The Eminence of Bhakti (Love and Devotion)
भक्तिकी श्रेष्ठता

continued.....
From the perspective of knowledge,  God says ‒‘न त्तन्नासदुच्यते’ (गीता १३ ।१३) ‘That Supreme Eternal called neither being nor non-being’.  From the perspective of Devotion,  God says ‒‘सदसच्चाहमर्जुन’ (गीता ९।१९)   Sadasacchahum Arjuna” (Gita 9/19) ‘O’ Arjuna!   I am both Being and Non-being.’ therefore a devotee sees God everywhere ‒
सो अनन्य जाके असि मति न टरइ हनुमंत ।
मैं सेवक सचराचर   रूप   स्वामि भगवंत ॥                                                                              (मानस,किष्किन्धा॰३)
Everything is only God - as such sentiments continue,  the sense of I-ness is wiped out, and only the one God remains.
तू तू करता तू भया,    मुझमें रही न हूँ ।
वारी फेरी बलि गई, जित देखूँ तित तू ॥

"Tut u kartaa tu bhayaa, mujh mein rahi na hoon |
Vaari pheri bali gayi, jit dekhu tit tu ||

I-You-This-That nothing remains,  only God remains.  In knowledge too,  I-You-This-That nothing remains,  only the One Existence-Consciousness-Bliss Absolute Brahma remains.   But the bliss of knowledge is peaceful,  uninterrupted,  unchanging.   The bliss of Devotion is ever increasing . It is the nature of love to increase.  Just as in the boiling milk bounces,  in the same way, in the bliss of devotion (bhakti),  the bouncing and rallying continues on.   Seeing Lord Ram,  the enlightened King Janak says ‒
इन्हहि बिलोकत अति अनुरागा ।
बरबस  ब्रह्मसुखहि  मन  त्यागा ॥
                                                               (मानस, बाल॰२१६।३)
There is uninterrupted bliss in ‘Brahmamukh’ and in ‘ati anuraag’ that is everlasting relish. It means that even on attaining enlightenment, liberation one does not entirely become free of personal hunger,  rather there remains a hunger of everlasting relish.
Even a Karmayogi attains liberation.  He who does not believe in God, can also attain liberation.  In Jain religion,  there is belief in liberation,  a place where the liberated souls go.   Therefore, even when one does not believe in God,  he can attain liberation or knowledge, but to love is impossible.  Love is exceptional.  Even God comes  under the sway of love.  ‒‘अहं भक्तपराधीन:’ ‘ahambhaktparaadheen’,  God does not come under the sway of the person who has attained knowledge (jnani).      God has given everyone the power of discrimination (vivek jnana), whereby they can become liberated, and rise about the inert,  and become My beloved.  God is an embodiment of knowledge and is eternally perfect.  therefore God does not hunger (quest) for knowledge.  But he most certainly pines for love (prem pipaasu).  Therefore God says ‒
मय्यर्पितमनोयुद्धिर्यो मद्धक्त: स मे प्रिय: । (गीता १२।१४
“Mayyarpitamanobuddhiryo madbhaktah sa me priyah”  (Gita 12/14).
“He who gives his mind-intellect to Me, that devotee of Mine,  is most dear to Me”.   (continued)

On attaining knowledge there is no need of knowledge,  but on acquiring love,  there continues to be a need for love.   The reason being,  that one can get satiated with knowledge, ‒‘Aatmatruptasch maanavah’ (Gita 3/17)  ‘आत्मतृप्तश्च मानव:’ (गीता ३।१७), but in Love there is never any satiation.  It has come in Ramayan‒
राम चरित  जे  सुनत अघाहीं ।
रस बिसेष जाना तिन्ह नाहीं ॥
                                   (मानस, उत्तर० ५३।१)
Those who are satiated by listening to the divine plays of the Lord,  they experience relish while listening, but they have not experienced and known exceptional relish.  What happens on knowing exceptional relish?
जिन्ह के श्रवन    समुद्र समाना ।

तिन्ह के हिय तुम्ह कहुँ गृह रूरे ॥
                                                               (मानस, अयोध्या १२८।२-३)
Arjuna says to the Lord that on listening to Your nectar-filled words, I am not getting satiated ‒‘भूय: कथय तृप्तिर्हि श्रृण्वतो नास्ति मेऽमृतम्’(गीता १०।१०) । Maharaj Pruthu asks God for a boon, that bless me with 10,000 ears, so that  he can go on listening to the Lord’s divine plays.  ‒ ‘विधत्स्व कर्णायुतमेष मे वर:’ (श्रीमद्भा ४।२०।२४) Even on listening,  one is not satiated -  this is ‘Nitya viyog’ (eternal separation) and there is relish in listening ‒ this is ‘Nityayog’ (eternal union).    There is such relish in Love,  in which something exceptional and extra-ordinary keeps on happening.  For how long does this go on ‒ to this there is no end !  In knowledge,  one is aware of the “self”,  but in love there is constant pull towards God,  God appears sweet and loving.   At all times one continues to listen to the Lord’s stories,  continues to talk about the Lord,  there is remembrance of the Lord,  singing the verses of Lord’s devotional poetry,  this is the exceptional relish of Love.    Just as a greedy man is longing for money,  like wise,  the lover is longing for love.  In knowledge,  besides Nature (Prakruti), there is nothing else* and in Devotion and Love,  besides God there is nothing else In the path of knowledge (Jnanamarg),  Nature (Prakruti) is to be renounced, but in the path of Devotion (Bhaktimarg),  there is no thing that is the kind to be renounced ! In Knowledge (vivek) -  there remains two things -  real and unreal,  insentient and sentient,  eternal and temporary,   essence and non essence,  etc.,  but in devotion (bhakti),  only the one God remains.   Therefore God has called those who realize that “Everything is only God” such a “Great Soul” as extremely rare.  ‒‘वासुदेव: सर्वमिति स महात्मा सुदुर्लभ:’ (गीता ७।११), whereas man of knowledge has not been called a rarity.   (continued)

The Eminence of Bhakti (Love and Devotion)
भक्तिकी श्रेष्ठता

continued.....

Knowledge (jnana) and Devotion (bhakti) - both are equally capable in removing worldly sorrows;  however, of the two,  there is greater glories of “bhakti” (love and devotion) than of knowledge.  In knowledge there is “akhand ras” (uninterrupted relish),  but in “bhakti” there is “anant ras” (infinite relish).  In “anant ras” ,  there is a special kind of joy like the bouncing waves.  Just as when we gain knowledge of anything in this world, that this is money,  this is a watch, then this knowledge, wipes out the ignorance.   When ignorance is removed,  then sorrow,  fear, and bondage in the form of birth-death come to an end.  This sorrow, fear, etc.  it all arises out of ignorance.  Just as in the pitch darkness of the night, even though a man is familiar with the place, he walks slowly and cautiously,  so that he may not stumble upon something.   But when the sunlight appears, he is no longer fearful of stumbling, and he is even able to run and cross that area.   In the darkness of ignorance,  there is sorrow, fear, remorse etc.  and the moment one gains knowledge, they all go away.  However,      Love is even more extra-ordinary then knowledge. Just as when one comes to know that “this is a watch” ‒ then ignorance about the watch is removed.   However,  when there is a longing to acquire a watch,   then on getting the watch there is an exceptional relish that is experienced.   ‘This is money’‒ on having this knowledge,  and developing greed for money,  that “let me acquire some more,  some more” then in that one derives exceptional relish.   Similarly,  in love and devotion there an exceptional relish (ras), that let me chant more of the Lord’s Name,  let there be more singing of His glories,  let there be more talks about the Lord.   Just as there is greed for money ‒ ‘Jimi pratilaabh lobh adhikaayi’, like that, there is love and devotion of God ‒‘dine dine navam navam namaami nandasambhavam’. Greed (attraction in this world) and Love (attraction of God)  ‒ there is a big difference between the two. In greed the sorrow increases and in Love the joy increases.  Desires and infatuation increases in greed,  and in Love,  renunciation increases. The attraction in the world is due to flaws,  but attraction towards God is due to flawlessness.
Knowledge is not something meaningless and ordinary ‒‘Na hi gyaanena sadrusham pavitramiha vidyate”  (Gita 4/38).  ‘There is no spiritual discipline as pure as knowledge on this earth”   Knowledge destroys ignorance,  it gives peace. it gives liberation.   But in knowledge, peace, and “uninterrupted relish” “akhandras” remains,  whereas in love and devotion (bhakti) there is ever increasing love,  anantras.    That relish, never comes to an end,  it constantly increases.   Because even on being in love,  there is an immense feeling of scarcity,  which is called “eternal separation”.  In this “eternal separation” the love becomes ever increasing.   Just as when one experiences joy in “kirtan” then the sentiments are one of “let me get more relish, and more and more”.  the previous relish felt less, therefore the the feeling is one of “more relish”.  Thus there is feeling of separation with the first type of relish and there is union in the relish further ahead.   In love, this union and separation is constantly going one.  therefore it is called eternal union and eternal separation.

Uninterrupted Spiritual Practice
(Akhand Saadhan)

continued......

To play according to the assigned role,  there is an actor’s script.  Through this script (play-write) one can learn that these lines are to be said by one person and these other lines are to be said by the other actors and players.   In the same way,  in our books it is written that a householder has to do the following;  men should do these duties,  women should perform these other duties,  son should do the following etc.    And this is all role playing, only for the happiness of all the family members.   All say that “householder life is very useful.  Waah!  Waah!  Waah!  Great!”  In this way one has to do things properly, but not with the sentiments of getting praise,  “Waah Waah”.  Only for removing our attachment and infatuation.  We have to play according to our role, to abide in the  instructions of the Lord,  but we are not to regard these roles as real.  The name for this is karmayog.
If it is done in this manner, then automatically the attachment will go away and on its own the desire and passion (raag) will go away.    Therefore it is said ‒‘Dharma te birati’  By practicing Dharma (duty, righteousness),   detachment most certainly takes place.  If sense objects are enjoyed with passion, leaving aside duty, then one can never achieve detachment.   It is impossible.  Therefore let the aim be one of detachment,  and be regulated in this detachment.   Do the work as best as you possibly can as per the role,  but you have to believe that it is only an act (a role).   If there is something lacking in your performance of the role, then it is problematic, and regarding the role as real is also problematic.   Therefore,  let there be nothing lacking in fulfilling the role,  and do not regard it as real.   What will happen with this?   Just as by dressing in the actor’s costume the money that is earned, that  money too will go with you, and money earned without the actor’s costume will also go with you.  Both cases, the money will come to you.   In the same way,  sitting in solitude if you do meditation and prayer and worship of the Lord,  then this is not in the actor’s role,  now you are worshipping your very own Lord, and acting in the householder role doing household chores,  then this is playing the assigned role in this worldly life.  But the purpose of both is “Bhajan”  (worship, devotion and remembrance of God).   By doing so,  one will get admitted to the Lord’s abode and the “bhajan”  will become constant and uninterrupted.    If “bhajan”,  meditation,   repeated chanting of the Lord’s name- association with holy company takes place over there as the lord’s “bhajan” and relating with the world-trading is our work to be done over here,  then this will not be uninterrupted spiritual practice.    Let all work be God’s work.
Tadarth karma kaunteya ..............॥ (Gita 3 / 1 )
Madarthamapi karmaani kurvan siddhimavaapasyasi ॥
                                                       (Gita 12 / 10)
We are doing work for God,  it is the Lord’s work only that we are doing, then “bhajan”  will take place from all directions, and the moment the work comes to an end,  the mind will get engaged in God.   Just as one trades for money,  then the moment the shop closes,  immediately the thoughts go towards the money,  one thinks about the money,  about counting it etc.  The shop closes, the market is closed,  then too the lights are kept on.  What are they doing ?   Counting the notes and arranging them.  Now why are they counting the notes?   Then they say -  what was the purpose of trading?   The purpose for which this business is carrying one,  is where the natural tendencies are engaged.   In the same way,  for what purpose is the work of a householder done?   For God Realization.   Then wherever the work comes to an end,  the mind will become engaged in God.   Immediately this will happen.    The moment you begin your business and trade,  then the attention will be on how to earn money, whether the money is remembered or not,  but the work is for money.   Therefore there is uninterrupted recollection of money,  the aim of money will remain constant.   In the same way,  if Bhajan and meditation is for the Lord only,  and if all the work in the householder life is for the Lord,  then in all work there will be constant, uninterrupted spiritual practice.  He who grabs hold of this uninterrupted and constant,  is a “sadhak”  (spiritual aspirant).   To maintain constancy is “saadhan” (spiritual practice),  and through that the unlimited that is attained is ”saadhya” (the goal,  God).  Then on its own  all this will take place.
In this manner how  to understand ‘We are God’s’ and ‘how to do uninterrupted spiritual practice, uninterrupted worship and devotion of God (Akhand Bhajan) ‒ the answers to both these questions has been addressed !
