The way to be free from sensual desires, anger, greed etc., is
acceptance with a firm conviction that "these are not in me (self)". Even if these are perceived in me, then too I must not accept them in
my self; because in fact, these are not in me at all, but only due to error – I
have assumed them in me. I remain and these do not remain, this is our
experience.
You are there at present, but are sensual desires there right now? Is anger
present right now? At present is there any greed? If these were in you, then
just as a colored cloth remains, then the cloth also remains and the color also
remains, in the same way, these would also remain with you forever. But
these flaws do not remain forever – this is your experience. From this it is
proven that these flaws are fleeting, i.e. they are the kind that come and go and they
are impermanent.
"aagamaapaayinonityaah" (Gita 2/14).
You are an embodiment of the Real, Existence (Sat), therefore when
you assume the presence of desires, anger, etc., then even though being unreal
(asat), they appear to be real. Just
as when you put anything in fire, then that thing begins to glow. Whether it
be a shaving of wood, a stone, a stick, a coal, that even when it is put in
the fire, it begins to glow. In the same way, those thing that you accept in
your self, they begin to be perceived in you (the embodiment of self).
The
body is temporal (asat, unreal). It is constantly changing. It is changing so
quickly that that it cannot be seen in the same form twice ever; because in the
first instance the way the body was, it does not remain the same in the second
instance. It is only due to your sentiments and feelings that this appears at
real (IS, existent). If
it were real (Is) then how could it have changed?
Questioner - If
it is non-existent, then how is it seen?
Swamiji -
You have the feeling of it existing, therefore it is seen. There is one
exceptional point that this body in fact is seen by the body alone. The self
does not see the body at all. You tell me whether in deep sleep, can you see
the body? You see the body with the senses, mind, intellect etc, therefore it
is seen, or else, it does not have the power to seen on its own. The eye is
made of the same minerals, composites as the body. It is the same with the
mind, intellect and ego. If you become void of egoism and see, then will the
body be seen? In deep sleep the egoism vanishes, therefore the body is not
seen.
Questioner - In
deep sleep (shushupti) one is enveloped with ignorance !
Swamiji -
When even in ignorance there is that much capability that the body is not seen,
then in knowledge, is there not as much ability as in ignorance? When an
aspirant becomes free of sense of I-ness and mine-ness, his ignorance is washed
away, then the reality (continuation, existence) of the body is not seen;
because the body does not have the ability to see. (to be continued)
