favourableness), God lovingly sends unfavorable situations, for the devotee’s betterment.   In the unfavorable situations,  our attachment to the alien elements (this world) is broken away.   If unfavourableness comes in one’s life, then one should understand that it is a very special grace from God.  It is indescribable,  the amount of bliss,  peace and happiness that is there in unfavourableness.  These unfavorable circumstances are like God Realization.  God has said -

‘nityam cha samachittattvamisthopapattitshu’  (Gita 8/9).
‘Constant balance of mind both in favorable and unfavorable circumstances.’

To remain happy on arrival of unfavourable situations,  is the mother of equanimity.  Lord Vishnu became the greatest among all the deities because when He was kicked in His chest by Bhriguji,  He did not get angry.  He started pressing the legs (feet) of Bhriguji and spoke,  ‘Bhriguji,  my chest is very hard and your feet are very soft,  therefore your feet might be hurt on contact with my chest.’  We are part of God -

‘Mamaivaansho jeevaloke’  (Gita 15/7),
‘The Jivatma (soul) is an eternal portion of Myself.’

If we are portion of God,  and cannot heartily respect, He who kicks our chest,  then how are we the devotees of God ?  We should presume the arrival of unfavourable situation as a golden opportunity and we should dance with joy that God has showered his special grace on us.  I am hesitating to say that every man does not recognize such a golden opportunity.  If we tell someone,  that he does not recognize this golden opportunity,  then this gives disrespect to that person.   If we get such an opportunity and we recognize that God has showered His special grace on us, then this is something very beneficial.

Srimad Bhagavata on Granting Boon of Loving Devotion

God has not created man for His enjoyment, nor for engaging man in worldly pleasures, nor for ruling over Him.  Rather He has done this, so that man loves Him,  and He loves man,  and man calls Him his very own,  and God calls man His very own;  and man looks towards God,  and God looks towards man ! It means that God does not make man his servant “das” (dependent), rather He makes man like Himself, and respects man like Himself.   Therefore God hesitates to give His devotion, because in devotion,  man becomes God’s servant.  It has therefore come in Srimad Bhagavata  ‒

मुक्तिं ददाति कर्हिचित्स्म न भक्तियोगम् ।
                                       (श्रीमद्भा॰ ५ । ६ । १८)
Muktim dadaati karhichitsma na bhaktiyogam |
(Srimad Bhagavatam 5/6/18)

He bestows now and then (even) final beatitude on those who worship Him;  but He rarely (i.e. in very rare cases) grants the boon of loving devotion (to His feet).

In other words, at times, God gives liberation,  but He  rarely gives the yoga of devotion.
From "Bhagwan aur Unki Bhakti" in Hindi by Swami Ramsukhdasji
|| Shri Hari ||
Who is Mine ?
A man who is engaged in “satsang”  should first and the foremost think that who is mine and who is not mine?

Pay attention!  It is an exceptional point !  We should realize that he who always lives with us, and with whom we live at all times,  is ours.   But He Who cannot always live with us, and with whom we cannot always live,  is not ours.  Now why do we not recognize Him,Who is ours? and why are we attracted to that which is not ours?
We commit a mistake by regarding the wealth, property, sons, family, honor, praise, etc.  as ours.  Actually they are not ours because they don’t accompany us forever, they appear and disappear.  But we have a disinclination for God Who is ours,  Meerabai declared,  “None else except God is mine”.  We don’t attain God because unlike Meerabai we  don’t exclusively depend on God.  We should have an inclination to God because He is our own.  “He dwells in the hearts of all beings’  (Gita 18/61).

I have declared several times that God pervades everywhere, at all times, in all persons, incidents, circumstances, and states etc., so He is here now in us.  As He belongs to all, He is also ours.  So we need not lose heart as far as His attainment is concerned.  But our affinity for the people of this mortal world is only in order to render service to them.  If we are attached to them, we shall have to suffer because they can’t live with us forever.

Do not relish  the joy that you get from satsang (good company).  Have an inclination for God Who is the source of this joy.   God is the abode of that joy.  The body and the world are not ours.  If we are bold enough to accept this fact,  it will be very beneficial.

Ease in God Realization

Krishna-Arjun-20160112-01.jpg
continued......

The observer of the union and separation of objects, persons, states etc.,  is apart from them.   Therefore at least be attentive and observe the union and separation, while remaining detached and neutral.  Do not get entangled in them.

That ‘tattva’ is automatically realized by you.   What is the difficulty in its attainment ?   The difficulty is in the attainment of favorable situations,  in the attainment of desirable sense pleasures,  in the attainment of respect and honor,  in the attainment of flawless health (free of disease).   The difficulty is in the acquisition of things which are created and destroyed; because they don’t last,  therefore they will not be attained.   They are limited in quantity, therefore all cannot have them.   But “Paramatma-tattva’ is limitless;  belongs to everyone,  is ones very own.   For realization of that ‘tattva’,  become devoid of the things that come into being and later perish.   Become devoid of the waking,  dream and trance states.   Become devoid of all the objects, actions, incidents that take place in the waking state.   They are the kind to arise and perish,  we are not with them -  in this manner become silent,  become apart from them.    In a day, fifteen, twenty,  twenty-five times,  hundred-two-hundred times, even just for one or two seconds, experience yourself as the witness,  being separate from these, and then see.   If you are able to be a witness,  being separate for an entire minute,  then what more to say !  If on being silent,  there is upheaval in the heart,  then become apart from that as well.  This agitation and chaos within, is also the kind to go away,  to perish.   If various certainties and uncertainties arise,  then that too will perish.   Only be aware,  that these will perish (come to an end).   What is there to be happy and sad in the things that are going to perish ?   Neither are we to be pleased or displeased with the objects that we receive that later depart from us,  nor be pleased-displeased with the coming and going of resolves.  Even if the best of best resolves come, then we are not to be pleased even by them, and if the worst of worst resolves come, then do not be displeased even with them.   On not becoming pleased and displeased one becomes ‘gunateet’  (beyond the modes of nature)  and ‘tattva’  (God, Divinity) will be realized ‒

Nirdwandwo hi mahaabaaho sukham bandhaatpramuchyate  ॥
(Gita 5/3)

"He who does not have aversion towards anyone, nor wants anything from anyone,   can be eligible to be an eternal renunciate; because the man who is free from the pairs of opposites,  becomes freed from worldly bondage."   (Gita 5/3)

Favorable - unfavorable whatever come,  do not have likes-dislikes,  do not become pleased-displeased.   Whether you get honor  or dishonor,  whether someone respects or disrespects you,   whether favorable objects are received or unfavorable,  whether we meet favorable or unfavorable persons;   The only thing that has to be done is that do not become pleased and displeased in them.    If you become pleased and displeased then understand that this is a very big obstacle !   I have said many times,  that one should experience discomfort even in pleasure,  and in pain ! In favorable circumstances,  if one becomes pleased,  then one should feel discomfort,  that why have I become happy ?  And in unfavorable circumstances if one becomes displeased,  then one should feel discomfort, that why have I become unhappy ? We are trapped in the pairs of opposites !  It is our flaw that we have become pleased and displeased.   Simply accept this to be a mistake,  that this is not proper.   Can you do this or not ?   Tell me ?

Listener ‒  Maharajji !  This does not happen at all times.

Swamiji ‒ If it does not happen universally,   but happens partially,  then so be it.   There are some situations where it is not in our hands to remain in equanimity,  and there are some situations,  where we are able to remain so.    Therefore those situations where you find it easy to remain in equanimity,  abide in those,  then the outcome will be two-fold ‒ firstly the situations where you find it difficult to remain balanced in the pairs of opposites,  it will become easy to remain in equanimity;   and secondly,  the flaws that are unknown to you,  they will become known.   Therefore that which can be easily practiced,  do those things first.   Henceforth,  accept that those situations where it is easy to remain in equanimity (balanced),  I will remain so.

Ease in God Realization
Want-to-Realize-that-Tattva-400.jpg

Listener ‒ We all are listening to a lot of spiritual discourses,  we are even trying, then too the desire to seek pleasures from this world is not going away Maharajji !

Swamiji ‒ In this, your effort will not be of use,  the pain and suffering you experience will be of use.    One must feel pain,  burning anguish within to have a quest to know how to get rid of this attraction for the world that is so persistent ?   If the pain and suffering increases,  then that attraction will go away.   This does not go away with effort.   However much of effort you put in,  you will be doing so by taking the support of the world,  you will be taking the support of the mind-intellect-senses-body.   You will have to take the support of the insentient.  Then how can you rise above the insentient ?    But if you experience suffering,  burning,  vexation then this fire has such power,  that it can burn away the desire for worldly enjoyments and hoarding.     If you develop such perseverance,  that I want to realize that ‘tattva’ (Truth, God).  I don’t want to attain anything that is incomplete.   I don’t want partial happiness.   I want food and clothes just enough to sustain this body,  I don’t want to take any pleasures,  nor do I want any rest and relaxation.   On having such a thought,  the intense thirst, longing and aspiration will be awakened.   On having intense longing,  that ‘tattva’ will be realized,  because that ‘tattva’ (Truth,  God) is omnipresent,  while the world is not.

Listener ‒  How to have such thoughts ?

Swamiji ‒  Honor those points that have been told to you just now.   You become pleased on receiving food that you like,  if someone serves you various delicious dishes,  then you become pleased,   if someone respects and honors you,  you are pleased,  then you are not entitled to this ‘tattva’ (Truth) !  He who becomes pleased in favorable situations, has no humanness in him whatsoever !  If you desire God Realization,  then do not get embroiled in all this.   Do not see pleasure in it.    Someone is agreeable to you, then you are very pleased,  and someone says something bitter,  but is beneficial for you, then you feel bad.   He who considers the beneficial talks as also bad,  how will he be able to realize that ‘tattva’ (Truth) ?   He who says something to you that is agreeable and sugarcoated,  such a person appears pleasing to you, then you are not entitled to this ‘tattva’ (Truth).   You will be unable to last or continue genuine ‘satsang’.  Without continuing, that ‘tattva’  will not be realized.   Place your hand on your heart and think over !

That ‘tattva’ is in everyone, at all times.   That ‘tattva’ remains as-it-is in all places, time, things, people, circumstances, incidents, states.   Therefore,  become disinclined from all these perishing things,  in other words,  do not take pleasure from them,  do not get entangled in them,  do not get embroiled in them.  You will realize the tattva here itself.  But if you take pleasure from these, you will experience nothing but suffering.

Ease in God Realization
hanumanji-01-400.jpg

All the various activities you feel ‘you have to do,  you have to complete this task’  if all of this work was accomplished,  you would be so pleased !  In the same way,   all the mutable things, persons, objects, incidents, situations-circumstances,  if they all became non-existent,  then it would be so blissful -  there is no end to such joy !

You are worried about your daughter’s marriage,  that the girl has grown up,   what is to be done ?   When she gets a good home,   a good husband,  and you are able to get them married as per your means,  and get her settled in her new home,  then you will be so joyful.   All your worries leave you, knowing that your girls has found a good home and family,   and she will be happy there.   In this way,  all the worrisome activities,  and worldly things,  situations-circumstances, incidents, etc.  if it were all to return to their own home, if it were to merge into Nature (Prakriti),  and you were detached from it,  then it will be so joyful !

You must rise above this changing world,  and not get trapped in it,  then you will experience the joy of liberation.   On becoming disinclined towards the world,  and inclined towards God,  you will experience eternal joy.   In this manner,   it is very easy for man to become entirely free of sorrows and attain eternal bliss.   If you do not believe that it is easy,  then surely at least it is possible.   But is it possible for animals, birds, trees etc.  Is it possible for ghosts, spirits, demons etc. ?  Is it possible for cow,  buffalo, goat, sheep, etc. ?    In fact it is only possible for human beings -  not only that,  rather it is very easy.   If you do not believe then I have no solution for that.   If by some imagination you believe that he just says such things !  I have had no intoxicants .    I have not come under the influence of some alcohol and said such things.  Then too,  you do not have faith then I have no solution for this.

God Realization is very easy,  very simple.   There is nothing in this world that is as easy as God Realization,  nothing has been,  nothing will be,  nothing can ever be.   God by showering His grace has bestowed this human body,  for his attainment.  Therefore if His realization is not with ease,  then what will be easy ?     What other purpose does man have besides realizing God ?  If man wants to suffer pain, then he should go to hell,  if he wants to enjoy pleasures, he should go to heaven and if he wants to rise above the two,  and attain the real truth (tattva,  God) then come in human body.   Such an exceptional state is possible only in this human body,  and very quickly.    In this the only work that you have to do is to awaken the ardent thirst, longing and quest within that I want to take this only.   The thirst should be so strong,  that neither wealth nor sense enjoyments will pull you towards them.  Pleasures and comfort,  honor and respect - these will not attract you.   Just as in childhood the toys appeared very pleasing,  blowing the horn was so much fun,  but now you have risen above these things.   Now they are no longer pleasing.   Do clay horses and blowing horns appear to be fun ?  Do you ever think about taking those toys in your hands and making loud sounds ?   Just as you have risen above these,  in the same way,  rise above the objects,  sense enjoyments,   money,  pleasure,  comforts,  honor,  praise,  name and fame,  acclamation,  then that ‘tattva’  (truth) will be realized on its own.    Neither obeisance will remain, nor acclamation,  nor objects,   nor money,  nor family,  nor body,  nor this situation and circumstance.   These will not remain.   While these are here,  rise above them,  then realization of the ‘tattva’ (Truth, God)  will take place immediately; because it is ever attained.   Only due to remaining bogged down over here, the ‘tattva’  is not being realized.

There is one very significant point.   Please pay attention towards it.  All actions and objects,  are the kind to come into being and later perish.    If said in different words, they are all the kind that are constantly changing.   Actions have a beginning and an end.  Objects (things) are created and later destroyed.  Incidents take place and they end.   Situations and circumstances come,  but do not remain the same.  States do not remain the same.  Persons do not remain the same.   They are all constantly changing.   All of this put together, is called life.    This is the worldly life in it.   One who desires pleasure from these,  is making a grave mistake.  It is not an ordinary mistake.   Himself being an ‘ansh’ (ray of consciousness) of Paramatma (God),  devoid of an modifications and changes, what will it gain from this ever-changing world ?   There is nothing to gain.   It will be betrayal only; he will have to cry;   he will have to regret !    This can be understood properly only by man.  If seen from one perspective,  then even the ‘devatas’  (demi-gods) have no such entitlements.   They too are trapped in sense pleasures.   Just as in this world there are many extremely wealthy men,  that are unable to have ‘satsang’ (association with Truth,  holy company),  they are not able to abide in good qualities and conduct,  then the ‘devatas’  who are far more indulgent in pleasures,  what will they be able to do ?   Men surely have the capabilities,   but they are unable to get away from the abundance of pleasures.   Due to the longing for pleasures and hoarding,  they are very speedily moving towards their own decline and destruction.    They cannot be saved from hell !  They will become ghosts, evil spirits, demons, devils etc.   They will not be able to save themselves from grave troubles and pain.

Your very ‘self’ is veritably an ‘ansh’ (ray of consciousness) of Paramatma (God),  which in its immutable form remains ever as-is.    There never was any changes in it,  there isn’t any changes in it,  there will never be any changes in it,  and it is not ever possible for any changes in it.   You being the ‘ansh’,  you too are as-it-is.   Many eras have gone by,   but you are the very same one  ‒

‘भूतग्रामः स एवायं भूत्वा भूत्वा प्रलीयते’ (गीता ८ । १९) ।
Bhootagraamah sa evaayam bhootvaa bhootvaa praleeyate |
(Gita 8/19)
‘All the beings dissolve in THAT as being manifest from the same.’

But how can he whose attention is on the ever-changing objects,  understand the unchanging,  immutable ‘tattva’ (God) ?   Due to placing value on the changing,  he remains entangled in that alone;  therefore,  he cannot draw his attention towards  the immutable ‘tattva’ (Truth,  God).
